About
Windrose is a survival adventure set in an alternative Age of Piracy. It features the classic “build, craft, survive” formula along with intense combat and engaging exploration on land and sea.
Progress through vast procedurally generated biomes filled with hidden mysteries, hand-crafted dungeons and quests. Gather your crew and captain your ship through brutal naval combat with boarding actions and seamless transitions between ship and shore.
Defeat challenging bosses on your swashbuckling adventure driven by real-world characters and supernatural forces alike.
Every legend begins with a reckless crossing.
You are a captain who dares to challenge Blackbeard. What begins as a grounded story of survival and revenge draws you into a growing conflict between empires, pirate clans, and mysterious dark powers looming on the horizon. Windrose is steeped in the allure of the Age of Piracy.
Answer the call of the seas and move seamlessly between ship and shore. Naval combat is shaped by your decisions, whether you’re trading cannon fire at range or closing in for fierce boarding actions. Equip and customize your ship to suit your playstyle, from nimble ketch to versatile brig and monstrous frigate. And when the cannons go silent, claim your spoils and share a sea shanty with your crew as you sail onward.
Establish a foothold in vibrant, diverse biomes, gather resources, and build to your own taste, from simple shelters to elaborate mansions and fully developed forts. Recruit NPCs and grow your settlement to speed up harvesting and production.
This world belongs to the brave and the curious, so venture into the uncharted lands. Over 100 hand-crafted dungeons and points of interest contain endless secrets and treasures, though such rewards rarely come without risk. Trade with different factions to gain the edge you’ll need.
Hack, slash, batter, and shoot your way forward! Master a wide arsenal of melee weapons and firearms. Parry and dodge enemy attacks, chain different strikes, and keep an eye out for new gear, including sabers, rapiers, halberds, greatswords, pistols, muskets, and more.
Shape your combat style through talents and flexible loadouts with unique armor sets. Use food and potions to gain powerful buffs. Test your skills against a wide range of enemies and challenging bosses, defeat them, and claim their treasures.
Windrose is fully playable solo offline or in co-op with friends, supporting up to 8 players, with both self-hosted and dedicated servers available. Procedural generation will make each journey stand out. Please note: due to performance, especially in the late game, we recommend to play in the party up to 4 players for the optimal experience.

I'm a huge fan of survival crafting games. This looked decent in the gameplay videos I watched but the reality of the game was less than exciting. I appreciated the world creation and setting. The lore and story progression were entertaining. Texturing, rendering, lighting effects, and draw distance were really good. At the end of the day it just felt like it was a huge, pretty looking world that ultimately felt a bit empty. Combat was a bit boring and a little bit unbalanced. I think you could tweak some of the mechanics to make level progression more meaningful (ex. better rates/prices with factions at higher levels. why is the guinea/piastre rate straight garbage the whole time? This is a pirate game. Better, more in depth ship customization should be a focal point. I want to be able to make my ship faster instead of just stronger. I want a crew that is customizable that makes me and my ship a bloody terror.) At the end of the day this game isn't terrible. There are just other games that do survival crafting much, much better. ENSHROUDED is my gold standard.

Context for review: Played on a hard server in a duo. Have not done every quest per region, but have done most that are reasonable so far. First, I wish I could have a mixed rating. I lean more positive than negative, but the game does have its flaws. The primary flaw of this game is the boss scaling. I have not played on the easier difficulties, but the hard bosses are rough. I understand the boss is going to be difficult, especially on hard mode, but it's less about their flow and more about the ridiculous stats. Posture is tedious to break on the bosses, even when using a two-handed sword. The first boss, Thomas Richards, is not that difficult, just tedious due to the HP pool and the Posture. The second boss has stumped my brother and I, however. Hands has been beating the crap out of us due to the speed of attacks, the massive AOE, and the enormous posture count. The boss fights get very boring when you can only swing once or twice before needing to dodge/parry a chain of 3-5 attacks. Parrying is not difficult, but it just feels that every fight devolves into simply swinging your weapon once or twice and then being on the back foot until you break the enemy's posture to then attack a couple more times. Another thing that is frustrating is the inventory of the Brig compared to the Ketch. For the life of me, I do not understand why the Brig has less inventory than the ketch when it is the next step in progression. I think it is pretty silly for the inventory to be smaller than the ketch. I understand the guns are doubled, but I still find it disappointing that my ship isn't able to ship as many items as my old ship. Though I have been quite negative, I still think the game is enjoyable and the feeling of getting your first boat and hearing the shanties is amazing. I just wish the game was less tedious when fighting bosses. Stats also do not seem to do much compared to other games with leveling systems. I understand that foods are meant to supplement your stats, but I can barely tell a difference between having 30 in an attack stat and having 0. A lot of these issues may just be from a poorly balanced hard mode, but the game seems to get more tedious as I advance. It feels like I get weaker when progressing rather than getting stronger.
I typically don't write a review until I'm completely done with a game, but this game is only 75% complete until the next update comes out so I will be taking a break. The 75% I got to play though was a delight and I highly recommend it. For a game in Early Access, there are remarkably few bugs and the game is very well polished. My experience was mostly playing co-op with a friend, which I highly recommend. Individual aspects: - Story = Minimal. Maybe the last part they're working on or just not a priority, but there's an odd cutscene sequence at the beginning, walls of text for quests, but very little narrative-driven gameplay. It actually doesn't bother me since the freedom of doing whatever I wanted whenever I wanted was the best part. - Gameplay = Fun! Land combat is hard at first and may become a bit repetitive, but boss battles were always a huge challenge. Naval combat is somewhat easier and satisfying. It was a pleasure sailing the seas with the shanties and exploring each island to find new things. If current state (pre-Ashlands) was "end-game", then I might complain about the lack of end-game content and diversity, but what they've previewed seems like it will make a good game even better. - Crafting = Addictive. It was very impressive to me that you could build whatever you wanted wherever you wanted (for the most part). I felt inspired to create a lot of things and really enjoyed that sense of accomplishment when they were done. I will say the building components still have room for improvement, as sets are incomplete, scattered across purchases and discoveries, and some aspects like snapping and rotating more could be better. Graphics and performance: Surprisingly good. There were some beautiful shots sailing the seas, and even with some settings on high my GPU and CPU weren't straining. I expected things to slow down the more we built and explored, but there was usually no noticeable difference. Overall, really glad I played, worth the purchase in current state, and looking forward to returning when the next big update drops.
This is a fantastic game, plenty of challenges both on land and on the ships, keyboard and mouse interface are simple and useful, key binding is great, crafting is intuitive and oh so easy to do.
FULL SAIL! MORE SPEEEEDDDD!!!!!!!!!!!!
This game has the potential to become the best pirate game. Even in Early Access, it already has a lot of good qualities. The combat and exploration alone are already well furnished. I’m excited to see what the devs are cooking for the future. GG!~~
