[h1]DISAPPOINTMENT[/h1] Who Is The Red Queen? is a short (~1,5h) yuri Visual Novel inspired by "Alice in Wonderland". While it’s not the first time the tale has been given a darker twist, this version adds a layer of lesbian romance on top. But does that make it better? Not really. While the concept of blending a beloved classic with horror and romance elements might sound intriguing, it’s still crucial to present it in a compelling way - and this adaptation doesn’t quite hit the mark. For me, Who Is The Red Queen? was simply boring, plagued by rushed pacing, lackluster characters, and a predictable mystery. With a runtime of under two hours, the concept just doesn’t have enough time to fully develop (unlike Alice: Madness Returns, which proves this idea can work). [b]I can't recommend it.[/b] [b]Story[/b] The story of Who Is The Red Queen? is fairly simple. Alice, the protagonist, falls down the rabbit hole into Wonderland and soon learns that to return to her world, she must find the Red Queen. Unfortunately, [spoiler]the queen has been murdered, and Alice is tasked with finding her body parts[/spoiler]. While the concept may sound intriguing, it doesn’t quite deliver in practice. The mystery is poorly conveyed, and it’s easy to predict how everything will unfold. The writing itself isn’t necessarily bad, but the pacing is far too rushed, leaving no room to build any real emotional investment. You’re simply along for the ride. The game offers various choices that lead to one of three major endings, along with some minor dead ends. [b]Visuals[/b] The visuals are serviceable - simple and minimalistic, though not outright unattractive. The character designs suffer from the same flaw. They're basic to the point of being visually unremarkable, making them rather dull to look at. You would expect something more from "Alice in Wonderland". [b]Audio[/b] There’s no voice acting, and aside from the music, sound design is minimal. That said, the music is surprisingly solid and fits well with the scenes. [b]Technicalities[/b] I didn’t encounter any issues. A special shout-out for various accessibility options.

Take the Alice in Wonderland story, turn all the characters into girls, add some yuri and a bit of gore, and voilà, you have a entertaining visual novel.

really good, emotional storytelling. i find a lot of the time VNs with a lot of convoluted choices just bog me down, which makes me prefer linear ones overall, but the pathing in this one actually creates complementary branches that elucidate each other's themes really well. the story manages to make its over-the-top fairy-tale characters actually sympathetic over the course of the plot, fitting together memorable narratives about trauma, guilt and revenge. potentially the best VN i've paid $0 for, and easily better than a lot of those that cost more, so if you're into yuri that's "dark" without sacrificing poignancy, here it is!

"Who Is The Red Queen?" is not a game, it's an e-book that's been dumped on Steam masquerading as a game. As a visual/interactive novel, this doesn't feature any notable gameplay, it's just a lot of clicking through badly written dialogue that would never have been accepted or published in print, which poses the question, "How did something this badly written end up on Steam?". When someone hoping to become an author is unable to get published in print, they spend $100 and dump their high school fan-fiction onto Steam, under the guise of a game. This garbage e-book aggressively abuses the corpse and memory of Lewis Carroll, who, had he known this garbage, cringey fan-fiction would be written to despoil his work, would never have written Alice's Adventures in Wonderland at all. What we have here is square in the middle what we should expect, a high school anime club dropout fan-fiction completely packed with writing as bad as it is cringe inducing. In this e-book, all of the characters from Lewis Carrolls stories are turned into little anime girls who are all the authors imaginary girlfiends, even the cat. This is so cringey you are guaranteed to throw up in your mouth. I feel bad for Lewis Carroll. Visual novels/e-books are tedious at best... imagine the best novel you ever read, be that Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy or 2001: A Space Odyssey or Twilight (if you have terrible taste in literature), but then translate that to a format where the words dribble out and you have to click your mouse every time you wanted to read the next sentence, instead of just turning the pages. You'd think it was garbage. Now imagine that experience, but with much worse writing (because if these guys could write professionally, they'd be published authors and this would be on shelves in bookstores, and they wouldn't have to pay Valve $100 to self-publish this on Steam), and you have your average Steam e-book. One of the chief problems with failed authors polluting Steam with non-game E-books is that E-books can easily just be presented in a web browser... there's no justification for charging money on Steam for what might as well be a webpage. We don't spend thousands on buying a gaming rig to spend money on Steam for something Chrome or Firefox could do. Despite having no up-front cost, this failed to appeal to the 120 million+ gamers on Steam. SteamDB showed the e-book peaked at only 15 concurrent readers... this is a dismal public reception. This was so bad they couldn't even give it away. The funny thing is, if you wanted to print this book, you'd only need to print 15 copies to satisfy the entire world's demand for it. While this E-book is "free", you can get better quality, professionally written books and comics for free online (from places like Project Gutenberg) or from public libraries. Steam isn't a comic book store, neither is it Netflix, it's for games. Your gaming rig is not a Kindle. It's impossible for me to recommend things to PC gamers that aren't really games.

A short but fun visual novel. The music is fantastic and the story is engaging though not as scary as expected. The Hatter's ends made me tear up a bit. Loved the art and the character designs!! And the guide was extremely helpful in getting the read script to 100% Enjoyed this a lot!!

10/10 would kiss hatter again
