White Cat Town Mystery is a cozy, mystery VN with interactive point & click exploration with plenty of player choices to be made. Having released in Early Access (EA), content is quite limited with only the prologue and first game day currently available, only taking me around 50 minutes to complete. Despite the minimal content so far, the writing is decent, and I loved exploring the town with some light puzzles. I am looking forward to seeing what else “Cozy Creative Games” add and to follow where this mystery goes. Pros

Cozy & family-friendly mystery story
Interactive point & click exploration
Light inventory-based puzzles
Descriptive and intriguing story
Player choice – Choose how your relationships with specific characters unfold and more
Cons

Minor bugs - Some scenes seem to skip the text
Upon finishing the EA version, the game boots you to the menu before being able to save
Very short EA access (unsure how long the total game is aiming to be)

If you would like to see more reviews written by me, please follow my curator page and help support my work Cookie Reviews.

Story
Despite the unusual and somewhat insipid title, White Cat Town Mystery captivated me from the very start. Its alluring and mysterious descriptions of the town and each of the protagonist’s friends had me wanting to understand more about where the story is headed. The title makes the game seem so boring and drab, almost like a bit of an asset flip, but it is nothing like that. Instead of focusing on the very surface-level evidence of the protagonist being a white cat in a town, I do think a more relevant title perhaps about Lumi or the mist would have been more apt and appealing. You play as Lumi, a white cat in an anthropomorphic universe who heads back to his town to have a reunion with some of his old classmates. You get to choose his perception about each of his friends, did they once share a romantic fling, were they good friends, were there unrequited feelings or was he always annoyed by them? There are many options to choose from and they seem to make interactions vastly different, which I appreciated. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3271429438 After the outing with Lumi’s old friends, the focus turns on one of the missing friends and after catching up with her, her demeanour is different and she seems…off, despite once being lively and the centre of attention. Characters mention a suspicious green mist and feeling unusual. This sets Lumi up for the remainder of the story, focusing on some supernatural elements and differing choices. The text was well-written with minimal errors, mainly only consisting of a few typos. There were no extremely noticeable English grammatical mistakes or odd phrasing which is a huge plus. Although there is not much content to play through just yet, I am looking forward to further interactive scenes and more choices between characters as I am definitely intrigued.
Gameplay
Being a VN, there is lots of descriptive text to read and it is easily controlled by either mouse or keyboard options. Previously seen text can also be fast-forwarded easily and the game has all the common and necessary features that VNs need. Some areas of the game let Lumi free roam around the town and go to specific areas of interest on the map. These areas may have some hotspots to further explore and the store page mentions that side quests will be added in upcoming updates which is exciting. The beginning of the game also lets you decide the relationship dynamic between characters that sets the tone for the entire game, encouraging lots of playthroughs to see the different relationships and lead to different endings. My favourite element about my, albeit short, experience, with the game was this player interactivity. It didn’t feel like just reading some text, instead I was involved in some decisions and felt I was able to shape the happenings around me. I hope to see this continue and expand upon in future updates.
Visuals & Sound
The charming, vibrant art goes hand in hand with the slow and eloquent pace of the narrative. Each area of the map you can travel to is vibrant, oozing with charisma and some small scenes are slightly animated. The town is also inspired by a real-world town in Portugal which is a nice touch! https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3271429508 There is no voice acting, and an “original 12-track soundtrack” plays on loop in the background. It is nothing special, and at times I felt it was a tad too repetitive, but it is mostly just ambient background noise that you forget about. However, in the current playable content, there is no dramatic scenes or reveals, so when the story heats up, I am interested to see if the soundtrack and audio effects can help facilitate these moments. Playtime: Currently at the time of writing this review, just prior to release, only around 50 minutes of content for the progloue and 1 game day (I am a fast reader but took my time to explore everywhere I could). Controller Recommended? No Replayability value: Yes, even in EA there are ample decisions to be made that slightly alter events. Particularly Lumu’s relationships with each of his friends.
Conclusion
White Cat Town Mystery is a curious little VN that starts off strong. Despite its only 50-minute playtime in its current EA version (priced fairly at $AU 5.95), I am looking forward to further content being added. I was saddened to reach the end of what was available, just as things were getting interesting! I hope further updates strive to maintain that same appeal.
With 1,400+ reviews, make sure to follow The Cpt Froggy Club Curator Page for plenty more!
A town is slowly being engulfed in darkness, a darkness that is blacker than black and that almost seems alive. A mysterious green mist beckons you closer and closer... all is not as it appears. Fear not, Lumi the ever-inquisitive white cat is here to investigate. White Cat Town Mystery just came out in Early Access on Steam. It is both developed and published by Cozy Creative Games. Did curiosity kill the cat? You’ll have to find out for yourself. White Cat Town Mystery is a visual novel. Looking at the future road map and what’s to come, it seems that when completed, the game will have many point & click aspects. The style is really interesting. Each screen has text unfolding on the side, with the art as the main feature - it’s a bit like reading a storybook. At the moment, there is a limited amount of content, but there are still some choices to make that will affect future outcomes. There are several story arcs planned with a branching narrative, and a cast of about ten anthropomorphic characters. There is a main quest and some side quests that will be added as the development continues. There are even puzzles in the making. It is still very early on in the development process so I couldn’t review the whole story, but I really enjoyed the content that is already accessible. It’s an interesting story, and I can’t wait to see how it unfolds so I can see the mystery through to the end. Nevertheless, all the locations on the map are presently available to visit. I don’t know if there are extra locations planned to be added to the map, but it already has a fair number of areas to explore. The town that you’ll be playing in is actually inspired by a real town situated in Portugal. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3299301472 The main character is an adorable white cat named Lumi. He is a detective. After leaving school, he moved into the big city where he learned that things are not always as they appear, and that sometimes the laws of logic mean nothing. There are also five other principal characters. Adrian, the sly black fox, is extremely smart, and has a very cartesian mind. He loves chess and all things scientific. Clara is a vivacious squirrel who is vibrant and loves to be surrounded by friends. She likes to laugh and is very caring. Felix is an affable hamster. He is great to be around and wants everyone to be happy. Ethan is a reserved brown dog. He doesn’t speak much, but there is an understated depth to him, and he is very sensitive. And then there is Isabella the beautiful rabbit, who could be a model. Everyone who meets her instantly loves her. She is the life of the party and very kind. You play as Lumi, and the game starts as you sit on a train looking at an old school album. You are going back to your hometown after living in the big city for a while, looking forward to being reunited with your old school gang. You always admired Isabella and are excited to see her again. You arrive at the old pub to meet with your friends, and although it’s a bit awkward at first, you quickly start to feel more comfortable. Still, there is one notable absence. Isabella never showed up. It’s not like her to miss a special event. After all, she was always the first to RSVP for an event. What’s happened to her? Your intuition tells you that something is wrong here, but what? Your friends appear uneasy about something. There is an odd darkness in this town that was never present before. With such an inquiring mind, you decide to check it out before turning in for the night. You come across a gloomy alley that you can’t remember ever seeing before. Will you go in and investigate or simply leave it alone? Your choice could change everything. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3300110103 The artstyle is beautiful, and I love the story behind it. The developers started with AI generated artwork, and proceeded to modify it with their own style. Some of the artwork is also made entirely by the developers. The drawings are vibrant, colorful and very detailed - they look as if they’re right out of a storybook. I also enjoyed the soundtrack. Not all visual novels have such an immersive soundtrack, and it adds another layer of quality to the game. The story is engaging but is currently just an outline of what’s to come. There is an intriguing mystery to solve, and I can’t wait to see what the creators come up with. I played through all the available content and visited every location, which took me a little over an hour, and I was taking my time. Although it’s extremely short, the creators promise much more, and what there is so far is great. White Cat Town Mystery was delightful to play. It has an interesting narrative and fun style. I haven’t played through the investigation part yet since it is not available - I can’t wait to see how it unfolds. I am intrigued by the mysterious darkness. White Cat Town Mystery shows great promise, and for the small asking price it’s an entertaining game. As a bonus you can support an up-and-coming developer.
Positives

Beautiful Artwork
Interesting mix between a visual novel and point & click
Cute, endearing characters

Negatives

Very short
The quest part is unavailable at the moment
Only buy it if you want to take part in the development process

Final Score: 8/10
White Cat Town Mystery is a promising visual novel with a stunning artstyle. If you love cats and mystery and want to support new developers, this is the game for you. I really liked the Early Access version of the game so far. It was a very intriguing game. I recommend that all of Lumi's friends should have something to give him on that first night, based on whoever he spends time with. Also, we don't really see Felix on the first day, and there should be an option to spend time with each friend on Horizon Hill.
Greetings! Luckly, I was able to receive a free key for the game to try it out. I'm not usually into visual novels, but I was inrigued by the rpg elements of the game. The process grabbed me from the first scenes. Firstly, the visual style is done to a high standard. Each character is drawn with love. Secondly, the game has an unique rpg system, so the main character will discover new amazing properties in himself. Thirdly, there is a non-linearity of the plot and character relationships. I highly recommend the game for both fans of the genre and anyone who wants to get acquainted with it.
I really enjoyed "White Cat Town Mystery" from "Cozy Creative Games". It will also appeal to those who love a wholesome atmosphere, cats, and mystery. I’m a fan of all these things, and I’m enchanted. Here’s what I especially liked: 1. A captivating and unpredictable plot. You don’t know what awaits you around the corner, and it’s engaging. There are no standard clichés. It’s fresh and interesting. 2. Beautiful and captivating art. The characters have vivid eyes. The main hero Lumi looks alive: he sees and watches. I rarely find that effect in games. It’s a strong plus for the atmosphere and expressiveness. 3. A cozy and wholesome world feels convincing. The narrative story provides a smooth rhythm that allows you to relax and forget about everyday hassle. I will replay this game with my son, to have fun together. What I didn’t like: 1. Unpredictability has a downside, where you don’t immediately understand what to do, and you have to rack your brain to figure out what something means and why it happened. But I hope in future updates and the continuation of the game, everything will become clearer. 2. Although it’s a visual novel and the plot is interesting, there’s a lot of reading. I guess it’s more reading than in other games. 3. Early access means the game is not fully shown, and now I have to wait for the continuation. And I can’t wait to play more! Overall, it’s a beautiful game. Thanks to the game developers and artists. Highly recommended!
