A Grinding Nightmare in a Promising Setting
As someone who just 100%'d this game back-to-back, I really wanted to like it. Even if it’s another Vampire Survivors clone, the Lovecraftian mini-premise and eerie art style initially draw you in. And at first, it works — the progression system is intriguing, with a constellation-based upgrade tree. New weapons unlock steadily, and later you gain access to invocation-style summons based on eldritch horrors. It hooks you — for a while. But once you hit mid-to-late game, the cracks begin to show.

Early Game – Die, Learn, Repeat
You’ll die. A lot. The learning curve isn’t unforgiving, but you quickly realize that only a handful of upgrades are truly viable: damage, reload speed, and movement speed. Elemental effects like chain lightning and cryo bullets offer some spice, but experimentation is rarely rewarded. Most builds funnel into the same two strategies: • Heavy damage, high movement, quick reload • Attack speed, reload, movement speed Dare to get creative? You’re likely punished for it. You’ll also start to notice the limited enemy variety — elites are basically just one color reskin (color red).

Mid Game – Where things fall apart
The pacing slows dramatically. Unlockable characters are mostly underwhelming. You’ll stick with the Captain 99% of the time — he’s the most balanced and effective. That is, until you unlock Ship Boy (around Madness Level 15), who completely breaks the game. By then, most passives are maxed out, and Ship Boy becomes an overpowered tank with massive XP gain. From that point forward, there’s no reason to use anyone else. By this stage, fatigue sets in. You’re replaying the same three barren maps, fighting the same three bosses. It becomes exhausting. There’s simply not enough variety to sustain interest.

Late Game – With an endless grind, interest dies
This is where it all unravels. There’s no real endgame. No endless mode. Madness caps at Level 20. Those final levels feel more like tedious chores than escalating challenges. Two of the bosses are so weak by this point that you can blast them into oblivion with ease. Worse yet, you’ll be grinding elemental bullet kills and god-type invocations just to finish the last few achievements. Any remaining excitement gets buried under mindless repetition.

Final Thoughts – Dead Game, dead hype
This game had potential. I was hooked early on — the art direction, the eerie themes, the loop... it all felt compelling. But after dozens of hours, I found myself bored, frustrated, and wondering why I kept pushing forward. There’s no satisfying payoff. And judging by the current discussions, it’s clear this is a dead or abandoned project. Even as a diehard fan of Lovecraftian horror and eldritch designs... I can’t recommend it, a total let down. 4/10
It's a little too repetitive too quickly.
Really good, just rough when you start out. Basically like Graveyard Gunslingers but way way better. Very addictive with a lot of sub systems baked in.
Excellent horde survivor. Games are short, gameplay is simple and concise with a slice of grind (tiny one) Pros - nice graphics and runs well - gameplay is fun - gamepad friendly - nice powers and the grind is worth Cons: - Need a bit to improve the U.I (in game objects and powers management) - More content (skins, stages, modes, rewards, weapons) - Characters kind looks the same, need more skins Its a good 1.0 version for a little game. Keep it up, nice work devs!!!
świeże podejście do gatunku horde survivali + Lovecraftowy twist. Bardzo mi się podoba! 8/10
Review: When the Light Dies When the Light Dies is a dark survival roguelite set in a frozen wasteland where light is your only protection. You play as a stranded explorer trying to stay alive after an expedition goes wrong. The main idea is simple: keep your lantern burning, gather resources, and fight off horrors that crawl out when the darkness grows stronger. The game mixes survival and action. You move through random maps, hunt for supplies, light bonfires, and battle monsters using different weapons and classes. Each run feels tense because hunger, cold, and sanity slowly drain your strength. When you die, you start again but keep some permanent upgrades that make future attempts a bit easier. The atmosphere is heavy and grim. The sound and visuals make the darkness feel alive and dangerous. It’s less about story and more about pure survival instinct — every minute you’re deciding whether to push forward or find shelter before the light goes out. What stands out is how the light itself becomes the main mechanic. It’s not just decoration; it’s life. Managing it adds real pressure and makes even small choices matter. The combat is rough but satisfying once you learn how to manage timing and resources. Overall, When the Light Dies is a tough but rewarding survival game. It’s best for players who like roguelikes with a brutal edge and don’t mind minimal story. It’s cold, grim, and punishing — but if you enjoy that kind of challenge, it delivers exactly what it promises.
This game is okay, but it has one weird quirk... I'm not sure why, maybe it's a me issue, but this game uses like 5-10% of my gpu for the first 10-20 mins of playing, then suddenly it jumps up to over 90% gpu usage, making my PC sound like an actual jet engine, and continue to climb and use as much gpu power as my PC will possibly allow, until I shut the game down. This game is okay, but with this weird quirk I can't be bothered to play it and neither will I recommend it..
Nothing to keep you engaged in this game for long..maybe it needs more content, although it isn't bad.
es cocaina de la buena, mandale!
