It was a very sweet and short game. Live for the cats.
A Beautiful Idea Padded Past Its Welcome
You'll read more in this short linear story than you'll play it, and that's kind of the point — but even at just under an hour to complete, the trip runs a little long for what it's trying to say.
Pros

Each passenger's story is thoughtfully written, with real emotional range between the regretful and the hopeful
A clean, achievement-friendly experience — all 11 unlock naturally over a single short sitting
Lands its central theme about recognizing your own quiet impact on others

Cons

Completely linear — there are no real choices, just moving from passenger to passenger
Manages to overstay its welcome despite a runtime under an hour
Little reason to revisit once you've heard everyone's story
💡 One Thing I'd Add:
The game doesn't need two different endings for the message it's trying to convey — the bad ending mostly feels like it exists to give players one more achievement to chase, not to add meaning.
This one's an easy add to your library if you're already chasing achievements or want a quick, reflective read between heavier games — just don't expect it to fully earn its short runtime. Very simple game. The story is nice and the artwork looks good
Very emotionally driven, hits close to home.
What Comes After is a literal walking sim. You only walk and talk to various NPC, it can’t be seen as a game. The themes it tackles and the way players interpret them are also very personal. I enjoyed the somewhat cheerful tone to depressing subjects but it might be a turn off to others expecting more layers. What I can say is how the anime art gives a warmth that’s a delight to experience. The English localisation is rather good, certainly compared to many other indie games. It’s important since the game is all about dialogues. As a person who usually can’t handle too much reading (pacing is king), I managed to finish the game in one sitting by reading for more than an hour and mostly being okay with it. The walking in between, enjoying the art and thinking a bit about what is being said helped to pace things. In terms of flaws, there are three minor. It’s unclear when the game saves as I haven’t noticed any save icon even though it does save. That’s why I finished the game in one go, I didn’t want to redo sections. The achievements unlock after you close the game, so you can’t tell you got them while working towards them. And one achievement is tedious/confusing to get, most thought it was bugged but it’s not. What Comes After is trying to teach something about life. It’s not original but it’s also not preachy, it’s presented elegantly. It’s comforting when you’re in the mood for reading and taking things slow. The normal price of €4 is okay for about an hour if you talk with every NPC. Expect an hour and half at most to get all the achievements.
This game was so emotional and touching.. It left me crying hard at the end wanting more, It really did make me think about the character and her choices for "what comes after"
⭐ Steam Review for: What Comes After ⭐ ⏱️ Playtime: 109 minutes This game felt less like playing a game and more like taking a quiet journey that gave me a lot to think about. 💭 What really carries this experience is the story, the conversations, and the messages behind them. As you travel through the train, you meet all kinds of different characters, and each one has something meaningful to say. Some conversations are sad, some are comforting, and some genuinely made me stop and think for a moment. There were quite a few quotes and conversations that genuinely resonated with me. Many of the quotes felt like things I needed to hear. The game talks about difficult feelings and personal struggles, but it does so in a gentle and comforting way instead of feeling overly heavy. 🚂💤 What I loved most is how much the game focuses on self-love, self-worth, and learning to be kinder to yourself. It encourages you to reflect on your own thoughts and feelings.❤️🩹 There isn't much gameplay, and whether you'll enjoy this game will probably depend on how much you care about the story and dialogue. But for me, the quotes, conversations, and lessons were the reason I kept going. 👶🏻🌳 It's a short experience, but one that left me thinking afterwards. Sometimes we can be our own harshest critics, and I think this game does a beautiful job reminding you to show yourself the same kindness you'd show someone else. 👻💬
