I'm an avid reader, so I thought it would have been an interesting experiment to try and see what they meant to do with this game. Unfortunately, the result was underwhelming. The script has its moments, but overall dialogues feel very naive at times. The "adventures" your customers face are not very exciting in general, incidentally they will mostly all get along with each other, and in a few days their private business will become everybody's business, especially the business of the real co-protagonist of this game, a customer called Freya, this green-haired leech of a character is a writer and will shamelessly spy on what your customers say and use their private business as material for her book. The story will only last a few hours, the plot is generally weak, and the dialogues are way too under developed to sound intriguing, at this point I might as well go to a real coffee shop and get better dialogues within a few weeks of attendance. The developers have tried to build a world where fantasy creatures all live in the same world (werewolves, fish-humans, cat-morphing humans, vampire...), with some sterile references to racism that is never developed. Your customers have 3 or 4 small animations that aren't evidently enough for this small adventure. Faithful to its title, the only really developed part of this game is the number of coffees you can make, around 30 types. Paying 17 euros (luckily not the price I've paid) for this, is definitely too much. The experiment per se is interesting, but quite bare boned. I don't think the game is "bad", but it's not as good as it appears either.
Coffee Talk is the kind of game you play when you're tired of video games. Not because games are exhausting, but because somewhere along the way they became obsessed with being louder. Bigger worlds, higher stakes, another apocalypse waiting to be stopped. Coffee Talk doesn't ask you to save anyone. It just asks you to make them a cup of coffee... and maybe listen to them for a while. The coffee was never the point. It was simply the reason people kept coming back night after night, long enough to let their guard down and tell the stories they had been carrying all along. Sometimes that's all a game needs to do to stay with you long after the credits roll.
Overall a letdown. There are some good parts - the music is excellent, the art is great, and I really liked the rain effects. Also the coffee brewing mechanic is totally fine. The pieces for a good game are here. But what kills it is the characters and writing. The characters are all uninteresting cliches and they all speak with the exact same voice. It doesn't matter if you're listening to the supermodel vampire or the basketcase writer or the surly orc, they're all using the same stilted and overly formal expressions and dialogue. It's like watching a one man play put on by someone who can't act. And you will be doing a LOT of watching because you don't get to make any choices. The characters request drinks and you either brew the one they want or you don't. It's a binary pass/fail system. If you brew the right drink your reward is getting to watch more dialogue. You never get to make a single choice or have any say over what your character does other than make the right or wrong drink. It's worse that your character has dialogue and frequently chimes in with their thoughts - you have no say over this and the writing is just as bad as all the other characters. I would have preferred a silent protagonist. Another gripe - the game is set in Seattle in 2020. Why? We spend more time hearing about Coachella than anything to with Seattle. It may as well have been Pleasantville in 1950. It's a completely wasted setting. There is definitely a good game to be made with this idea and setup. This wasn't it.
one of the best game ive ever played, not bcs its so deep in mechanic or story or anything, but because its feels real. it touch my heart, the character and situation there are feels like it can happen in real life, they feel so a live life. this game became my fav because it touch the same frequency i... no, we living in. if you want to play cozy relaxing game that have convo/story that feels down to earth and real, i really recommend it
This game has been such a fun ride story wise along with just helping me get closer with this now great friend group as we would just voice over different characters for the fun of it, I already have beaten the game on console but decided to get it on pc as well since it is such an amazing game. I also have both the second game and now Coffee Talk Tokyo this series has been a blast to follow and play and can't wait to see what other stories come out in the future
A piece of pretentious scribble about horned elves and cloven-hoofed dwarves
Like reading a beautiful book. Loved it. May you rest in peace Mohammad Fahmi.
I got extremely immersed playing to the point where i would genuinely forget that making coffee was a core part of the game. The story was interested, the endless mode was a fun challenge, and i would recommend giving it a try
