WATCH OUT this dawg be watchin'
Part of what makes this game hard to review objectively for me is the nostalgia of it. I originally played it on the 360, somehow before GTA V, and so it never came off as a "GTA-clone" to me. I recently replayed it, on PC for the first time, using mods, and while I still had a good experience, there were a few more sore spots that stood out more glaringly. For the good, as many people have said, the hacking mechanic is pretty fun and mostly intuitive, allowing you to takedown enemies on foot or in cars, and the car takedown animation is pretty cool. It does always make me wish it was useable just a little more, but I get that wasn't really the intent. I really like the core themes of the story as well, it wasn't the first ever piece of media to depict the idea of a smart city gone bad/technologic government espionage, but it does a good job of relating those themes to a modern day Chicago. Chicago as well is a pretty fun environment for a open-world game, and it's cool to see the weird ways they had to resize the city and its surroundings to fit a game. A few of the campaign set pieces are genuinely impressive to look at or walk around in, especially the final scene
where the entire city of Chicago is completely blacked-out. I wish this was something we could see a couple more times! The ambient sounds of the city in the background really make it stick, and when on the boat to see Damien, looking out on miles and miles of dead looking city is pretty haunting.
The game gives you a lot to do as side content, but to be fair, a lot of it is pretty repetitive missions, some of which feel far too repetitive. For the bad, the first and most obvious point is the driving mechanics. I don't really care what defenders of this will say, now that Cyberpunk's driving is (mostly) fixed, this certainly takes the cake for the worst driving mechanics in an open world game that I have personally played. Cars feel wildly floaty and unresponsive to both brakes and the throttle, leading them to drive like boats. On the other hand, motorcycles have snappy handling and great maneuverability, but even lightly touching and obstacle will fling Aiden off at high speeds. It wouldn't be so bad if it weren't for the fact that around 30-40% of story missions require driving within a time limit, or with some sort of restriction. While I do like the story's core themes and a lot of its side characters, the main character, Aiden, is a complete black hole of charisma and interest. He spends the entire game hemming and hawing about violence from the immediate get go, but the game doesn't really let you play pacifist in a meaningful way, and in fact forces you to kill multiple times, making that potentially interesting morally dilemma turn right into that video essay classic: ludonarrative dissonance. Also as ever negative review is correctly upset about, like all Ubi games, you need the Ubi launcher and a Ubi account, which is extra stupid, considering the multiplayer simply doesn't work at all. All in all, this is one of the last few new franchises that Ubi ever really bothered putting effort into, and it's worth a play, especially if you get it on a discount, which seems to come around pretty often. Try some mods as well, if you would like, as they can help with some optimization issues. Watchdogs 2 is also a pretty competent game with heart, and then Ubi just cratered the entire franchise's respect with Legion. At this point I think the most likely upcoming Watchdogs content will just be Aiden in Rainbow Six Siege, which I would at least like to see.
