Warhammer: Shadow of the Horned Rat (Classic)

Nostalgic, but clunky and showing it's age hard.

Pure unadultered nostalgia. Played this game on the playstation as a child. Still just as frickin hard as I remember it, but I did actually beat it back in the day. I remember having to be pretty cheesy though. Its a really old game, pretty cheap if you wanna give it a whirl, but...its from an era before a lot of quality of life things were added to games. It is pretty in depth for a playstation game though, maybe it was also on the computer too, but I was more of a console gamer back then.

Without the ability to scroll the camera, it's unplayable. Spent many an hour on my playstation way back playing this, but can't see me playing this again. Real shame.

Super nostalgic graphics, can be a little tough and awkward a times but still a great play. If you are looking for pure nostalgia I'd definitely recommend.

Thanks to everyone involved in bringing this little gem to modern PCs in all its unpolished, Nintendo Hard glory. I played it back when I was a kid, got to Revenge/Loren/Zufbar split, and gave up pretty soon after. Now, I came back and climbed that mountain. Did I rage during the game? Sure. Did I say "THIS IS ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥" more than once? Of course (EF those dragons! No idea how you're supposed to beat them without Hunting Spear). But do I regret spending 15 hours on it? Hell no. I think what I love the most is that it's hand-made. Today, when you encounter a game that screws you over and makes you lose, it's always some sort of rogue-like, with abundant procedural generation. So if a level is BS - it's just a whim of RNG, and not a conscious effort to make you suffer. Here, the pain you feel is intentional. No one wants you to beat the game. They want you to be beaten. Even Dark Souls is nowhere close to this, because you can always go back to grind a couple levels or get a better equip, and there's no random BS like "oh hey, your cannon just blew up. Good luck!" I like that "challenge the player" approach far more than modern "let them win, reviews will be more favorable that way". Also, the game has surprisingly competent story, with plenty of cutscenes and voiced briefings. Good music as well. You can tell that the team really cared about this game, instead of just rushing it to meet deadlines and investor expectations.

I beat this game on the Playstation once upon a time.....somehow. Whatever feeling of nostalgia I had when I played the first couple of missions, evaporated pretty quickly as I realized that the battles are pretty heavily dependent on RNG and strategy is only minimally important, most of the time. And whatever you do, don't level your squads too quick, it gets prohibitively expensive to field powerful units. I wouldn't recommend this game unless you hate using your time wisely.

My lord - this game, I remember loving it as a kid but it has not aged well, my game kept randomly minimising in the middle of a mission, and the lack of explaination is tragic. I refunded, maybe they will do something with it later down the line but you need the patience of a saint to play this game in this day and age

this game is very old and extremely clunky in controls. once you are used to it, it is totaly playable but its clear this is from the very early years of strategy pc games. the amount of love and creativity that was poured in this game is beyond belief. it is a difficult game with a lot whole lot of depth. if you are in for a challange this game is well worth it. if you want a more streamlined experience with much better controls try dark omen instead.

A Classic game and definitely among the best Warhammer Fantasy games historically. You lead the Grudgebringers, a mercenary band in the world of Warhammer in order to achieve wealth and reputation, only to find yourself facing off against a world destroying threat in the form of the Skaven! The controls and UI take a fair bit of time to adjust to, especially for modern times as it is quite rudimentary by comparison. Players should read the manual to understand the mechanics but it is the best rendition of the tabletop rules to the PC to date. Once it clicks however, this game is wonderful, if not grotesquely difficult. Brutally hard, unforgiving and using a guide or walkthrough is suggested. However, after finishing it today, I can highly recommend it for those looking for a serious challenge and a visit to the first video game rendition of Warhammer Fantasy.

I loved and completed this game on release, but my word it hasnt aged well! The Controls are awkward and inflexible, the field of view is tiny and the interface is just punishing in general. My horse for a tool tip so im not constantly tabbing into the essential PDF to find out what the buttons do, or being able to do things whilst paused. I guess im spoiled by modern gaming? But yeah, badly needs a quality of life update sadly.
