Warhammer? Check. Tactics? Check. Pseudo Base building? Check. Compelling story? Yeah I guess. I'm at least invested in these Seeds and want to find out more about the big bad Nurgle boy. I'm really enjoying this gameplay loop and the character customization.
The gameplay wears out its welcome, but this is a solid first entry. It’s best played as a race against the clock rather than a long strategy game.
To be softlocked near the end of the game after putting over 80 hours in a save file is just too brutal... I don't want to play another 80 hours just to see the ending!! The game is fun, very cool mechanics, plot, voice acting, graphics, the whole thing, but I believe there should have been an automatic response to prevent such softlocking.
The game becomes unplayable after a while due to sheer length of enemy turns. Very pretty though.
A solid tactics game. So this game was on sale during the Warhammer Skulls event so I thought I’d give it a go since I recently replayed through XCOM Enemy Unknown and was looking for something similar. And that's exactly what this game is: XCOM with Space Marines but what did I think? Firstly, while the game ran fine for me for the most part, it does have an issue where when I first tried to launch the game it would get stuck on a grey screen and then also lock my mouse cursor, so when I wanted to close it with task manager I had to use the arrow buttons on my keyboard to do so. To fix it I had to disable steam overlay for the game, because that causes an issue but after that it would always launch and play fine. Visually, I actually really love how this game looks. The environments and character models look decent and the cutscenes are pretty well done. The game overall has this almost 3D animated film look to everything but with the grittiness of Warhammer 40k. I especially love how the 3 main characters of Ectar, Inquistor Vakir and Dominus Lunete look. If you have played XCOM then much of this game's mechanics will be very familiar. Like I said I am fresh off a playthrough of XCOM so I could immediately see the similar structure but also where I feel like this game improves upon it. Firstly you have the management of your ship which works similarly to the base in XCOM. You have your 3 main advisors that manage the three main aspects which are Research, Engineering and then your Space Marines. Research is important since it’s used for story progression as well as granting you new stratagems which are these cards you can play during a mission that grant your units buffs, heal them or prevent the warp surge from growing which is very useful. Your Space Marines are thankfully a lot more durable then the soldiers in XCOM as they generally take more damage and what I like is that when their health hits zero they will go into a downed state and as long as they don’t get hit they will get back up after a turn or 2. They will become critically wounded and will need to recover but when they do they will get an augment which gives them some kind of stat buff like extra health or more crit damage which I thought was a cool system. They can only do this a few times before they permanently bite the farm but it was a nice addition. Another thing I love is combat. Firstly there is no chance to hit as generally when you aim or melee an enemy, you will hit them unless they're behind full cover. I love this since I hate chance to hit as it's often extremely luck based and the RNG always tends to favor the enemies over you so I’m glad it's not here. They also did a lot more with destructible environments as your units can elbow into pillars or shoot down statues that can fall onto enemies and deal tons of damage to them or destroy whatever cover they were huddled up behind. It never got old for me. I also like that sometimes when you attack an enemy you will get the option to target one of their limbs or parts of their body which lets you do things like disable special abilities they have or permanently decrease their armor so they have less on subsequent turns. And this can be even used on bosses which was satisfying. I even found it funny when you pick the disable ranged or melee weapon option and your knights will just chop the enemy unit's arm off, and seeing them run around afterwards always got me to chuckle. As for my negatives, the boss fights are pretty terrible overall as they range from laughably easy to crushingly hard even on the easy difficulty. Some of the bosses I could beat in 2 turns but then there’s others that rely on gimmicks like when they summon totems that make them invincible until you get one of your guys over there to destroy it (the final boss used this a lot) while still having tons of minions to stop you along the way. One boss that you fight a couple of times throughout the campaign could teleport around the map, teleport your units across the map or disappear and then reappear when you try to shoot him with a ranged weapon so that was pretty awful. The mission variety also gets very boring as their’s only really 2 types of missions of either defending 3 points against waves of enemies with some guardsmen (who are utterly useless with storm trooper accuracy btw) or destroy a number of bloomspawn which also has a hidden timer if you take too long that can lead to a mission fail. The bloomspawn one has some variants as it could either be to destroy a couple of giant plant monsters or kill 3 units that have the corrupted seeds in them. These aren’t bad mission types by any means and the combat does carry it and stop it from becoming too boring but some variety is definitely needed. One last negative I have is the Grand Master reports which take the place of the council in XCOM. This is an area where I feel like they fumbled as it can be really punishing at times. Most of the time the Grand Master doesn’t even give you requisition points which are important to get upgrades at the end of each report or get mission rewards like better armor and guns. No, instead most of the time he demands stuff from you like a bunch of your resources or he will want to “borrow” some of your space marines (for up to 90 days!) and in that case you can’t even pick which ones to give him, so he just can take some of your best guys at random. And if you refuse this which is what I often did, he will punish you like once he locked the armory for a whole month which meant I couldn’t upgrade at the end of the report, recruit new knights or even accept mission rewards for like 30 days. Like do you want me to rid the galaxy of plague marines or not? Lastly, the story was actually pretty decent and better than I expected. Once again, it uses the same structure as XCOM where your 3 advisors on the ship act as the main characters in the cutscenes. And like I said the cutscenes are well animated and I grew to like the cast. The voice acting as well is top notch. Another cool detail I liked was when you go to each section of the ship to give new assignments to your advisors you can actually talk to them and have interesting conversations. It’s not as in-depth as something like Mass Effect but I still appreciated that addition and again it felt like an innovation from what XCOM had. But overall, despite the negatives I mentioned, I did really enjoy this game. In some ways I found it to be better then XCOM but the negatives do bring it down from completely dethroning the aforementioned game. But otherwise, it’s a recommendation from me.
chunky fun
Yeah, loved Xcom. Warhammer fan. And this just scratched my itch. Was waiting for a long time because i was in doubt, but its was a lot of fun. Get through the barrier of tutorial and see if you like it.
this game can be fun. if you liked mechanicus dispite its flaws then this game might be for you. if however you value your time (not all that likely for a 40k fan i know) then this game may not be up your alley. turn speed up does exist but doesent do enough, half the time spent during enemy turns is from the camera panning over to whoever is doing somthing, and the enemies take turns in stupid orders that cause that constant panning.(sometimes if your lucky and use speedup the game just wont bother panning to like half the enemies). this game is hard. I had to start a second save file after going to far in the story too quickly. (partly becuase i crashed and it currupted my safe, with my newest save being over 3 hours ago. missions where you defend survitors against waves of enemies are both quite unfair and quite unfun, these missions easly take an hour each if you do them in one atempt the dlcs do not give you as much power creep as they give the enemies and missions. my advice if your going to play this game is to make saves often and/or play your first attempt as a learning experince.
game about knights who are grey :)
