It's 40k-flavored XCOM-style squad-based tactical gameplay. Unlike XCOM, however, you take on the role of the legendary and secretive order of sci-fi daemon-hunters, Grey Knights. Instead of fighting aliens, you fight horrible monstrosities known as "daemons" mutated by the Plague God, Nurgle. Gameplay is solid. As mentioned, if you've played XCOM or games of that style, you will quickly understand how this game works: you assume the role of a squad of four Grey Knights of varying combat roles, ranging from the tanky melee-focused Justicar, the range-focused gunner Purgator, the lightning-fast teleport Interceptor, among many other types of combat roles. Unlike XCOM, this game is more melee-focused as well, I'd argue. It strongly rewards fairly aggressive, yet tactical, gameplay. There is also the element of a "Warp Surge" which is the "mission timer" as when a Warp Surge occurs, it causes a random effect that benefits your enemy or harms you. Other than the tactical element, there is the strategic element of managing your "Battle Barge" (think a truly MASSIVE Gothic-looking spire that flies through space as a combination spaceship/foundry/temple. It's crazy). Anyway, you manage your Battle Barge like you'd manage your "Bunker" or "Aircraft" in XCOM. It is your base of operations and you have to make meaningful choices deciding which missions you take and which you must pass up. It is wise to go for the servitors early! They are your builders and needed to rebuild the ship. Like XCOM as well, you upgrade/repair your Battle Barge with new Facilities and empower your soldiers with new Research. Research/Construction often take some time, so order of operations is critical as well as managing what resources you have, as some Research or Facilities require tons of time and spores (the currency you get from winning missions) or tons of time and servitors, which are often only gotten from missions. Finally, there are events to the game that shake things up. You encounter them randomly, and some choices can really benefit you or mess you up! I will be honest, some of them were so punishing I paused the game if I hadn't saved in a while and looked up the best solution. LOL But of course you can play more honestly than I, and you can even challenge yourself to single-save mode: Grandmaster Mode (Ironman Mode in XCOM, I believe?). I will say the Assassin DLC is pretty good, but I don't really recommend the dreadnought and definitely not the Kaldor Draigo (which I don't own myself) as I've read he is recruited early in game at max level and is kind of a broken character. I haven't played through the dreadnought DLC yet, but as I understand it, it can only be used in specific missions. The Assassin DLC is fun because it adds four new roles: the long-range sniper Vindicare, or the brutal and bloody Eversor, or the Callidus (I believe?) that has a poisoned blade that can literally stealth by going invisible and run fast, or the (I can't remember the name) really cool anti-psyker one that destroys enemy magic-users. Anyway, they are quite fun and worthy alternatives even to your Battle-Brother Grey Knights. All-in-all, I'd recommend this game to most in that it stands on its own, but especially to those who enjoy the Warhammer 40k Universe, such as myself. Numerical Breakdown: Main Game Graphics: 8.5/10 Audio: 9.5/10 (I even recommend the soundtrack!) Gameplay: 9/10 Overall: 9/10 Recommend? YES! For the Emperor
This might be the most poorly balanced game I've ever seen in my life. And it's a single-player only game, so you better believe this is quite an achievement.
Think XCOM with less class variety and worse balancing that quickly becomes almost impossible but wearing a cool WH40k skin.
I've never put down a game due to story. I always try to finish and tough it out to see how things play out. But honestly I've never met a in game character that had me more annoyed than this game has. It's almost infuriating having to play the game just to hear this character being so ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ annoying. Game is great and if you like XCOM, you'll like this, but honestly I can't recommend it myself.
There's so, so much I love about this game but when it comes to difficulty balancing it smacks of junior designers not understanding that you need players to leave your game wanting more, and not leaving frustrated. If I get the sequel it won't be until it is heavily discounted.
Had zero interest in continuining after running into one of those "protect the servitors" missions. It's unfair to the point of being insulting, the developers obviously didn't put enough effort into playtesting it.
As an XCOM and Warhammer fan i loved this game. Be warned though, this game would be enjoyable for most (including myself) on the easiest difficulty. It can be quite unforgiving both in terms of the missions and the random events on the strategic map.
