schönes ruhige altes spiel ...
easy to play, challanging
A panzer general turn based game.
This is a great strategy game for people looking for something more grand-scale than the usual squad-based tactics games we usually see like Mechanicus and Chaos Gate, and more traditional than Dawn of War 1/2 (shame there never was a third right ?) The graphics are obviously nothing to go crazy over but I like it, it looks nice for its style and everything is clear, you instantly know what you're looking at. You get to play around the dozens of tanks, artillery pieces and infantry units fielded by the Guard, and later on by various Space Marines chapters. On that last note, I am a bit disappointed that the deeper you get into the campaign, the less optimal it becomes to still be using Guard infantry or Russ tanks. With the sheer number of heavy and superheavy units the Orks get in the later levels, you're sort of shooting yourself in the foot if you're not using tons of Baneblade chassis and Space Marine infantry. Guard infantry, even veterans, can easily be destroyed in a single turn if a single superheavy unit just looks at them, Ogryns fare batter but you're still better off using Astartes which is kind of a shame. I would have liked to see a system where you have a very strict limit for the amount of Marine units you can bring, making them into shock troops while the core of your army would be made of cheaper, but more numerous (and hopefully experienced if you managed to get them through several missions) guard units, including non-superheavy tanks. Still I really like the game, it's tough at points but I guess that's accurate lore-wise. I managed to sort of install the More Factions mod, at least to get more units for the Guard and Marines, but it's a shame you can't play Sentinels optimally given how fragile and weak they are.
I Love this game! It's fantastic and full of fun missions and stories. the guard are really fun to play and the missions are varied enough that you never feel bored. The Marines that come later are cool (although dreadnoughts are your best friend I've found they are easily the biggest bang for your buck) My favorite mission is holding out till the marines arrive as you fall back between 3 different lines of defense it captures the imagination and really makes you feel the desperation. seriously one of my favorite strategy games. which it had a new version with more story and where guardsmen are just alittle better.
Excellent game that can run on a potato and quite moddable- though most mods are hard to find now it's from the 'all stats are in a text file' era.
I'm not a fan of turn-based, real-tme and etc of strtegies, but this one is interesting and fun
