Waking Violet is a top down puzzle game from Marco Mastropaolo / MixedBag Srl where you use spells and a rewind time mechanism (which will be used quite readily) to navigate through complex levels. You play as Violet, a shy teen, who is trapped within a dream from which she just cannot awake. To escape from this dream, you’ll have to solve the puzzles on each of the forty-two levels. There are other obstacles which will also hinder your progress, like enemies. To solve the puzzles, you’ll have to move blocks to create bridges, or to place them on switches that open a gateway. You can also clone yourself and use other magic spells, like fire and ice. When using magic, you’ll need to collect mana, which can be found in bottles throughout the levels, although getting them can be tricky at times and you’ll only have a certain amount, so use it wisely. Fire will destroy any blocks or enemies in your path. Freeze will allow you to freeze a clone or an enemy into an ice cube, so that you can manoeuvre them to where they are needed, like using them as a bridge to cross water. You can also clone yourself as many times as you’d like if you have enough mana to do so, and you’ll certainly need them to get through some of the puzzles. You’ll discover additional spells as you move through the game. On some of the levels you’ll come across ice floors, where you’ll slide along until you hit either an obstacle or the edge of the level. These ice floors can be very tricky and will cause you to really think about how to proceed. When you start a level, the enemies are motionless, so you can get around them with ease. But on each level, you must reach an alarm clock as one of the objectives; when this happens, enemies will wake up and add to your troubles. Some enemies can only move within a certain range, like just going up and down a few squares once you’ve collected the alarm clock. Others will hunt you down; you can’t out-run them, so make sure you’re prepared! As soon as you collect the alarm clock it will open a portal, which is your ticket out of that level. Block paths, freeze or trap the enemies; anything you can do so you can reach the portal and escape! You will die and make mistakes as you tackle obstacles in your way, but luckily you can rewind time, so you can rectify any mistakes made. If you find that doing it one way isn’t working, you can go back and try another route. Options consists of Language, Music On/Off, Resolution, Vibration and Controls. There are no options to remap the keyboard or gamepad. I couldn’t use my Xbox pad to play the game; I’m not sure if it’s on its way out or the game just wasn’t picking it up, so I played using just the keyboard, which wasn’t a problem (mouse isn’t needed). The graphics are nicely hand-drawn within own unique style, and the music is rather pleasant. Positives + Fun challenging game + Nice hand drawn graphics + Achievements + Good Music Negatives - Can’t remap keys - No Cards - Hair loss (from frustration) A fantastic top down puzzle game which will have you reaching for the rewind button more times than when you found your dad’s gardening videos. 8/10 Key provided by developer/publisher for review purposes via THE CPT FROGGY CLUB! The ambitious, ambiguous plot gives the game a dream-like feel as you work your way through many ethereal, surreal levels, using potions and wits to overcome a labyrinth of puzzles and a growing sense of dread. The game has a great 'take-back' feature allowing you to step-back through a puzzle which is incredibly useful and makes the gameplay fresh and fun. A fun, dark and solid puzzle game with enough unique qualities to make it an indie classic.

Summary

What dreams may come... a dark fable shrouds this hidden gem of a puzzle game.
Pros: - nice level design - good, solid controls - innovative step-back puzzle feature - great pacing and a narrative that holds the whole thing together - hours and hours of really tricky puzzles to be had! Cons: - it is a block-pushing game, so there will be a lot that feels familiar - some solid, infuriating puzzles however questionable replay value https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1748252200

See Also...
https://store.steampowered.com/app/705610
All boyflea reviews can be found at Good Indie Free Game Reviews

Trop classique
Waking Violet is a well made puzzler game. You have four powers, each requiring mana, and you need to complete the levels objective using the mana you can find without getting stuck. It can become quite difficult and I must admit my video ended early when I couldn't figure out how to complete a level. It's probably simple but I just couldn't get it at the time. There is also a time rewind function that I found very helpful. It's a good quality product and at $6.99 it is very well priced. So those of you who like a puzzler, check out my video on YouTube to see some game play in action.... https://youtu.be/k6OrM6X_TOo Thanks for watching, please like, subscribe and comment.
This is a well put together game with some nice puzzles. It felt somewhat inspired by Adventures of Lolo (half-tile movement, instant lasers you block with crates and most enemies start asleep) but with enough differences to make it unique. There are a fair few Sokoban-style block pushing puzzles, so maybe hold off if that's not what you enjoy. My biggest complaint would be that the protagonist moves rather slowly, so it gets a bit tedious just waiting for her to get places. Still, I enjoyed my time with the game (3-4 hours to get all endings) and recommend it.
This is a very fun game. The puzzles get hard pretty quickly and there are sooooo many. It's very imaginative & I loved every second of this game. I've got a playlist here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pLnhzbUNbV0&list=PLyXV7xFoTUtWv2XwtZBeqZkyk4FwBMlM9
Waking Violet is a thoughtfully designed puzzle adventure developed by Marco Mastropaolo and MixedBag Srl and published by MixedBag Srl. Blending logic-based gameplay with a surreal dream narrative, the game delivers an experience that constantly challenges the player's intellect while exploring themes of self-discovery, courage, and personal growth. Although its presentation initially appears simple, the game gradually reveals a surprisingly deep puzzle system built around magical abilities, environmental manipulation, and time-rewinding mechanics that encourage experimentation and creative thinking. The story revolves around Violet, a young girl trapped inside a mysterious dream world from which she cannot seem to escape. As she searches for a way to wake up, she encounters strange environments, magical forces, and increasingly complex challenges that stand between her and freedom. The narrative unfolds gradually through the progression of puzzles rather than lengthy cutscenes, creating an experience where gameplay and storytelling are closely connected. The dreamlike setting allows the developers to introduce imaginative concepts and unusual environments while maintaining an underlying emotional narrative about overcoming fears and confronting inner struggles. One of the game's greatest strengths is the way it integrates puzzle mechanics into the world itself. Rather than presenting isolated logic challenges, every obstacle feels like a natural part of Violet's journey. The levels are designed as interconnected spaces filled with hazards, movable objects, magical barriers, and environmental puzzles that require careful observation. Success depends on understanding how different systems interact and finding ways to manipulate them to create a path forward. The spell system serves as the foundation for much of the gameplay. Throughout the adventure, Violet gains access to magical abilities that allow her to influence the world around her. These powers expand the range of possible solutions and transform how players approach each challenge. New spells continually introduce fresh ideas, ensuring that the gameplay remains engaging even after many hours. Rather than relying on repetitive puzzle structures, the game constantly builds upon previously introduced mechanics and encourages players to combine abilities in increasingly creative ways. Perhaps the most innovative feature is the time-rewind mechanic. Whenever a mistake is made, players can reverse actions and return to an earlier state without restarting an entire level. This feature dramatically changes the rhythm of puzzle solving. Instead of punishing experimentation, the game actively encourages it. Players are free to test ideas, observe outcomes, and adjust their strategies without fear of losing significant progress. The result is a puzzle experience that feels challenging but rarely frustrating, as every failure becomes part of the learning process. Resource management adds another layer of complexity. Many magical abilities require mana, forcing players to consider not only how to solve a puzzle but also how to do so efficiently. Managing resources introduces strategic decision-making and prevents players from relying on trial and error alone. Careful planning becomes just as important as understanding the mechanics themselves, creating a rewarding balance between experimentation and optimization. The level design deserves significant praise for its consistency and progression. Early stages introduce concepts gradually, allowing players to become familiar with the mechanics before facing more difficult challenges. As the adventure continues, puzzles become increasingly intricate and often require multiple abilities to be used in combination. The difficulty rises steadily without feeling unfair, creating a satisfying sense of growth as players develop a deeper understanding of the game's systems. One of the most impressive aspects of Waking Violet is how effectively it rewards intelligence and observation. The game rarely relies on arbitrary solutions or obscure logic. Instead, every puzzle is designed around clearly established rules that players can learn and master. This approach creates a strong sense of accomplishment because solutions feel earned rather than discovered by accident. Completing a particularly challenging level often delivers the same satisfaction as solving a difficult riddle. Visually, the game adopts a hand-drawn artistic style that perfectly complements its dreamlike atmosphere. The environments are colorful, imaginative, and filled with whimsical details that make each area feel distinct. The artwork balances charm and mystery, creating a world that feels both inviting and slightly unsettling. This visual identity helps distinguish the game from many other puzzle titles and reinforces the feeling that players are exploring a realm governed by dream logic rather than reality. The soundtrack contributes greatly to the overall experience. Soft, atmospheric music accompanies players throughout their journey, creating a calm environment that supports concentration. Because puzzle games often require long periods of thought, the quality of the soundtrack is particularly important, and Waking Violet succeeds in providing music that enhances immersion without becoming distracting. The audio design helps maintain a relaxing tone even when the puzzles themselves become demanding. The game's primary weakness is its difficulty level. While puzzle enthusiasts will likely appreciate the complexity of later stages, some players may find certain challenges intimidating. The game expects patience, careful observation, and a willingness to think through problems rather than rely on quick reflexes. Those looking for a more casual experience may occasionally feel overwhelmed by the intricacy of the later puzzles. However, for fans of thoughtful puzzle design, this challenge is one of the game's greatest strengths. Another positive aspect is the game's respect for player autonomy. It rarely interrupts the experience with excessive tutorials or hints. Instead, it trusts players to learn through exploration and experimentation. This confidence in the player's ability to solve problems contributes significantly to the satisfaction of progression and helps make every completed puzzle feel meaningful. Waking Violet ultimately stands out as an intelligent and carefully crafted puzzle adventure that combines strong mechanics with an engaging atmosphere. Its magical abilities, innovative rewind system, challenging level design, and dream-inspired narrative create an experience that feels both distinctive and rewarding. The game consistently encourages creativity and logical thinking, making it an excellent choice for players who enjoy solving complex problems and uncovering hidden possibilities. For fans of puzzle games that prioritize clever design over spectacle, Waking Violet offers a memorable and deeply satisfying journey. Its blend of imaginative world-building, challenging puzzles, beautiful hand-drawn visuals, and thoughtful progression makes it one of the more compelling indie puzzle adventures available. While its difficulty may not appeal to everyone, those willing to engage with its challenges will discover a rewarding experience that lingers long after the final puzzle has been solved. Rating: 6/10
Für ein 2d-Puzzlegame bestimmt ziemlich gut, kann ich aber schwer beurteilen. Violet sollte wegen dieser Träume jedenfalls einen Facharzt konsultieren. Danke, Ende.
