This is as far as I know the first Rome VR where you can actually move free, I mean, the movement system is so far only teleport, but at least you really can move around. The area covered is also relatively large. I was astounded so see how large many of the structures actually were, but also how strange "walled in" the many areas of Rome felt, quite in contrast to modern cities. So it was a real eye opener. A few downsides, which I hope are worked on: not all buildings have notes, so some temples you don't know which was which. Also I hope there will be an Oculus-friendly way to turn with the stick. So far you have to turn physically. I free move mode would help and some improvements with performace and a bit more detail maybe. But other than that it is the best Rome VR so far, and I did not regret buying it. I recommend it to any Rome fan.
Experienced on the Oculus Rift with Touch Controllers. Partial Review. 1060 GTX, i7 6700, 16 gb RAM, Win10
Please note that I was offered this product free as part of the Steam Curator Connect program. This did not effect my score. I don't normally list my computer specs since it's on my profile, but it's a big part of my experience with this app. First of all, I think this is a great educational app. It's really amazing that a person has done this. This is ancient Rome faithfully reconstructed and brought to VR. You can view these glorious buildings street level or choose to see them scale model. You move around via teleportation nodes. At most of these buildings, you will see a blue avatar which will have some information on the building as well as an option to view a scale model of the building. I actually enjoyed watching the scale models more than the actual size ones. The reason for that is because of the graphical issues I encountered. This peformance issue is why I cannot give a full review. On my rig, performance was not very good. Graphics were muddy and there was lots of pop-in and some jitteriness. I'm not sure why, I can only think maybe all the pigeons were causing this. I wish there was an option in-game to mess with the settings. There's only the option at the start to change resolution and go from normal to better graphics, but mine was already set to normal. I think the resolution only effects the screen mirror. Rate 5/10. So all in all, I enjoyed what the app had to offer, even if I couldn't really enjoy it because of the performance issue. If you have a 1060 you may want to think twice before purchasing this app. Would love to give a full review if app is ever updated to deal with optimization / graphical issues.

It's a great work accomplished by an indie developer. That's what I hoped from 'Rome Reborn' to be. You can move around in all locations, you get useful information at many places, you can see actual photographs for comparison (wish these would be in 3D), and you can access nice 3D overview models. It could have some more details and I would prefer smooth locomotion over teleportation, but this does not diminish the value of the experience.
Clever app design and can see lots of research involved. It doesn't look very polished but I understand the huge effort. Hope the creator keeps improving it and sending updates.
This review is featured on Roomscale VR's curator page. We went through VR Rome expecting $15 worth of content or at least $15 worth of polish. Well, we could say that it has potential to offer either the content or the polish, but it isn't even an Early Access title and it offers neither currently. There's very little on offer in this VR app. The controls are sloppy. The details are lacking, and it just feels like an asset flip for the most part. That said, it really does have a few things going for it. If the dev would expand on this app's feature set and improve the controls and the visuals, this could easily be worth $15 to visit ancient Rome. First, we have the map. The map is easily the coolest feature, because it lets you click anywhere and go there. That's cool. I would love to see the map utilized in a more enjoyable way, though. Make it more polished. Give it a nicer UI with more QOL features, like a toggleable legend. Teleporting was the only method of locomotion. I would like to see smooth locomotion for the sake of immersion. Let me actually pretend to be traversing Rome. Give me locomotion options other than teleportation, and don't you care force vignette effects upon me! The teleport mechanic was also very basic. I would love to see this better polished. Then, we have the small details of the scenery. Some areas are almost done right with flowing water fountains and statues everywhere as well as birds flying around. Other areas are just empty and uninteresting. I would like to see more texturing and greater attention to detail. Moving clouds and a more dynamic skybox would be a nice touch, too. There were too many times in this app when I noticed the polygons. That simply shouldn't happen in VR. We're going for immersion and scale, so go all out! It's ok if you have to optimize a mesh here and there, but I shouldn't have to settle for hexagonal pipes everywhere. That said, the scale was mostly right. You get the real sense of being in old Rome, before the ground level changed. The model viewer was a welcomed feature, but it felt tacked on. It could potentially be integrated into the main level more. Instead of having to load an external scene for each model (or set of models), just make all the other models in the main environment invisible or spawn an extra model into that world. Then, improve on the navigational controls. Look at art apps like Tilt Brush for inspiration. Overall, while I feel like this isn't a terrible experience (far from it), it is too overpriced to even consider recommending it in its current state. It needs a ton of work and redesign, and I don't see an early access label anywhere on its store page, so I doubt it'll get the updates it needs. If it receives any major updates later on, I'll definitely give it another look.
It has potential, but it's very basic. It needs higher end textures, NPCs that move around. Proper refined 3D trees not 2D ones like Duke Nukem 3D lol. It needs more life and would be nice to see the Roman roads and chariots. There are also no interiors or objects to pickup, nothing to really learn from. You also can't freely move around, it's teleportation around the map set teleportation at that :( If the developers keep working on this then it'll be great, but if they leave it as then it needs to basically be really dirt cheap.
