Voidrun takes a fresh idea and capitalizes on it

PITCH
Voidrun is a game where instead of shooting enemies with a gun or some other standard form of combat. To kill anything in this game, you circle them with void orbs, similar to games like Qix and Pokemon Ranger. It’s incredibly satisfying and puts a very different twist to the oversaturated roguelite genre.
MODES
There are 3 different game modes to play in Voidrun. Adventure mode is a more casual take on the game with no permadeath and upgrade shops, Arcade is your typical arcade mode where one hit kills you, and you grind for score on a huge flat plane (no online leaderboards. Sorry!), and the classic (roguelite) mode is where the focus seems to be, play through 4 different planets, each with 3 levels, and just try to win.Voidrun is stock full of content, each mode bringing a lot of replayability.
DOWNGRADE SYSTEM
The roguelite mode comes with a system that isn’t done often and usually isn’t done well: an upgrade downgrade system. With every planet you defeat, you lose one of your four upgrades. Unfortunately, this means by the end of each run it ends up pretty samey, but the upgrades technically aren’t required to beat any planet in Voidrun. On top of that, you get a choice of planet, so you can choose if you want to go to a planet when you’re super powerful at the start, or at the end of your run.
PROBLEM
Voidrun has a big problem that can and will turn away several people almost immediately. And that is the way of acquiring more void orbs. To do this, you either have to kill an enemy, or break up the ground under you. Enemies are usually too difficult to deal with when using the starting number of orbs, so the first 50% of time in a level is spent wandering around destroying the ground looking for canisters. It breaks up the pacing significantly and will hurt a lot of players’ enjoyment of the game, so I think it’s absolutely important to mention. I’m able to look past this, because my enjoyment of the game ramps up when I start killing enemies, the other half of the gameplay. I’m not sure how else the game could give you canisters, and it’s a core mechanic that I don’t think can be changed easily.
RUN VARIETY
Enemy and planet variety is good. There are about 10 planets to play through and each comes with it’s own enemies. Your approach to each enemy is slightly different, keeping the gameplay interesting. Each planet is balanced to the point where I’m not sure there’s a definitive answer to “what planet is the easiest/hardest”. There are several different ships to choose from (once unlocked), so if you don’t like starting with random power-ups, you can just choose a ship that starts with your preference. Overall, run variety might be a tad low because you aren’t picking up any passives, and there aren’t synergies or anything. Run variety comes almost strictly from the planets you choose from.
CONCLUSION
If you can look past the problems mentioned, Voidrun is one of the most interesting and unique games I’ve played this year. For 10 dollars you’re getting a very fun game, and I recommend full price! Either this is purposely aimed to have a "classic game" purist philosophy, or it's one of the most personally devastating designs I've played in a long time. I can't complain about anything content-related; worlds, graphics, enemy designs, procedural animations... It's all outstanding, a marvel to look at. It really shows that love has been put into every singular piece. But man, playing it was a nightmare. Again, if you guys were going with making a classic game to its fullest extent and nothing else, cool! You nailed it! And it has way more love and charm than most games of the era I've ever played! But as a medium we've learned to make more cohesive designs, that actually care about UX. Everything isn't hard-as nails and frustrating just for the fun of it anymore. So, having made games myself, I feel the need of judging it with a critical eye and I hope it helps in any way. I feel like it fills the player's actions with chores rather than obstacles. Orbs don't come back to you in any shape or form, and you're punished for breaking larger areas by the orbs getting scattered again and again. So, the logical reasoning is, that the speed of the ship being slow, the game is encouraging you to break smaller areas with greater control. But as soon as you adopt that mindset, you start getting punished again by teleporting enemies (which are unreasonably hard to catch), bigger than expected hitboxes in some others, and bullets that take no time to fill up the screen. It feels as it's forcing you to play in a very specific way, which is not very friendly. Avoiding bullets works well! Although I feel they should have a bigger hitbox when colliding with orbs, as they usually sneak in tight spaces and are very confusing to dodge. A big problem is that in most worlds rocks aren't visible at all, which I understand is a palette limitation, and bumping into them is enfuriating to say the least. Other than that, I think it has a very good foundation, and although it hasn't explored the elements it uses to it's fullest (specially the main mechanic), I think it's a neat and well packaged NES-like experience. I'm 100% open to change my review if the game changes in the future, I'm trying to write this as constructive as I can as there's a lot of good stuff in here :) TL:DR: Amazing art/content/individual elements, but very flawed and self-limiting design. Minor notes: -Orbs could come back to you when killing an enemy/breaking a rock -Orbs could get less scattered when breaking bigger areas (a bit less distance, a lot less scatter?) -Bullets could have a bigger hitbox when impacting with orbs to avoid them sneaking in very tight spaces -Rocks should have clear visual indicators of it's presence (a shadow?), in case they look too much like the floor. -Those shooting-teleporting enemies could take a little longer to teleport -Your ship could have a slightly higher speed by default -Putting down orbs could slightly accelerate your ship -Absorving a flame orb feels very sudden and punishing, specially without being aware of the mechanic in the first place. General notes: -UI feels very misplaced and unintuitive, it could be easily substituted with a dynamic UI: ·A secondary circle, like the absorb area, that represents the remaining orbs and gets bigger or smaller as you run out ·Instead of a thermometer, which is an element introduced suddently and is quite hard to understand at first, it could just be a shader that brings up warmer colors on the screen as you get hotter, with some screenshake and audio feedback. -The main mechanic isn't explored at all, how about multiple breaking areas, combos, or even spells you can cast by making different shapes? Movement and placing orbs feels great, and I think it can be better exploited -Game feels a bit unbalanced (speeds and projectiles corresponding to the stage size, etc...)
Voidrun is easily among the top 5% of arcade games when it comes to creativity, content and game settings. With 3 different modes, a ton of achievements, and original gameplay, you are getting a pretty good value for a relatively low price. I mean the game is just really solid, but I have some nitpicks when it comes to difficulty and enemy balancing. The thing is, most of the enemies in this game can attack and move very rapidly without telegraphing their abilities. For example, there is a ghost enemy in the game that has a nice delay and flashing before it attacks, and then there is a space ship that just shoots and flashes at the same time. You have to be very close to enemies to surround them which takes around 2-5 seconds, and yet most of them can move into any direction under 2 seconds, so sometimes your deaths can be unfair. Then there is some kind of giraffe enemy that occasionally charges from the bottom of the screen, if you are moving down at the same time, there is no ****** way to react to it (if you playing arcade mode, that can be a little annoying). That being said, the core gameplay is still very enjoyable, I like how you can destroy parts of the planet which prevents ground enemies from walking around. The game has 3 different modes, including a classic mode, arcade, and adventure - I like 2 of the 3. Classic mode so far is my favorite, just choose a planet, beat the boss, and move to the next planet, with some upgrades along the way. It even has a pool of planets from which your classic mode is generated, each seemingly ending with a unique boss fight. I don't particularly like the arcade mode here for various reasons, but mostly because it goes from 0 to 100 in about 2 minutes, not having a nice difficulty curve or any specials features to make it interesting. Considering that game has some power-ups and RNG, more of that should have been implemented into arcade mode which is bare-bones compared to the other 2. The adventure mode is similar to classic, but with more freedom and flexibility, I guess it's a bit more forgiving. You can do limited exploration by choosing the order of the levels and advancing after completing each planet (kinda similar to the story mode in 'Hell is other Demons'). Taking into account all of the things that you can do and unlock, you are probably looking at several hours of new content.
Pros:
+ good game settings & can remap controls + unique gameplay & interesting mechanics + different modes, plenty of content + awesome soundtrack + achievements & some unlocks
Cons:
- some enemies lack attack indication, and don't give you a reasonable window to respond - I think arcade mode needs to be more gradual, could use more features Overall Thoughts: 8/10 In general, the game is very good and clearly had a lot of polish, but I just don't like how the enemies behave here. Perhaps a compromise would be to reduce enemy speed on lower difficulty settings (further if it already does that), and some of the enemies are still lacking visual indications before attacks. Looking forward to playing more of classic and adventure mode, the arcade mode, not so much, at least not in the current state. Cautiously recommend but only if you're a hardcore fan of arcade pixel games. My playtime is due to having left the game idle - actual time played ~5hrs and it was okay. Pros - Unique reinvention of oldschool Qix mechanic and a good microgame in its own right - lots of inventive enemy designs and some fresh twists. Slick retro style. Awesome dark theme and some nice angsty chiptunes. 3 game modes with some minor unlockables, though imo I only recommend Adventure Mode (somewhat hidden beneath the other two) and mostly enjoyed it. There's a lot to love about the core mechanic once you get the right combination of powerups so as to make the game speed up a bit and flow well. Cons - With the 'default' ship and no upgrades, the flow doesn't escalate well and most stages finish in an anticlimactic 'mop up' of the last straggling enemy which turns a fun activity into a slow drag. Some frustrating readability issues arise from the visual busy-ness + intricate dodging mechanics - the fact that your friendly 'void balls' and enemy bullets both flash similarly, cluster around the player at crucial freezeframe moments, then spray in similar patterns making them difficult to tell apart- it's deadly confusing frustrated the hell out of me, more often than not this is what killed me and it felt unfair. This, and the final boss is a tree with a huge canopy you can't see through till you pass beneath it - I died several times instantaneously coz I collided with a bullet or enemy which was revealed a fraction of a second earlier. Also, had a sound bug which sorta ruined the beautiful atmosphere of the post-game cinematic. Verdict: Not bad, the 3 game modes seem a bit odd since having tried them all I recommend not the default but the 3rd 'Adventure' one. Massive kudos for the passion which obviously went into this game - worth a go if you love retro-pixel games with inventive mechanics.

I forget the game that this reminds me of, but it's a very neat arcade version of this old school game. You are a tiny ship trying to create a "tail" of void-balls to encircle and then destroy all the enemies on the map. Rinse and repeat for a few different maps and many different enemies. Overall worth the price and very fun. Full disclosure there are a few run-ending bugs that I've run into but the dev already seems quite responsive and has been fixing them quickly Edit: Played through several runs since this review and no bugs encountered!
The game looks great and the concept is definitely interesting. But some combination of the core mechanics and enemy design just leads to extremely tedious and frustrating gameplay. Would not recommend.
Great arcade puzzle shooter that deserves a lot more attention!
