This is one of the worst scams that I remember, along with Pregnancy. At least this has cute art. While taking photos of the aurora borealis, you're kidnapped by an Icelandic elf. The game promised before release to talk about Iceland. Probably the writer knows nothing about Iceland, or elves, for that matter. Why my elf behaves like a Japanese waifu? Why would you write about an elf girl if you want to do a generic, trope-ridden story? The elf tells you a sob story of how she was bullied for being different, and bam, the game is over. You won't have time to curse the insipid writing. You will be ejected to the main screen in no time. This isn't even a bad experience. This isn't even an experience. It's over as fast as a car crashing against a wall at 150 mph. Purin, I change my mind. I'm not amused. Even if it sells for next to nothing, that's because the game offers nothing. For 3-4 euros you can get some good deals, on key pages, dealers and even Steam, to grab a game way, way better than this fail.
I backed the kickstarter for this VN a little over one year ago. Pros: + Many beautiful CGs + Great music to fit the mood + Heartwarming story Cons: - I would have liked to see this story be in the second-person narrative rather than the reader assuming the role of a named protagonist. - Chris's background and his purpose for visiting Iceland are not really explained until the end. An earlier demo gave his back-story right at the beginning and I would have preferred that part to be carried over to the final product. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Stuff that I'm sure will be fixed by the time this VN leaves Early Access: - Music transitions are very abrupt. They should fade out instead. - Some word misspellings and dialogue errors (i.e. one particular character has a name before they are formally introduced.) -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- This VN is rather short, but the price is appropriately small. The cons are fairly minor, so overall I'd recommend it.
As much as I appreciate the effort that probably went into this novel (especially on the art front), I can't bring myself to recommend it. The art is pretty (although it can be off-putting if you're not into the overly-anime style; also,
although the MC says Gryla has remarkably pointy elf ears, her ears are average and human-looking, both in sprites and in CGs
), the GUI and backgrounds are beautiful, and it certainly has a nice amount of CGs in comparison to its length, but it doesn't have many redeeming qualities besides those. The premise could have been interesting, but it is not explored to its full potential and some actions taken by the characters seem random or unnatural due to how rushed the whole thing is. The story is also too short to properly get into or to allow you to be truly involved with the characters. Despite the "Extras" option on the main menu, it is not really available and you can't view a CG Gallery or anything of the sort. Lastly, the end doesn't make much sense, and given what the story provides you with, you're not really sure whether there is an unspoken explanation for it or just a gaping plot hole. Considering the existence of free VNs out there that last up to 10 hours and have more captivating characters and complex storylines, I sadly cannot recommend this one.
A short kinetic VN. The art style is really beautiful, and the BGM is quite good too. I loved the fact that the story takes place in Iceland, a colleague of mine went there once and said that it was an amazing country. I really wanted this VN to be a bit longer, just when I started to get more into the story, it was over. Hopefully, the upcoming side story will explain more about Gryla. 6/10.
Pros: - Nice, pretty artwork Cons: - Extremely simplistic writing - Simple story - Lack of character development - Confusing ending I can't say I recommend it. It's a pretty game, but so very empty and shallow.
2.6 Hours and i have exhausted the content. The story is okay and the musical score is nice. Its just quite short.
Vision of Aurora Borealis is a bad kinetic visual novel experience that managed to hit all the wrong notes. Besides the art, nothing about this visual novel worked for me. Even then the art was uneven. The writing was poorly edited and the story feels rushed and poorly paced. THE BEST WAY TO DESCRIBE VISION OF AURORA BOREALIS IS SLAPDASH. Vision of Aurora Borealis is a kinetic experience. I really wish it wasn’t because the writing makes the protagonist come off as an jerk. I really wish I was able to play this and make some choices. Better choices. The story reads as if someone was playing through a visual novel making all of the wrong choices. It sucks and it’s frustrating to read. Check out my full review of this mess on my website where I take this mess apart: http://nardio.net/2016/09/30/vision-aurora-borealis-review/ tl;dr 20 minutes of bad visual novel here... Not worth your time or money.
