About
VIDEO CHAPEL is a collaborative project by Jonathan Turner and Marsia Alexander-Clarke exploring the possibilities of experiencing art in virtual space. Within these seemingly peaceful chambers users will find a selection of works by Alexander-Clarke amid a continuously expanding and compressing audiovisual architecture. Shifting the venue to virtual space gives us an opportunity to experience the works with new interpretations, freedoms, and constraints.

DISCLAIMER
VIDEO CHAPEL is not a traditional video game.
We hope you receive it as an art experience—like going to a gallery installation or museum—but with the unique immersive possibilities of virtual space.
GAMEPLAY
The majority of the gameplay involves exploration and light spatial puzzling.
Total Playtime is around 3 hours but you could potentially speedrun everything in 1 hour.
There are no intentional horror elements or jump scares but some areas feature overwhelming darkness and isolation that may be unsettling to some.
Sound is a critical part of the experience and headphones are highly recommended to appreciate the full effect of the dynamic binaural mix.
Multiplayer is implemented and is encouraged so users can share their experience together. **Unfortunately it is currently only supported on PC. I hope to bring multiplayer support to the Mac version in the future.
VR is implemented for PC but requires a powerful system. On a i7-8700k/2080ti I can have a great experience but it is still sub-90fps performance.
Experienced on the Meta Quest 3
You can view my VR gameplay & impressions here: https://youtu.be/Aroxc4dl4ZY I think this is good experimental art experience at its core. I loved the visuals. I liked the art motif and aesthetics. I like how these look like PCVR graphics. I like the artistic vision. It's trippy and unique. Unfortunately, there are two big negatives about this experience that i must mention. One, the controls are awful in VR. They were so bad I was considering just using the optional teleportation method instead. The free locomotion movement is by either left or right motion controller, but the turning method is also on either controller. This leads to the controls being inconsistent. You'll press forward or sideways to turn and nothing will happen. You will need to be patient and push on your joystick several times to get it to function. The other big negative is the optimization or lack thereof. This app is running on the Unreal Engine 5.7. On my RTX 5090, I was getting variable frame rates, anywhere from 30 to 90 fps. It was usually at around 70-80 fps though. So not the worst, but not good considering it should be a steady 90 fps on an RTX 5090, especially when the graphics were at default and not at maximum (some options were changed to improve performance but still nowhere near where it should have been). Other than those two big negatives though, I enjoyed the art installation. Whole thing took me a little less than an hour (extra time is just making sure there was nothing I missed). For the budget price, I think that's okay. Rate 6.5/10. If locomotion controls were improved, plus better optimization then would score an 8/10.
I bought this game! Einfach mal was Neues ausprobieren. Schaut gern selbst rein. VIDEO CHAPEL follows in footsteps of ENDLESS BECOMING - APARTMENT and goes beyond it. It's like liminal space art gallery walking sim to put it bluntly. Loved exploring it. Beautiful experience.
Very well made art exhibition. It felt like walking through a giant art complex, almost like a museum, but dedicated to one artist's work and vision. Unlike an art museum, though, there are places to unlock, pools to wade through, and secrets to uncover due to the system of focus point achievements. Also, you get to understand more of the artist's philosophy as you see and experience their motifs in the VR environment and gameplay. There was enough of traditional game elements (exploration, unlocks, collecting) that I did wish there was some sort of ending, although having an ultimate unlock was cool (but reused an earlier exhibit?). I'd say if you find poolroom and backroom type games meditative, and have enjoyed an art museum or two, then you would appreciate this piece as well. It would be nice to see more exhibits like this.
Thank you Jonathan Turner for the key to this absolutely beautiful game. Having played ENDLESS BECOMING - APARTMENT to VIDEO CHAPEL I will say the spaces feel liminal to a degree. Each room feels special in its own way in telling its own story. The soundtrack/chore was a beautiful touch on top of exploring with these gorgeous visuals. It may be a walking sim but if you enjoy calming spaces where you could just sit for hours thinking and relaxing this game won't disappoint. I had all graphical settings maxed and had zero issues with performance. Good job on this Jonathan and i look forward to your masterpiece keep up the good work.
Bestimmte Räume muss man erst „freischalten“, was mir gut gefallen hat.
A really beautiful experience, but the ambient music gets distorted and even if I lower the volume level in the settings, nothing changes. I'm absolutely certain that my hardware, software, and sound system have nothing to do with it. In the game settings, if I lower the master volume slider, nothing happens, it stays the same.
VR – No. Desktop – Yes. The VR performance is very poor, with constant FPS drops. The VR controls have issues as well. Continuous turning with the right stick only works about half the time, and sometimes it stops working altogether even though the stick is pushed all the way to the side. It's a real shame because the game looks great in VR and provides a much more immersive experience. Despite these issues, I'm still giving it a positive review because the rest of the experience was pretty good overall. After switching to desktop mode, I didn't encounter any problems. I just hope the VR issues get fixed at some point.
The environments are interesting but unfortunately the performance in VR is terrible.
