Updating since I finally had some assistance and was able to sort out where the issue came from. Turned out the runes that showed the proper order were too small for me to notice, while using my handheld. It wasnt until I was told where to look aand then tried again on my computer. Now that I can actually finish the game I can look back at it much more fondly. Yes there were a few issues but overall I dont find as many fun games with this setting so Im glad to have another added to the list. Hopefully a proper guide can get put up to help people avoid similar hang ups like i faced.
Vessels of Decay, developed by Simon Jakobsson together with Aurora Punks and published by Headup, is a striking attempt to merge retro-styled action-adventure design with a distinctly Scandinavian take on post-apocalyptic storytelling. Rather than presenting a generic ruined world, the game frames its setting through regional folklore and cultural identity, placing players in a landscape where the remnants of modern civilization are slowly being overtaken by nature and something far older and more mysterious. The journey follows siblings Freja and Mud as they move through this decaying world, uncovering fragments of the past while confronting creatures that feel rooted in myth rather than science fiction. From a gameplay standpoint, the experience leans into a top-down action-adventure structure that mixes exploration, combat, and occasional puzzle elements. Movement through the world is punctuated by combat encounters that often unfold in contained spaces, forcing players to engage directly with enemies before progressing. These battles emphasize timing and positioning, with mechanics such as stagger effects and finishing moves adding a cinematic touch to encounters. Boss fights, in particular, act as highlights, presenting multi-phase challenges that require observation and adaptation rather than simple repetition. The overall loop is familiar but effective, creating a steady rhythm between quiet exploration and bursts of action. Where the game leaves a strong impression is in its visual and atmospheric design. The pixel art is detailed and carefully constructed, combining muted tones with striking contrasts to convey a sense of melancholy and unease. Environments feel lived-in despite their abandonment, with overgrown structures and fragmented remnants of human life blending seamlessly with the supernatural elements that now dominate the world. The Scandinavian influence is not just aesthetic—it shapes the creatures, the landscapes, and the tone of the experience, giving the game a unique identity that sets it apart from more conventional post-apocalyptic titles. Despite these strengths, the execution of its mechanics can be uneven. Controls occasionally lack the precision needed for a game that relies on timing and responsiveness, which becomes particularly noticeable during more demanding combat or platforming sections. Moments that should feel tense and rewarding can instead become frustrating when inputs don’t translate as cleanly as expected. Combat, while visually engaging, sometimes struggles with consistency, which can reduce the impact of encounters that are otherwise well-designed on paper. The narrative carries an intriguing premise but doesn’t always capitalize on it fully. There are clear hints of deeper themes involving loss, transformation, and the coexistence of past and present, yet the storytelling often remains understated. While this minimalism can enhance the atmosphere, it also means that character development and emotional stakes don’t always reach their full potential. The result is a story that complements the world effectively but doesn’t quite stand on its own as a compelling driving force. Another factor that shapes the experience is its level of polish. While the core ideas are strong, technical roughness can occasionally break immersion, reminding players that the game’s ambitions may have stretched beyond what its resources could fully support. These issues don’t completely undermine the experience, but they do prevent it from achieving the level of refinement needed to match its artistic vision. In the end, Vessels of Decay is a game defined by its atmosphere and identity. It offers a memorable world, a distinctive artistic style, and a concept that feels refreshingly different within the genre. At the same time, its inconsistencies in gameplay and limited narrative depth hold it back from reaching its full potential. It’s a title that will likely resonate most with players who value mood, setting, and artistic direction over mechanical precision, offering a journey that is as intriguing as it is imperfect.
