Reviews
I want to describe my feelings about the game in detail and without any toxicity, I will attach the English version of the review below. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- [ENG] To be honest, the game looked and was described as something much better than it turned out to be. As I understand it, this is the developers’ first game, which is probably why I’m willing to forgive it a lot — but it’s genuinely difficult for me to rate it positively overall. Some people criticize the graphics or the occasional simplicity of the environments, but for me that’s not the problem at all. The artistic style is interesting and unique, sometimes even charming. The locations are atmospheric, the sound design is excellent, and the voice acting is genuinely impressive — especially for certain NPCs. However, in some areas the game isn’t just poorly made — it’s outright frustrating to the point where I unconsciously slapped my own forehead when yet another enemy phased out of a wall and killed me... and that’s not an exaggeration. I really did facepalm without realizing it. Time and again, enemies would fly out of walls, decorations, and terrain for no apparent reason. You’re in a ruined city full of buildings, fighting a huge flying monster that zooms around the arena like a spinning top? Expect it to phase straight into you out of nowhere. Trying to take cover from a charging monster behind a wall? It will simply smash through it, you’ll clip its model, take extra damage, and congratulations — you’re dead. A flying beetle enemy that shoots at you and then dives in to knock you off a cliff? Don’t worry, it will fly straight through columns, trees, and decorations to reach you. At least the projectiles have collision... Honestly, this is my biggest issue with the game. I got so tired of these problems that even though I originally planned to play it twice, now I’m not sure I will. I’ll probably just finish it once to close the gestalt. I’m disappointed — I truly hoped the game would at least function properly. Not to mention the rather boring combat, the questionable boss mechanics, and the simply awful implementation of traps. That said, I really want to see the developers grow and improve with their future projects.
This game is just okay - not great, not bad. The style and level design are awesome, no complaints at all. The problem is the gameplay - too much grinding and killing the same enemies again and again. For what? Grinding just to lift a heavy weapon. Sounds annoying. It feels very boring after a while. The game also needs polishing though it is not early-access. Hitboxes and attacks are clunky and enemies can deal damage even through walls. Somehow I got pulled into playing for 3 hours straight because the atmosphere is super immersive. But I don't know if I'll keep playing. It's kind of boring, to be honest.
good
I liked it
Verho is best described as an uncut gem. It has a fair few flaws and rough edges but is really a fantastic experience at its core. I'm going to go into the good, the okay/neutral, and the bad but it's important to note that the majority is good but it's not realistic to go into as much detail on all of that as with what isn't good. So the good... a wide variety of genuinely interesting and fun weapons and spells, solid combat for this kind of game (combat doesn't tend to be their greatest strength imo), most of the areas are well designed and reward exploration, the world and lore are interesting, the visuals are great and the masks make for a very unique style, on and on. I'm listing these out in brief (and it isn't exhaustive) but I don't want to understate that this game is overall very good. The okay and neutral are things I think could go either way for a person, are a mixed bag, I was unimpressed with, etc. First off the voice acting is definitely a mixed bag ranging from excellent to amateur. None of it is so bad as to be a true issue but quality does vary a lot. Second, the boss fights. There are a lot of them for this kind of game and the quality varies a fair bit. I don't consider bosses to really be a selling point for games like this and do think the game would largely be improved if it had about half as many bosses and minibosses. That said, none of them left me frustrated or felt unfair so it's whatever. Third, general enemy design. With a few exceptions I will cover later, enemy design ranges from decent to mildly annoying. There are also a fair few reskins with minor mechanical changes later in the game but I can forgive that given the budget and time constraints they were under (not like we don't see larger devs do even worse in this regard). Overall a mixed bag for sure. Fourth, some of the secrets/puzzles. To be blunt, there are a couple that are the sort of thing you need a community effort or dumb luck to figure out and any normal person will need a guide. This doesn't bother me as the rewards aren't especially important and the whole thing falls into easter egg status for me. But I know it may bother some. Fifth and final, the story and characters. The story (not the world/lore mind you which is solid) is pretty average. Not terrible, not great. The characters are actually more interesting on average and I genuinely like a few a lot but I do think this is a case of your mileage may vary. I could easily see other people finding certain characters annoying or excessively tropey. The bad... oh boy there aren't many bad things but the ones that there are were properly awful for me. First of all, a handful of enemies are frankly inexcusably awful designs. I will avoid spoiler details but suffice to say there are enemies that can clip through terrain/objects to get to you and do so very aggressively for their most dangerous attacks. I cannot emphasize enough how frustrating and unfun this is. It ruined at least one otherwise very well made zone for me. A game like this really wants to reward creative use of the environment, even if it makes certain enemies far easier, and these enemies actively punish you for trying to do that. Second, the final area of the game is honestly awful. It's confusing to navigate but not in a "figuring out the trick/path" way but more "everything looks the same and connects in ways that are not at all intuitive." It's also kinda crap to look at. The four final areas share a general style but of the four, this one was the one I hated to look at. In defense of the devs, my understanding is these last areas were made under a ton of time/budget pressure so I can personally forgive it but I'm not going to lie about my experience. And... that's about it for what I would call truly bad. I can nitpick things sure but these were the only two things that seriously dragged my experience down. I encountered a few bugs here and there, mostly involving getting clipped through the map or into a wall, but they were few and far between. No crashes, performance was fine but a bit worse in endgame areas (played on Steam Deck using latest Proton GE release). The tl;dr here is an overall good but definitely not perfect game that I can comfortably recommend to people who are into the retro "King's Field like" subgenre that is steadily growing. It wears its inspirations on its sleeve and generally does them justice. I prefer Lunacid as an overall experience but that's not a mark against it as Lunacid is a top 10 game for me.
I love the atmosphere. The game was made with love, and care.
genuinely one of the best games I have ever played. Really glad I played this and gave it the time. Im thinking of getting all the achievements at this point.
