Yet despite all of its flaws, there is still something strangely compelling buried underneath the chaos. Beneath the bugs and awkward systems lies an ambitious pirate RPG trying very hard to deliver a darker and more grounded version of the pirate fantasy. The game rarely reaches its full potential, but there are enough interesting ideas and atmospheric moments hidden inside the mess to make it more memorable than many completely forgettable open-world games. The story centers around Christopher Raven, a pirate captain consumed by revenge after witnessing the brutal murder of his family during childhood. Having lost his hand during the attack, Christopher grows into a violent and emotionally broken man obsessed with hunting down those responsible. Unlike more romanticized pirate adventures focused on treasure hunting and lighthearted swashbuckling, Vendetta leans heavily into themes of brutality, trauma, betrayal, and moral decay. The world itself reflects that darker tone, presenting the Caribbean as a dangerous and miserable place filled with corruption, violence, and desperation rather than heroic adventure. One of the strongest aspects of the game is its atmosphere. Sailing across stormy seas, approaching isolated ports, and wandering through grim pirate settlements occasionally creates the exact kind of gritty pirate experience the developers clearly wanted to achieve. Certain towns and environments have a surprisingly strong sense of identity despite the game’s rough technical condition. Unfortunately, the game’s flaws are impossible to overlook. The melee combat system is one of the weakest aspects of the entire experience. Sword fights feel stiff, repetitive, and awkward, lacking the fluidity and impact necessary to make close combat satisfying. Enemy AI behaves inconsistently, animations look clumsy, and many encounters devolve into repetitive button mashing rather than skillful duels. Because melee combat occurs so frequently throughout the campaign, these problems quickly become exhausting during longer play sessions. Technical issues remain another major problem even after the rerelease and various patches. Bugs, animation glitches, broken quest triggers, physics problems, and occasional crashes still appear regularly enough to damage immersion. Certain missions behave unpredictably, and some mechanics feel unfinished or poorly tested. The troubled development history of the game is obvious almost immediately because so many systems feel rough around the edges. While the revised version improved stability compared to the original release, the game never fully escaped the feeling of being an incomplete project struggling to hold itself together. The writing is also highly inconsistent. The game attempts to create a mature and gritty tone through vulgar dialogue, violence, and cynical humor, but the execution often feels forced or awkward. Some conversations and character interactions come across as unnecessarily edgy rather than emotionally effective. While the darker tone does help distinguish the game from more traditional pirate adventures, the writing occasionally undermines itself through exaggerated dialogue and uneven character development. Pacing becomes another issue throughout the campaign. Certain moments involving exploration or naval battles are genuinely engaging, but these sections are often interrupted by repetitive combat encounters, awkward mission design, or excessive backtracking. The open world sometimes feels strangely empty despite its large scale, and several mechanics lack enough depth to justify the amount of time players spend interacting with them. Despite all these problems, Vendetta: Curse of Raven’s Cry remains oddly fascinating because of how ambitious and atmospheric it can occasionally be. It is clearly an unfinished and deeply flawed game, but it is also one of the few pirate RPGs willing to fully embrace a dark and grounded interpretation of piracy rather than focusing entirely on exaggerated fantasy. There are moments where the atmosphere, naval combat, and world design briefly come together in ways that reveal glimpses of the much stronger game this could have become. For players who enjoy pirate settings and can tolerate technical roughness, outdated mechanics, and inconsistent quality, the game may still provide some entertainment as a flawed but ambitious curiosity. As far as presentation of a pirate game goes this one is 10/10 and even better than Black flag. Sadly the land and naval combat is horrible. I cannot tolerate it anymore.

This game had a lot of potential, and I like the fact that it attempts to take a look at the darker side of piracy in the Caribbean. There's no fantasy theme like with Skull & Bones, and there's no lighthearted tone like any sort of Pirates of the Caribbean game or Sid Meier's Pirates. That being said, this game isn't perfect at all. The voice acting is kind of dry and both the land combat and ship combat leave much to be desired, though I honestly couldn't even say that for sure given how many bugs and crashing issues the game suffers from. In order to be even remotely playable, it requires quite a bit of tweaking on the users' end, and even so once you reach a certain point in the storyline or venture into certain environments there just comes a point where both soft and hard crashes are encountered every 30 seconds to 1 minute essentially rendering this title unplayable. I almost never request refunds from Steam, but in this case it seemed like the only logical thing to do when, of the short amount of hours logged on record, approximately one half of that time is spent fiddling with the in-game settings, enabling and disabling various Windows settings, and poring through crash logs. I got the deluxe edition of this game during the recent sale for a little over $8 and it simply isn't worth it. Seeing that the full price for the deluxe edition is $34.99 is appalling and, quite frankly, laughable. Whether $8 or $34.99 save your money because, again, it simply is not worth it.
