I have five things to point out in this game: Talking to NPCs feels like they have ADHD and can't stay still. I love it, even if the animation cycle is the same for every NPC.
-
Not being able to fast travel across the map as a vampire is derogatory.
-
Following the peaceful route is definitely more challenging, as there's no other way to level-up quickly. Embracing (choosing this wording, witty people these devs are) one person gives far more XP than doing multiple quests.
-
There are some shortcuts in town, without mobs. These are probably designed to make access easier and faster. However, it feels like the devs cheated their way to divert eyes from the hardship of the peaceful route. This -in my opinion- alone breaks engagement. Although, I might be nitpicking.
-
Even though I mostly wrote the unfavourable things, it's hard to find a genuinely good game involving vampires. Especially, one with a meticulously written narrative. Therefore, having given my warnings, I can adequately recommend this game.

Combat is just very annoying, choosing to be a good guy sort of makes talking to people pointless.
I am sure it is a great game, but it just didnt hook me enough to keep playing. I really like the setting and theme, but these type of combat games are not for me unfortunately. Still thumbs up, because just because I personally dont feel enganged with the combat system, it does not mean it is a bad game at all. I just wish it would be easier for me and I would be a little more patient to learn how to properly play the game and enjoy the story. Only heard good things about it! :)
Recommended? Yes (with caveats). The Good: Amazing story and atmosphere. Great moral choices feeding/killing NPCs actually matters. Loved the rich writing and voice acting. The Bad: Performance is rough. Averaging ~30 FPS on my i5-13th gen + RTX 3050. Combat feels sluggish. Buggy. NPCs glitch out, quest markers break sometimes. Verdict: Flawed masterpiece. If you love story driven RPGs, buy it on sale and save often. Just don't expect smooth performance. 7/10
One of the best Gothic games out there.
The world of Vampyr is gritty, dark, and unforgiving. It is a world in which the game tests your moral character on every decision, and where sometimes you won't be able to predict the outcomes. As the developers state: "Take responsibility for your actions." That's the core of the game. Absolutely would recommend for all the fans of dark-verse fiction out there.
In theory, I should love this game. It ticks many of my specific interest boxes by featuring a post-WWI doctor-turned-vampire who works the night shift and tries to balance his humanity and ethical oath with his new monstrous hunger. It's story-focused with narrative choices and consequences and features an interesting take on an epidemic (the Spanish flu). I have tried, however, multiple times to play this game, but I always end up losing interest and putting it down. After finally finishing Chapter 2 (the game is divided into a prologue that serves as a tutorial, 6 story chapters, and a seventh chapter that acts as an epilogue), I can conclude that this game is unfortunately not one I would recommend due to the extremely stiff voice acting and boring dialogue. Much of the game involves the main character, Jonathan Reid, questioning people to gather information about various quests/sidequests in the city, as well as trying to understand what has happened to him. Most of these interrogation sessions tend to go something like this: Jonathan: "I AM DR. JONATHAN REID. CAN YOU TELL ME WHAT YOU KNOW ABOUT THIS PLACE?" NPC: "Well, I was born down the street here. My neighbor is a bit of a jerk. I really like the fish and chips restaurant, though. My mother used to work there." Jonathan: "TELL ME ABOUT THE FISH AND CHIPS RESTAURANT." NPC: "The fish is very fresh and delicious. They get it from the harbor every day." Jonathan: "TELL ME MORE ABOUT THE HARBOR." NPC: "The harbor? Most of us work down there, including my neighbor, who is a bit of a jerk. Never says hello to anyone, and there are rumors that he's into some nasty business." Jonathan: "WHY IS YOUR NEIGHBOR SO UNPLEASANT?" Obviously, this is not a real conversation from the game and is slightly exaggerated, but this is the feeling I got from most of the dialogue. At one point, I tried to read the subtitles and skip through the voice acting, but the game does not skip line by line. It instead skips everything the NPC has to say until Jonathan resumes his questioning, leaving the player to miss vital information about clues and the plot. As the game also has lackluster combat, I found there was very little to hold my interest after completing Chapter 2. I really wanted to love Vampyr, but I unfortunately ultimately do not recommend it. If you are someone who shares my specific interests, I would recommend Cabernet, which also features a doctor-turned-vampire, albeit in late 19th-century Eastern Europe, and is more of a Telltale-esque game than this one.
