Unsolved Mystery Club 2: Ancient Astronauts (IHOG) 2012 review updated after playing Steam version in 2019 Steam key provided for Curator review This one was a personal favorite back when it came out. So how does it hold up 7 years later? Read on to find out~! Options include sliders for Music and Sound, Custom Cursor, Widescreen, Full-screen or Windowed. Choice of Casual or Expert mode, the only difference being how long it takes the hint and skip buttons to charge. Story: "This game is a fictional dramatization based on a true story and real events." Five members of the Unsolved Mystery Club organization have gone missing in different parts of the world whilst researching theories about ancient astronauts, and you have been tasked with finding them. The game starts out at the UMC headquarters, but it's not long before you're off on your first journey. Our Journal is a communication device that we use to keep in contact with UMC. Here you can see brief overviews of the clues you've found in each part of the world, as well as the ability to replay cutscenes. Be sure to read any articles you find before closing them, as you won't get to see them at a readable size from the device. Gameplay: There is no MAP, but each part of the world we visit has a limited number of locations, so it never feels like we're doing too much backtracking. Be on the lookout for usable items. Sure, we're always looking for something we can use, but to me a lot of these items seemed such a natural part of the landscape that I had trouble spotting them. lol~ In other words, you'll find helpful items in places other than HO scenes. During the adventure portion of the game, we have tiered hint system. When you click on the HELP button, you'll get a list of objectives you can get assistance with. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1798800130 Some of the answers are tiered, and you'll have to wait for the help button to recharge before you can ask another question. The Hidden Object Scenes are very lightly interactive, and all are the standard find-by-list type. HINTS are available during the HOS, but both hints and skips take a long time to charge regardless of which game mode you've chosen. You will get multiple items from each completed scene. The misclick penalty engages when you make five wrong clicks in a row. Sights and Sounds: During the course of our adventure, we'll visit Africa, Egypt, Mexico, Peru and Antarctica, each with its own kind of beauty. The graphics, by today's standards, are nice, but at the time of release they were really something special. Each time there was dialogue I had to turn the sound WAY up in order to hear what was being said, so a separate slider for voices would have been much-appreciated. Still, the voice acting is good and the music is fitting. The greatest strength of Ancient Astronauts is the design of the HOS. They're beautiful and challenging, and the theming to them is very well done. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1801686432 CE Content:

Integrated Strategy Guide (look for it at the top right of the retractable toolbar)
Bonus Chapter
12 Concept Art (Locations)
12 Character Concept Art
6 Music Tracks (cannot be saved)
Bonus Chapter: The extra chapter takes us to the Andes in Tiwanku, Bolivia to see if we can find a UMC member's missing father. There is a matching puzzle that we'll have to do in three separate places, each harder than the last due to the quantity of items to match and the fact that they move if you don't find the identical piece. This chapter doesn't really add anything to the story, but it does address something that was mentioned in one of the UMC's bios (the missing father). Once you finish the bonus, you can go back into the game to review character bios or to re-watch cutscenes from your communication device. Verdict: Although this was not the amazing experience that I remember from way back when, it's still a good game. This is a nicely-balanced IHOG with challenging but beautifully-designed HOS. Recommended for lovers of the genre!
Despite some nice aspects of this game, it's just too clunky and uneven to recommend. The game engine is just bad: it requires precision clicking, the animations are annoying, and it generally feels very unpolished. The story concept seems exciting and the story does start strong, but it devolves quickly into a ridiculous mish-mash of "ancient alien" gimmicks with nothing to tie them together. There is no resolution to the story, and really no apparent point to any of it. The only good thing about this game is that sometimes the point-and-click adventure puzzles are quite challenging, and the hidden-object scenes are pretty good. But, also, they are sometimes either plain obtuse or trivial. The puzzle mini-games are just average, and sometimes involve annoying busywork.
Couldn't even get the game properly started. For some reason, the game booted up with a huge black bar on the left and the rest of the game interface was shifted beyond the right and bottom-right side of my display screen, blocking out several crucial buttons in the process, specifically I cannot access the Options (which I'll need to adjust the resolution), Play or even the Exit button (had to alt+F4 out of the game). Tried fixing it (changed the aspect ratio/fullscreen status of the config file) but to no avail. Not sure if this is a Windows 10 thing or a display screen thing (I'm using a standard 16:9 laptop screen, by the way), but you've been warned! If you buy this game, you might want to check to see if your computer/laptop can run it or not. Get a refund asap if not. **Note that I've been able to run really old HOGs, like the 2009 Samantha Swift and the Golden Touch game, on this very same laptop before.

Five UMS explorers have disappeared while investigating ancient civilisations whose citizens may have had contact with extra-terrestrial beings. The explorers were last seen in five different locations and you must follow their tracks for clues as to who abducted them and where they have been imprisoned. Good luck, new UMS explorer! Unsolved Mystery Club: Ancient Astronauts is a casual/hidden objects/ puzzle game developed by Freeze Tag and published by HH-Games in July 2019 on Steam. As you start the game, you’ll have to decide on which level of difficulty you’d like to play. You can choose either Casual or Expert, the difference being that on the Expert level it will take longer for the hint button to regenerate itself and it will take longer for the skip button to become active during puzzles. Next, you’ll be asked to pick up your gear and head up to the mission room. This sequence is basically a quick tutorial. Then, as you arrive at the mission panel, you’ll be given an ancient artefact known as the Black Sun. This artefact has 12 missing gems which you have to recover. Interestingly, each of the five missing explorers was also trying to locate these gems. It is said that when all the gems have been placed into the Black Sun, whoever handles the relic will receive a surge of power. First you’ll travel to Mali, then to Egypt, Mexico, Peru and Antarctica. At the start of each level, you’ll see cut scenes showing what happened to the UMS explorer who was investigating that specific location. Each stage has 10 to 12 different places to explore, in which you will find objects, interact with other characters, and also activate puzzles and hidden objects phases. You’ll go back and forth a few times to open the next place within the stage until you successfully finish the level. Each level might take you around 30 to 40 minutes to complete. There is a strategy guide button (walkthrough) available if you don’t know what to do next. - nice and handy! There is another scenario to unlock, but you must finish the first five to be able to play it. Most of the puzzles are pretty simple, but there are a few that are not so easy and will likely frustrate you. I do like the hidden objects sequences as the items are well-hidden in each of the images. The story is fictional, but based on true events, which is fun! At some point during each level, you’ll unlock a video with a bit of historical background. Graphically the game looks good, and has several soundtracks. One thing that annoyed me during my gameplay was this strange sound that popped up every so often when I picked up an object. Thankfully, you can mute the sound effect if you wish to. If you have a wide monitor like me, you might have an issue with the resolution above 1920 X 1080 and will probably end up playing the game in the windowed mode. Saying that, I can play the game on a full screen on my laptop as long as I stay at 1920 X 1080. Positives: ~~~~~~~ + Nice graphics + 5 + a bonus level to complete + Enjoyable story + Fun to play for all ages + Some historical facts Negatives: ~~~~~~~~ - No achievements or trading cards as yet - Resolution issue with my widescreen monitor. Five of your fellow UMC members have disappeared while investigating ancient civilisations who might have contact with extra-terrestrials. Your mission is to track them down and rescue them! 6/10 Key provided by the developer/publisher for review purposes. Any opinions expressed are entirely my own!
https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1988801619
https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1988801877

The game is quite good and it has story, usable items, HO, minigames. Nice voice acting. The level of graphics is rather good and the story feels a little like the Indiana Jones. But as I understand from another comment, although Release date is 2019, it is older game. Is it true? Is it re-designed new release? It is pity that this information is not a part of "about game". One can appreciate the history of the game. This could explain some strange feeling from the game. The flow of game and the moving between screens is stiff, especially the place in central HQ is too much static. It is not something you expect in new modern game. My recomentation is Yes for anybody. But there is some stiff feeling in the mechanics of the game. Pros: Nice story, Original minigames, nice graphics of HO screens, educational info about facts that used Erich von Daniken Cons: HO screens are usually dark, moving between places has some delay
I enjoyed the game until after about 3 hours of play, I was bit by a software bug that would not allow me to continue game. I contacted developer who indicated they could not replicate. They did say, however, same bug was also experienced by buyers of game on Big Fish. Given I played game longer than 2 hours, Steam would not refund my purchase price. Disappointing.
Game bugged almost half way through and wouldn't let me continue. It was off to a bad start from the get go, since I had to change the resolutions setting because otherwise only half of the screen was visible. The game is clunky and has close to no plot. You just stumble around from location to location collecting things. Also, the sound quality of the dialogues is awful. Sounds like it was recorded on an answering machine from the 90s. The music is good but it's twenty second clips that loop and loop over and over again. I got this game on a Hidden Object bundle. Since I didn't spend much on it I was going to be lenient on my judgment and give it a good review, although it looked to be a (and positively turned out to be) very basic, boring game. However, having a bug that breaks the game like that is unacceptable. The game doesn't have any achievements, so I was playing it just to relax and pass the time. I have no interest in nor incentive for re-starting the entire game. I was three hours into it, I already got a feel of the game and I can see the ending being meh at best. The glitch has been pointed out before on the discussions and on the reviews, almost a year ago, yet there doesn't seem to be any fix coming. I guess it makes sense this game is thrown into a bundle. Otherwise no one would buy it.
