Please follow United Critics for quality reviews
Unnamed Experiment Review

Great idea, terrible execution

The concept of a puzzle game with no textual guidance is really interesting. Unfortunately, the implementation of this concept is complex and Unnamed Experiment falls short… keep reading to find out why!
About This Game

Storyline
The game has no text, no voice, no context, and no story. After figuring out the menu´s puzzle, you find yourself in a room with two different environments (living room and toilet). From there, you progress through micro puzzles to the end of a very crazy environment. The ending that was supposed to be a surprise ranged from non-sensical to pretty obvious.
Gameplay Mechanics
It’s a click puzzle game. Allegedly, there was supposed to be some logic behind the puzzles, but the logic is basically non-existent, and it ends up being a click everything till it progresses kind of experience. There are many cryptic signs, but their relationship is poorly designed. The combination of possibilities falls into the hundreds of thousands to the millions. What’s more, the puzzles and signs are not interconnected in the order you find them. To give an example: At the beginning, you will find a series with dozens of a kind of a cryptic symbol. These cryptic symbols match the symbols in one of the first puzzles. However, there is zero relationship between them. You will use these symbols in a later game puzzle, and that same puzzle will help you progress in the first area’s puzzle. Meanwhile, you may have wasted many hours trying to figure out how those symbols in the first area relate to the first area´s puzzle, since they are the only two instances using the same kind of cryptic symbols in early/mid game. This example perfectly describes the game design mess that is Unnamed Experiment. Since I assumed it might be an issue with my puzzle solving experience, I resorted to people who had previously finished the game and engaged with them on online forums. Even though they finished the game, their feedback was exactly the same: there is no logic, just click through it. They progressed by clicking thousands of times and getting lucky. Going back to my experience, I had already started the game and solved a few puzzles. Since I wanted to progress, I decided to follow one of the video guides online, continuing from where I was. Even though I followed it step-by-step, it did not work. I assume the puzzle-solving order matters and that I might have encountered a game-breaking bug. But it all seems so nonsensical that I don't even know. All I know is that following those guides did not lead to the same experience. All in all, it’s very confusing and frustrating.
Visuals & Audio
The visuals and audio are exactly as shown in the trailers. It blends well and I liked what I saw. However, there should be some logic behind the progression. The room becomes the vent that becomes a box that becomes the toilet that becomes a stomach that becomes the rom again that becomes a board that becomes space. There is no progression, just a series of screen after screen with no transition and no logic whatsoever.
Pros

• Great idea. • Beautiful art.
Cons

• Poor game design. • No apparent logic behind puzzles. • No chronology. • No transition.
To Be Improved
Unnamed Experiment urgently needs an assistant tool and transition screens. It’s either this assistant tool guide with tips for the player to progress (ranging from easy to hard) or a complete re-design of the game to properly interconnect the puzzles and make it more logical and chronological. The screen transitions need to be properly implemented, at least when the environment is changing. This should give a better sense of the story, but it would still need to have a better way to convey the story to the players without textual guidance.
Conclusion

The idea is superb, but the execution falls short. It feels like thousands of random clicks to progress with no logic whatsoever. The lack of voice and text doesn´t mean the game shouldn´t have a story. There are many ways of telling a story, but this is not one of them. As it stands, the game is both confusing and frustrating. Hopefully, the developers will improve it and bring this brilliant concept to life. Rating: 2.5/10
Adventure game, India, pastime, brainteaser, difficult riddles. It should be an adventure, but there is no plot, dialogue, or characters. We can say that this game supports all languages because it has nothing written, not even in the initial interface. There is no tutorial, we are completely left in the lurch starting from the "MENU" After clicking randomly we are catapulted into a strange world where there is no logic, we find ourselves interacting with objects and creatures that I don't know how to describe because they don't make sense. It has a serious flaw: when we pick up an object and select it to use it it doesn't work, we have to keep trying and trying again up to ten times before succeeding; This thing is really annoying!!!!!! The puzzles: some we find the clues easily, but most there is no explanation of what we have to do, while others we don't understand where to find references to solve them; surely putting a small "Help" button would have been a very useful choice to avoid getting stuck and abandoning the game disconsolately! I don't recommend it because I didn't find it fun. Sometimes I clicked on the puzzles at random to continue, while for others I had to consult the guide because I was totally stuck. Sometimes there are games where the ending surprises you and makes sense of what we did to get there; but this is not the case, unfortunately!!!! Unnamed Experiment is a creepy, surreal puzzle game where you're dropped into a strange world with no instructions. You solve weird, challenging puzzles using only your gut instinct and observation skills. The hand-drawn art and eerie atmosphere make it super immersive. If you love psychological horror and tricky puzzles, this game will keep you hooked and on edge the whole time.
I give this game a rank D (40-50%) Mediocre game - you can totally forget it.. See my profile for more details about my reviews. I am sad to say I can not really recommend this game. I apologise to the dev who graciously offered a copy to me, but I could not even finish the first room. Worse: it took me about 10 minutes to find out what to do IN THE MAIN MENU. I appreciate the witty idea of making the statement "this is a puzzle game, finding out to start the game from the main menu will ALSO be a puzzle!"... but not if everything feels convoluted, obtuse, confusing... to the point of feeling arbitrary and nonsensical. Do you like Escape games? puzzles of unlocking stuff? This is a take on that, here, but just SO complex and random and arbitrary, without giving you ANY CLUE whatsoever, that it ends up being unpleasant and non-rewarding. There is 5 symbols code to enter here, in order to unlock a door. Then you find all the symbols, in 3 lines. You try the 3 lines. Nothing works. It is because something that happens on another screen and which could NEVER be noticed or interpreted as THE clue gives you the right order... Me spending 50 hours on it would NOT make me realise what to do. I doubt this is good puzzle design. Also, I appreciate the quirky/clumsy art, but sometimes it is TOO clumsy, and ends up being confusing. All in all, this little game feels more like what you would find in a game jam, and I believe it could benefit from LOTS of playtesting, streamlining and polishing. I still believe the dev seems to be smart and hopefully his efforts will be used in more enjoyable gaming works in the future. Only get this game if you are a collector of oddities maybe? It is a very clever game that nobody knows how to play it or even start
This game will challenge even the most experienced puzzle fans. When you run the game, you’re welcomed with no instruction, story, or even an intro. There’s just a single screen where you can click on several things and try to figure out what to do. This is actually the game’s main menu, and getting into the proper game is hidden behind this first puzzle. The actual game follows the escape room template. You click on items in the room to use them or take a closer look. There are no highlights, so you must click on everything, including apparently insignificant things. The solution is to observe unusual patterns and then apply them correctly. However, this is a lot more difficult than it sounds. The game throws you immediately into the fire because there are no "obvious" solutions or even simple puzzles to help you get started. Every clue appears to be unrelated to the room or its contents.
Continuo recomendando.
