As someone playing this for the first time years after its release, and without the nostalgia of having played the previous entries in the series, the cinematic tech and mechanics do not carry the same impact today. While certain production elements stand out, the core gameplay loop and specific narrative choices are what stuck out to me as very boring and uninteresting. I played the whole game, which lasted about 40h for me.
The Good
The game engine holds up remarkably well. The music, voice acting, and graphics remain high quality despite the game's age. The HDR and sound are very well made, that usually is the case with recent PC Sony games. The dynamic action sequences where the environment destroys itself around you are well-executed and visually impressive. The driving segments are mechanically solid and enjoyable, though they do suffer from occasional pacing issues and feel overextended at times. The NPC AI is exceptionally strong. Enemies behave intelligently, forcing you to adapt without them simply rushing your position in an unrealistic manner. The pirate history and lore elements are interesting (but very parse, and get boring by chapter 18) and represent the most engaging parts of the narrative.
The Bad
The core loop relies entirely on a predictable pattern: puzzle, exploration, shootout, exploration, shootout, exploration, shootout, exploration, small puzzle, shootout, with little variation. Ammo scarcity is a constant issue, you can’t keep your special guns and they always only have two or six bullets with no way to replenish them. The puzzles lack originality and difficulty. Compared to similar franchises like Tomb Raider, the game feels of course, highly linear which I don’t really mind, I love The Last Of Us, but the problem here is that it’s done with significantly less content. Exploring brings no meaningful rewards : finding hidden relics that have no description or lore value fails to contribute to the story, I stopped looking after a while because there was no story attached to them. The ones that do are easy enough to find (they’re often literally in your way). The protagonist's relationship with his girlfriend is poorly handled, his apologies lack substance, and he frequently takes her for granted.
Conclusion
Ultimately, it’s easy to see why certain elements of this game were praised at launch, but the formula has not aged well. If you lack prior attachment to these characters the repetitive structure and narrative frustrations outweigh the impressive production values.
Spoilers

Honestly, the plot completely loses me because of how annoying the brother is. By the end, I don't give a ♥♥♥♥ about literally STEALING the pirate treasure, and the brother is just an absolute piece of trash. I would have left him to die. The worst part is that after you actually go through all the trouble of saving him, he just runs off anyway for his precious treasure that mommy would be proud for him to find. At that point, it should have been game over, bye, see you never. Caring about his survival is a total waste of time, I get why the character does it, but honestly, I didn’t give a ♥♥♥♥.
bom de maissssss
