Many people recommended me Tunic because I love the Outer Wilds. People that say this don't understand the Outer Wilds and compare it to Tunic just because of mystery and puzzles. To me, they are very different games. That said: The game looks amazing, music is great, the in-game manual really is a work of art. However, the game just tries to be many things at the same time, and doesn't excel at anything in particular. The first part of the game tries to be Zelda, then Dark Souls and finally throws a series of tedious puzzles at you. The combat doesn't feel great, I can only describe it as imprecise and unsatisfying. There's a parry mechanic, but it's useless, because it needs about 2 business days to charge up, longer than most attacks get telegraphed. Secrets are often hidden due to the isometric perspective, which is a gimmick the devs use *ad nauseam*. "Wow, a waterwall! I wonder if there's something secret here!" There are some hidden mechanics. These are not puzzles, as Tunic just tells you outright once you find the right page of the manual. As for the (real) end-game puzzles: They are cool at first, but get real tiring and same-ish later. I can see how people love this game, and I did enjoy the first half of the game. But to me, it just got boring and uninteresting after a while.

This review is especially made for those who like to get all the achievements in games. Minor achievement spoilers ahead. Tunic is an exploration game heavily inspired by Zelda, despite using an isometric view and not a true 3D engine like Ocarina of Time and the following games, but despite thai similarity it also has a few unique concepts and ideas: you play as a small fox that arrives in a foreign world where you can’t read any of the signs and even part of the game’s manual pages are written in that same foreign language. The story is very well written and there are a few surprises and shocking revelations after you start uncovering the world’s history and past events. In the beginning, the game gives you some liberty of choice regarding where to go first because it also doesn’t tell where you need to go in the first place, you have to truly explore the world, find some dead ends that need a particular item to open up, go back and try another area. Along the way you’ll get new weapons and tools to fight monsters and unlock new areas and once in a while face boss monsters that will require some strategy and quick reaction times to dodge and attack at the right time. Still, nothing as hard as Dark Souls, despite the tag in the store. The graphics are truly unique and beautiful, despite the simplicity of the shapes which are often geometric with sharp edges. The lighting and particle effects are also well made for an indie game. The soundtrack is also phenomenal, mixing electronic music and classical instruments, creating melodies that vary from relaxing to eerie depending on your location. The game is simple to learn and the character has the same set of movements that exist in most games: attack, roll, block. Like in Zelda there are items you can use like bombs and potions and the game also has the “lock on enemies” feature. The hardest part of the game is still discovering all the secret paths, chests and collectibles hidden throughout the world, which are nearly impossible to get without the help of a guide and even with it, it will take some time. There is a speed run record of 20 minutes for this game, but I needed 18 hours to collect everything, finishing the game on my own with minimal help, and collecting everything I missed after the ending. Note:
if you decide to face the boss after collecting all the manual pages you will unlock the real ending, which will prevent the final fight, but you can attack the boss to force him to fight you and get the achievement for defeating it.
. Achievements: How many: 36 Achievements. How much time: Around 18 hours, with a guide for the collectibles I missed after winning the run. Game difficulty: Medium, only the boss fights require some trial and error. Achievements’ Difficulty: Hard, collecting everything will be very difficult without a guide, even with the small clues the game gives you. Overall opinion: Tunic is a beautiful and unique Zelda inspired isometric game with true world exploration and minimal help and instructions, with lots of secret paths and hidden treasures to find in this rich world. Very frustrating but also very very rewarding. A feel good game.
Horrible controls and rebinding is to limited. It also affects menu confirm and cancel.
I recommend it for some of the experiences it will give you, but the third act really soured me on it overall. In the first 2/3s this is a truly excellent Zelda game. After that, you don't get to play Zelda anymore. You have to choose whether you want to play Dark Souls or The Witness. If you choose The Witness, there's no more combat for you to enjoy. All of the quantitative progression you've built throughout the game is now meaningless. If you choose Dark Souls, well the boss is right there. Win the fight and the game is over. Both sides of the ending are still pretty well done, but this rug pull just really didn't work for me. Pretty disappointing to see an otherwise great game abandon any attempt to continue balancing the styles of gameplay. Still, recommended for the first 9 hours.
English Version (french below) : It's a very unique game. It's very 2D Zelda inspired, and the art direction is very nice, but I'm honestly not sure whether or not this game was for me or not. I didn't really click with it to be completely honest. Could have been the wrong time honestly, but I do recognize its quality. It's definitely a game you should take your time for, really pause to think about what you know and what you've seen. It's not Outer Wilds, but in the same way, the experience is mostly learning about the game progressively. I just didn't particularly found the gameplay or the environments that engaging and I found the music good but not anything crazy It's a great game, try it out and unlike me, don't rush, take your time with it Version Française : C'est un jeu très unique.
