Love the Tropico series, but this game suffers from the same thing as most older games; you're stuck running it at 1080p bc the ui shrinks to nothingness at higher resolutions, especially beautiful and crispy 4k. Still the best game in the series and looks way better than the blurry mess that is 5!
Tropico 4 has been a game I've come back to for years and years, usually just for one map at thats it but I love it every time. Great music, nice visuals despite its age, fun portrait designs and a good sense of humor. There really isn't a game that has the same vibe as Tropico 4 and out of all the iterations I recommend this one the most. Give it a spin if you're looking for a new City sim/builder to play.

Something about these 2010s city management games hooks me harder than heroin. I played Tropico 4 for 9 hours in my first session, and beat the game on freeplay mode. I will probably do it several more times before I move onto Tropico 5 to do the same thing. Viva El Presidente!
Great Game, was so much fun on the ridiculousness of this city builder, one of my first positive experiences with a city builder, would recommend giving this game a shot. Probably the best in its series to be honest (I have only played this and Tropico 5).
In Tropico there are elections that are held every few in-game years. You have to appease the various factions of citizens to win the election. Of course, you can enact certain edicts to govern how you want to, and then just rig the election for a fee but there will be civil unrest. Of course, you can use the military to quell this as well. I played as Fidel Castro (communist) but somehow got all of the factions including religious and capitalists to like me and happiness high despite the Liberty stat being at 10%. IRL, he suppressed religion and eliminated all private enterprises! I think its because uneducated people early in game are literally too stupid to have free will or need for extensive human rights LOL. Early game is literally "I'm going to pay you 5 pesos a month to work in a corn field or you will starve to death" And that's the basis that the entire society is built on.

Ok, make sure you have Win7 compatibility mode turned on and allow the game to run as administrator, but aside from those small annoyances, the game is VERY fun, and I love the tongue-in-cheek humor! This is a city builder with a political twist in that you're the dictator of an island nation. You need to keep everyone in your city happy (So they don't vote you out of office, revolt, or stage a military coup d'etat), but you also need to keep the superpowers happy. Keeping everyone happy is ideal, but if you can only choose two, be on at least [i]good[/i] terms with the US and USSR. They may be opposed to each other, but making sure they aren't opposed to YOU is how you make sure your little island isn't turned into a battlefield. The game is pretty in-depth with it's economy mechanics and the needs and wants of each and every person, and the game does a very good job teaching you how these systems work, too, which is something I struggled with coming from the original Tropico (2001). Highly recommend for any city-builder fans!

Tropico has been a big part of my life for a long time and it all started here. This game is 14 years old now and sure the newer games have better mechanics and graphics but ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ are the vibes in this one perfect. The music, the building models, the voice acting, humour and the best sunsets in gaming history (orange glow goes so damn hard). Would be a perfect video game if it didn't alt tab crash which wipes your saves every time (seriously, don't ever alt tab).
