Memory leak, like others have noted, cripples this game. I got Trickster VR back when it first released into Early Access back in 2016, and from what I tried I was excited but wanted to wait for the full product to be finished. Well even at "full release 1.0" it still had issues, so I waited longer. Now it's clear that it's just not going to be what I had hoped for. The game itself would be good if it were technically sound. My only issue is the progressive degradation of the visuals, with framerate drops and visual smearing after the game has been open for less than one mission. I have my FPS showing and it is locked at 90 and all my other more demanding VR games run fine, but less than 15 minutes in Trickster get to the point of nausea. There's a lot of good gameplay stuff to potentially talk about but it's not even worth mentioning at this point.
Controls are absolutely horrid. For some reason, with index controllers, you can choose to teleport with left stick and rotate with right stick, or move with left stick and turn in real life. For whatever reason, you cannot move with left stick and rotate with right. This is the absolute worse movement ever made in any video game hands down.
Wouldn't recommend this game in its current state unfortunately. I played this with the Valve Index controllers and unfortunately the controls are buggy at best. I had to disable my touchpads/scrollwheels just to get the motion controls to work comfortably, and after that i had a bug where shaking my controllers would switch the weapons. It's a neat mechanic but unfortunately it fails when youre quickly drawing back an arrow or quickly swish-stabbing an enemy. The game concept is neat but a lot is unexplained properly and prone to error in terms of controls and system stuff. IF they fixed their controls and made movement more fluid (you can only move forward or back, either from a headset pov or a controller pov, which is terrible), then this game would actually be pretty fun to play with other people, provided they added more interesting content, but the 'amount' of content in the game is actually just heavily repeated and grindy to actually get to. Would not recommend: 4/10.
Getting into this game, I had bugs the MOMENT it started, like the left lens of my headset stuttering and strobing the graphics, which gave me the worst headache. It had such a ♥♥♥♥♥♥ controller layout with the right stick being used to MOVE and the left being used to LOOK. The movement was also pretty ass, as well as the gameplay being *very* as mundane and boring as "gently flick your wrist down to slap the enemy, and repeat that until it dies." I bought this as a gift for my friend as well since he was excited to play it and wanted me to play it with him, and he shared the same sentiment. It was one of the worst VR games I've ever played thus far and I hope to god every other game will wash this horrible taste out if my mouth. Overall Score: 1/10.
The physics feel dated, the sound settings don't work, and the combat is boring and feels slogish. Didn't have any fun with the different weapons.
Why would you force the player to be stuck to the ground in a sky-islands themed game. It just sucks. My camera is jumping up and down all the time as it's trying to make sure that I'm attached to the ground at all costs. I find it very disappointing that you cannot even jump down a simple 10cm ledge and have to walk around it because of an invisible wall. So much platforming potential wasted. The gameplay itself is not bad at all, but in my personal opinion, getting stuck everywhere just makes for a very frustrating experience.
[PROS] The graphics are pretty decent for both the environment and the monsters. Lots of loot boxes, just like Torchlight and Diablo. This is essentially VR Torchlight minus the variety. It's multiplayer. [OK] The long range combat is ok [CONS] I don't know why, but melee combat with swords just feels terrible and not fun, and maybe even annoying. I feel like I'm just swinging and I can't see what's happening to the Ork until they die. It feels repetitive even early in the game. There's no story. This is a minor gripe. [VERDICT] It's a nice VR Diablo lite, that's best played with other people. It's not so great playing alone unless you really enjoy near mindless hack n slash games
Loved this game with my Vive, but Reverb G2 WMR controllers aren't supported. Please fix devs!
Extremely buggy mess and becomes unplayable if you change simple settings. Even in normal gameplay, the game is really not that fun and you honestly find yourself asking "why did I buy this game" after more time you spend with it. Overall 2/10, at least the concept is cool
It's a cool tech demo. But after an hour and a half, it's painfully clear that the game already has expended all of its content. It isn't bad, it's fun, but the biggest problem is how bad of a memory leak the game has. Seriously, you'll have to restart the game every 20 minutes, or suffer through some pretty rough lag. I wouldn't recommend this game at its current price point. Maybe if it was $5 or something
