When I got this game I was drawn by the classic vibe but was kinda nervous as some of it looked a lil off. I'm very glad i took a chance though. Pros: - Really captured that 6th and 7th gen console game play. - Well made puzzles - Some amazing nods to great horror series while being it's own thing. Cons: - Not a huge fan of the characters base model - Some mechanics unfortunately have that 6th/7th gen jank - Some parts have quite a bit of back tracking In the end I really enjoyed my play and had a few endings in. It's hard to believe 1 person made this because it is really solid and the dev is super active with the community and cares deeply about the game and it shows. I give it 5/6 Door Pieces.
This game is ... something. When I bought the game, I was somewhat blinded by the appealing promotional material. Give me a survival horror game with fixed camera angles and I'm (usually) happy. However, this game rarely shares any of the things that define survival horror and technically its also not very scary, so it does not qualify as horror either. Let me get outta the way that presentation-wise the game looks awesome, although the soundtrack is all over the place. Its not bad, its just that the tracks don't seem to fit each other. First of all, don't expect a story. The game does not have one. It tells a vague narrative using documents your character can find, but those rarely make any sense and many of them are actually just clues for the puzzles. You only ever encounter lore, but not plot. The game has no plot. One of the reason the documents don't make any sense is because whoever translated the texts into English did a less than stellar job. There are blatant mistakes in there, like when the "dining room" is called the "living room" in a clue. That would not be a problem if there wasn't an actual living room that you cannot enter at that time of your playthrough. The German translation is SO bad that I'd argue that it is actually impossible to solve certain puzzles, like the gallery puzzle. The game seems to be a blend of Resident Evil and Fatal Frame. While exploring a very Resident Evil like mansion, you encounter ghost versions of your player character that can only be fought using a camera. When you hit the button, your character switches from third person fixed camera into first person "shooter" mode, which is a fairly jarring transition. Then you need to wait for the enemy to come into focus and take a snapshot. No enemy I encountered took more than one shot before they disappeared, so even on the highest difficulty they pose no challenge, except for rare occasions when they spawn right into you or you get stuck on a corner and the ghosts immediately drain your health. What was particularly frustrating is that I still have no idea how these ghosts harm me. Some do damage when they are near me, in other instances they do damage by just looking at me. The combat system is weapons-grade jank. It doesn't matter if you have lined up the perfect shot, move one inch when the enemy is in focus and you cannot hurt them. You'll have to wait until they come into focus again. What is also frustrating is that the ghosts will always spawn in the same hallway. There are two linked hallways on the 2nd floor you will need to traverse constantly (see my remarks on the layout below) and there are always ghosts. It gets extremely old, extremely quickly. The problem with combat is that even on the recommended difficulty, it is too easy. Survival Horror is about dealing with scarcity. A good survival horror experience does not give you enough to deal with everything. TRAUMA gives you plenty. It gives you so much that even your children's children will still live in the luxury of never running out of ammo and healing items. Since items stack infintely, you can run around with like 20 healing items that only use 1 space of your inventory, so the inventory management aspect of survival horror is also down the drain. After a while, you know how to traverse the mansion, but the areas are not distinct enough. Exploring that place is also a major pain because it takes a long time before you get the two keys that open up shortcuts. Before that, you will always have to take the longest route possible, including a ride in an elevator that you have to wait out, which is atrocious. By the time you get the golden key that connects the main hall with other important corridors, you never have to set foot in the mansion again. The mansion itself wants to be a Resident Evil place. There is a second house behind the garden (get it) where even the numbers on the rooms are the same as in Resident Evil 1. There is a gallery puzzle that was heavily inspired by the one from Resident Evil 1. At the end of the game, you will have to backtrack multiple times between the main manson and the garden house just to get the next item. And this is before you unlock ALL the shortcuts. Tedious as hell. The worst part about this game has to be the puzzles. First, there is not enough variety. There are multiple puzzles that are just 4 digit codes that you have to put in. Second, certain hints are just misleading. Third, there is an item that you actually need (the shovel) that you cannot SEE from the camera angle that you have to pick them up from. Fourth, there are a number of instances where you have to reach a certain milestone before you can magically enter a door that was previously sealed and just had some poem on it. Fifth, there are multiple instances where you need to find notes that tell you where to find an item before you can actually find the item. The most jarring incident of this is when you have to find a photo of a room that you have already been to before you can find the silver key just sitting on the counter of said room. The developer knows its bad so I think they patched a ton of hints in. When you open a puzzle, you get some extra text that tells you things like where you can find the notes that contain the necessary hints for this puzzle. That's super immersion breaking and the problem is that most of the time it still doesn't really help. And all of that leads to a situation of constant trial and error. Since you never know when an item (like the betrayal medallion) spawns outta nowhere in the most random of places, you're more or less obligated to check every nook of the mansion time and time and time again while not having access to the fastest ways and fighting the same enemies in the same places over and over. I gave up midgame and looked up a guide. Unfortunately, there is no guide or walkthrough or whatever for this game. There ist just one wonderful YouTuber who played the game for his chat, so I skipped through his video (which is where I learned how busted the German translation is). And to my total surprise, that YouTuber was just as lost as me. The only reason he made it through ... I kid you not ... is because the developer of this very game happened to be IN the chat and backseat coached him. You can't make this up. The dev seems super chill tho. My problem with this game is that it seems that the dev was in love with his ideas for a narrative and puzzles, but never took the time to interrogate them. It feels like just one competent playtester could have helped to avoid disaster. The talent to create a good game was most certainly there, but a mixture of conceptual problems and half-assing sealed the deal for me. I cannot in good conscience recommend for anyone to pick this game up in its current state.
I am a sucker for games that challenge my intellect over ability to fight or be stealthy. There is nothing WORSE than being frustrated with a game because some relentless enemy keeps chasing you, and all you can do is run and hide in a closet somewhere. If you're like me, then you will enjoy this game. Considering this came from one developer, it is a solid gaming experience. I am looking forward to playing their other game and all proceeding games after.
Game is awesome! Reminds me so much of old school survival horror games
this game was a HUGE shoutout to classic survival horror. the camera angels and the "what you don't see scares you" aspects were really well done! the dev showed up in my stream and chatted with everyone. This game is worth a play if you love old school Resident Evil and Silent Hill. <3
