A Charming but Flawed Model Railroad Sandbox (5/10) I first discovered Train Frontier Classic around age 9. Back then, I had no idea how to properly play it and mostly just messed around without understanding its systems. Years later, I rediscovered it in my Steam library, downloaded it, and gave it another shot with fresh eyes. Overall, it's not a bad game, but it lands solidly in the middle for me. If I had to rate it on a scale of 1 to 10, I'd give it a 5/10. It has real heart and potential, but frustrating limitations hold it back from greatness. The Good: Style, Charm, and Community Sharing The game shines brightest in its stylized art direction. It blends a vibrant, cartoonish vibe reminiscent of TF2 with charming low-poly aesthetics. This gives it a unique, toy-like feel that perfectly matches its inspiration: building model railroads. There's undeniable charm in simply driving trains around your creations or hopping into other players' worlds. The multiplayer aspect, where you can explore and ride everyone else's maps, adds a fun social layer. It captures that satisfying "playing with trains" feeling many of us remember from childhood sets. In this regard, it sits nicely alongside more relaxed train experiences like Rolling Line (another sandbox-style train builder with a focus on creativity and driving) or the simpler, puzzle-like track building in Tracks: The Train Set Game, which Train Frontier Classic has been directly compared to in early gameplay discussions. The Main Problems: Building Tools Fall Short The core issue is that the game wants you to build creatively. It encourages you to shape landscapes, lay tracks, and populate scenes with props. But the execution feels buggy, limited, and often frustrating. Limited Prop and Asset Variety: There are plenty of props, but not enough variation. For example, billboards come in just two shapes (small and large), and they cycle through only a handful of ads. This quickly leads to repetitive-looking cities. Buildings also lack diversity, making large-scale layouts feel samey over time. Clunky Controls and Tools: Roads are tricky due to forced snap-to-turn mechanics and poor camera controls. The paint/terrain tool (and the body morphing system for shaping mountains and landscapes) ties brush size to your camera distance, which makes precise work annoying. These issues disrupt the creative flow that the game tries to promote. Compared to deeper train-building games, these shortcomings stand out. Games like Trainz Railroad Simulator (especially with its robust route-building tools and community content) or Transport Fever 2 offer far more sophisticated and flexible construction systems, even if they're more simulation-heavy. Mashinky and Railroads Online also provide stronger creative freedom with better integration of building and operations. Missed Opportunities Mod Support Could Change Everything I love being able to download other players' maps — that's a highlight. But the game desperately needs better mod support. If the developers added official tools for custom models, props, and assets, Train Frontier Classic could become the Garry's Mod of train games. It already has the foundation: a sandbox feel, multiplayer, and that playful model-railroad spirit. Imagine the potential — players creating detailed custom cities, historical trains, wild dioramas, or even full campaigns. Without that, it stays a charming but limited experience rather than a true creative powerhouse. Final Verdict Train Frontier Classic delivers enjoyable moments of relaxed train driving and world-sharing, wrapped in a distinctive art style. However, its building tools feel underdeveloped and restrictive, preventing it from reaching its full potential as a creative sandbox. Who might enjoy it? Casual players who want low-stakes fun, nostalgia for model trains, or a lighter alternative to heavy sims like Train Sim World or Railroad Empire. If you're a serious builder or modder, you might find yourself wanting more depth quickly. With some updates focused on polish, asset variety, and modding tools, this could easily climb into the 7–8/10 range. As it stands, it's a fun rediscovery with clear room to grow. If you're into train games, it's worth a try during a sale, especially if you enjoy the social/map-sharing side. In short Want to play with model trains online get rolling line more modding support somthing more realistic get trainz a full fledged train sim with building train sim classic i dont think any more updates with happen to this game anymore : (
If you like train simulations like me, I think you have to try it. Against all expectations and after several months of inaction, the devs continue to make updates and that is rather good news. For me, this sim places between Rolling Line and tracks the train set game for those who know. A subtle mix between these two games. To be tested. A tester.
Hi. I really enjoyed this game for the first few days until i started a new map and erased my old one. It made me really upset. If you know if this is fixable, please tell me. Personally, I wouldn't recommend this game until this issue is fixed. (Note: If not fixable, could the developer make an update for the auto save? It's just i know i'm not the only having this problem.)

unbelievably underrated train game
Idc if they abandon it or not, I'm just glad this game isn't gone forever doomed to the xbox 360. Had a ton of fun playing this back in the day
