Rolling Line has been built from the beginning to be both a PC game (first person style) and a VR game.
You can play with a keyboard a mouse just like any PC game or train sim, but if you have a VR headset (Oculus, Vive, Valve Index and WMR) connected then it will automatically launch in VR.
If you have the Valve Index controllers then you can even make use of full finger movement tracking!
VR controls can also be fully re-binded using the SteamVR Input System.

Layouts in Rolling Line are designed to look, feel and operate like a real hobbyists model railroad, with switch boards to control the tracks, portable hand-held controllers to drive trains, and complete control over the rooms lighting.
Freely push wagons around on the rails with your hands to build trains and take control of them using DCC-style hand-held controllers!

Place pieces of track and scenery to build your own huge (or tiny) railways!
Choose from a huge range of props like trees, buildings, vehicles, shapes, etc.
Paint different colors onto props and terrain using a simple color painting system.
Choose from a variety of colors or edit your own hues and palettes.
Place down chunks of terrain to build hills and path ways, or use external 3D modelling tools to create your own complex 3D terrain (via modding).
You can build your custom layouts entirely by hand in VR, or play on PC to make use of PC-only map making shortcuts.
You can share your layouts on the Steam workshop and easily download other peoples layouts.
All layouts you make can be easily backed up and shared in plain text, which means you can copy-paste an entire save game between friends!

Switch between human-sized room scale and railway-sized miniature scale at any time, any where. You are not limited to only driving trains in miniature, but can fully explore and entire layout at the scale of a person.
Drive trains from right inside the cab in miniature, and view the world from the driver's perspective!

Choose between a range of locomotion options, including standard teleporting, grabbing the world around you to move yourself around and free directional movement with the trackpad.
Other options like manual rotation (if you cannot use room scale) and setting your player height help support a range of VR setups.

Rolling line offers an immersive experience of both controlling a model railroad and driving trains from within the world itself. Whether you enjoy exploring model railways, the joy of controlling model trains, the experience of a scenic railway journey or the freedom of building your own tracks and creations, then Rolling Line can deliver!

This game is EXTREMELY good. As a guy who watches SMT Mainline and other Youtubers, I can PERFECTLY recreate their layouts in this game. (I have 900+ mods as I speak)
I only have 7 hours into the game but I think this is a winner. If you want to play on PC, then don't let the "made for VR" scare you. It works just as well on PC. So what can I do with this besides run toy trains? You can pretty mush do anything you can do on real life model railroad, including wire up turnouts to switches and make things load and unload. You have logic gates to work with the AI trains if you wish. You can get as deep as you want. You can add all sorts of buildings by kit-bashing a mess of parts together. There are a few (free) layouts that must have taken the developer months to put together that you can copy and add on to to learn how all the interactive parts work. This I had to callout. I've played a lot of train games and Rolling Line lets you load ANY type of things found in the game on ANY flatcar or in any box car. OMG, that's a game changer. Bad news for some: There is NOTHING to fight. There is NO TIME limit. It's just like relaxing after work or school with your train set, only it's wayyyy cheaper then having real trains. Trust me. But prepare for some "different" kinds of key binds. Nothing you cannot change but just different. In most games, space is up and left ctrl is down. In Rolling Line you use your mouse wheel to float up and down. I'm sure this can be changed. My frame rates were good too. All in all I'll support it and I'll add to my review as I learn more.
This beats Dovetail's train sim to death and even gives Trainz a run for its money. By far one of the best train games out there. Multiplayer and mods with compatability between each other does a bunch of the heavy lifting, and I'm glad to say that people are waking up and realizing that good graphics aren't necessarily the end all be all of a quality experience. If you like trains, you owe it to yourself to get this, cause you're gonna love it
Rolling Line is great. If you don't got the money or room or just can't do model trains, Rolling Line simulates the experience of model railroading on a much smaller scale. I've played for a long time, made some custom maps and liveries, and overall had and continue to have a great time. Definitely recommend if you're into trains.
This is by far the best train sandbox as of 2026. Has about every single feature you could want, and any features that I felt were missing have either been added or are WIP right now. The fact that it was designed with VR and PC mode in mind from the start, not as an afterthought or bonus feature, is just the cherry on top. The art style is also extremely visually pleasing and stunning, and makes it easy to create stuff up to par with the default assets easier (think classic LEGO). For an indie game the workshop is massive too, this is already at "I don't have enough time to check out every submission that I impulsively subscribed too" instead of the dozen or so submissions indie titles often have on the workshop. Oh, did I mention that people have been using this to just make art maps instead of just train maps?
The advertised "multiplayer" is just a hangout lobby, was expecting to actually be able to play the game in the multiplayer.

SO GOOD
its only fun with mods and friends but if they don't have storage LIKE A SPECIFIC SOMEONE other than that its a good game if too broke to have a irl model train layout
Really a very weird experience. The controls are odd to say the least, maybe as they've tried to make a VR game playable without VR. Got a refund quickly.
