A little gem: the greatest immersivity among the train simulators I have run. It does a few things, but it does them greatly: only diesel cars (no steam, no electric), only England (unless some user adds routes from other countries) and (almost) only from the Sixties. But: - the `feeling` of the mass (and of the dynamics) involved is great - the 'response' of the vehicles is very realistic (I don't know enough of train physics to tell how 'real' it is, but it certainly looks like it is) - the controls are accurate - everything can be controlled by keyboard, which avoids the need to look away from the route to 'aim' at specific controls all over the place and operate them with the mouse, which (unreasonably, on a PC) affects many other train simulators The quality of the graphics has been criticised: IMHO if you spend time looking at the quality of water reflections, you shouldn't drive a train! (probably you will enjoy some other game more) The programme does not waste resources on eye candies, but focus on simulation. The number of routes provided is small, but with a large number of time tables and with the re-playability of each increased by the interaction with AI trains (often meaning red lights!) which are never precisely the same; and a number of additional routes is available in the workshop. Summary: if simulation is your genre, in general and of trains in particular, BUY IT! it is worth any penny.
That's how you make a game. The core first, then improve visuals. Features lots of stuff DTG are failing to deliver. And thankfully it's not UnrealEngine :)
It's difficult to give this game a thumbs down, but at the moment I think I need to. As train sims go, this one does a fantastic job with early DMUs - they feel and sound great, and driving them well is challenging but rewarding. That chunky mechanical 'feel' in particular sets this somewhere between railfan games like TSW and the more hands-on experience of Derail Valley. Scoring is also better handled than most other sims, with considerations like passenger comfort (so you can't just go from full throttle to max brake) and fuel expenditure (so there's a reason to coast instead of twiddling the throttle to stay at max speed). So why do I not recommend it? Well primarily the unfinished nature of the game and lack of progress on development. The UI is basic and career mode has yet to be released so you essentially pick a route and drive it, see your score, then start over. The amount of built-in content is also a bit slim with only three routes, and while workshop support is great and there's quite a bit of content on there, a lot of it is ~3 years old and there doesn't seem to be an active community anymore. The last 24 updates (going back to June 2023) have all been minor patches for scenery and graphical bugs, and a 'gameplay update' that was initially announced for the second half of 2024 is only now in beta testing in January 2026. It doesn't help that the dev released a second early access train game in August 2025 - it feels like they've been focused on that rather than finishing this one. When the gameplay update makes it to the main branch then I'll give it another go, but right now it feels like a game that had great potential but has been left to go stale.
Genuinely fun and enjoyable, scratches the same itch as ETS2 and ATS. I like the way you configure the difficulty.
One of the best train simulators ever made! The Steam Workshop mods are superb too!
Yes, recommend it to others. Nothing to dislike at all, all very good
A lovely little British railsim. DRS is probably one of the best value for money train sims I've had in awhile, it may not be visibly flashy, but the under-the-hood detail and actual gameplay pushes it above most rail simulators for me. While stock variety is low - for the time being - the driving systems for the stock available is very faithfully recreated from what I can tell from my own experience. Especially the 1st Gen DMUs that form the bulk of the stopping passengers, with a couple of locomotives to add variety. The rolling stock editor, route editor, timetable editor, and the workshop allow for great customizability and modularity that the vast amount of Train Sims on the market just don't have, which is vastly and steadily increasing the amount of rolling stock, routes, and timetables, lovingly crafted by the growing modding community in place of developer made assets - allowing them to focus on more important things like gameplay features and optimisation. I truly recommend this game to anyone looking for a good quality railsim on a budget - and for anyone who don't have a beefy computer to run the "top of the line" simulators.
default XBox controller controls remind me of the Japanese and Korean sims, but geared DMU are a challenge here or in TSW. It introduces you quite gently to the problems you will have.
DRS is the rarest of breeds - a realistic train simulator that's still easy to learn. This is a great game for both beginners to and experts at the genre. Its biggest downside is its limited scope. If you have zero interest in 1950s-60s England, there will not be a lot here for you. But what it does do, it does WELL, and it's 100% worth playing.
