I got this game for free through the publisher's FB page, keys might still be available until January 5th 2023. Like the other reviewers have already mentioned, this game is a mix between assassin's creed and mirror's edge (I haven't played this game but saw some videos), but also has FPS gameplay elements, so, in sum, a First Person Parkour Platformer Shooter. The story seems inspired by Assassin's creed: ancient gods, lost artifacts and two secret fractions fighting each other. The game has some interesting cutscenes between levels where the story and lore is explained. The graphics are minimalist, but good, specially if you scale them up to 4K. The game takes place in a simulation that looks similar to AC's Animus. The interactive objects are also highlighted from the rest of the level to make them easier to spot and use. The parkour part of the game is similar to AC: the climbing animations are almost identical, but the wall walking is more Mirror's edge. Unlike AC there is a lot more unsafe moves options, meaning that you'll be dying a lot in some parts, when you jump at the wrong time or in the wrong direction. I was playing in the keyboard because of the FPS part of the game, but it's probably better to use a controller for the platforming parts and just try to use the joysticks for the aiming. The shooting seems like the weakest part of the game, even when I was aiming well the shoots didn't seems to connect well (maybe it's resolution related?) and when they did, the impact was minimal, just a small blood animation. There are 4 different weapons available, but only the rate of fire seems different. My personal issue with the game are the checkpoints, maybe it's because I'm used to casual games, but I just don't like having to repeat the same part of the level just until I can go from one checkpoint to the other without dying. I'd prefer an unrestrained saving system or a more generous checkpoint placing. Overall, I liked playing it, but I simply don't have the patience to keep repeating the same parts, but i'd keep playing if I could have whenever I wanted. I think it's worth it's current discounted price (roughly 1 EUR) and I recommend it for people that like challenging games that force you to keep dying and practicing until you get better. If you're a casual gamer the game will probably frustrate you specially if you don't have fast reflexes.
Follow our curators page Climbers-Germany if you like this review or like to play more movement based games
Trails of the Black Sun is a parkour platformer with shooting elements in it. While the game itself has inspiration from games like Tron / Assassin's Creed (computer simulation) or Mirrors Edge (colored highlighted obstacles) it builds a story on its own. The games main goal is to find the artefact in the simulated level, which can be high up or somewhere in the map behind some mechanics (doors). For for the actual gameplay: Wallrunning is mostly a piece of cake other mechanics needs just one button press. So nothing where you really need to train your skills to master the game. On Level 3 where sliding got introduced to the player, when you are failing it. The moving cubes are getting out of sync and there is no escape in failing this particular part over and over, which was quite disappointing at one point. After a break and a good amount of coffee we had over come that problem. While we finished the whole game, this was onliest problem we had been encountered during our playthru for the movement. Mean while the game increased from the shooting difficulty on the second level, because of the hit prediction. Where bullets where not hitting the enemey, while they were hitting you all the time. This was just a small set back to get the player adjusted in playstyle. After all was settle and the change in playstyle, we could finish the game. Since the game is setup being a simulation, the overall asthetic style of the game(menu, level design and effects) are fitting directly to it. Level simulations are decoded directly from serveral textblocks which gives you as a player an immersion to be in a simulation or using somekind of simulation device. For explorers the game uses some sort of skilling mechanic. You can find points over the whole level and you can seek for secrets to find more points. With the points you can buy upgrades for your weapons or upgrade your suite with colors, armor or points multiply factor. Sound effects and music had been used in a good way to build up the style of the simulation. We could still play the game longer since we haven't found all the secrets in the levels but overall the game felt pretty short. But seeing the Credits, short is not really accurate. Since it was developed by one person. Its not the perfect game and some would say, copied ideas from Mirrors Edge or Tron / Assassin's Creed. In the end its not. Rebel Graphix used an idea / theme in their own way instead of copying a game. Which was kind of refreshing. Would we recommend the game? Sure if you like movement type games or parkour games, you should test it. If it is really something for you? Its up to you!
Mirrors Edge no Animus do Assassin's creed
this is like mirrors edge/assassins creed parkour game set inside animus. pretty clunky and bland.
This game has very nice visuals and a good romp for people who are good with First Person perspective platformers. Sadly I do not belong in that echelon as I am more of a Turn Based Strategy gamer. I will give this game a Thumbs Up Review though because the Developer was nice enough to give out a free key for it for testing it out.
Let's put an end to the argument that the gameplay is essentially a parkour-based imitation of another popular series. Although there are obvious similarities, how well it plays is what really counts, and I was pleasantly impressed. The same can’t be said for the story. There are a few lines that link the levels together at the beginning and end, but modern Templars and search for artifacts aren't exactly ground-breaking. However, even this is appreciated because otherwise, there would just be a bunch of levels without any connections. The gameplay is simple: while running along a path or setting, you jump or climb obstacles utilizing platforming techniques. The game takes place in a simulation where climbable objects are marked with bright red color. You have standard pipes, ladders and ledges. Despite having a virtual reality appearance and gray color, the locations are not monotonous, and you will travel to a variety of destinations. The stage's primary areas are connected by an unusual path that is being constructed as you go, so you never know what will appear. When wall-running and unsure of where to go, things can become challenging because you can only see a few meters in front of you. To be fair, there is some sort of matrix indicating where the environment is supposed to be. Fortunately, beating the best time is not the goal of the game. To make things more exciting, there is plenty of exploration and enemies. Attacking an opponent from behind, jumping on them, or simply firing your weapon at them is how you handle such situations. If you find yourself in a tight spot, you can mark a few adversaries and have them killed when you use your special ability. They aren't especially smart because they don't notice when you take out one of their friends quietly, but in a gunfight, they will quickly take care of you. Enemies don't respawn even if you die since they stay dead when you kill them, which is another unique feature of the game. If you are having trouble with a combat part of the stage, this is a big relief. It's wise to gather points that appear along the way or at secret locations where there is a higher reward. Environmental exploration is encouraged because there is no death penalty and you’ll always respawn at the last checkpoint. Picking up points just once is sufficient; you don't even have to make it to the following checkpoint. At laptop stations or after finishing a stage, points are spent to upgrade your weapons and outfit. With more attachments for health, ammunition, and accuracy, the selection is quite generic. Additionally, you can alter the look of your suit, although this is a point-wasting move that is best left for later. If you missed a secret room, you can replay any stage from the main menu. It’s a shame achievements are broken. Given that the issue has been present since October, there is no sign that it will be resolved.
