Trails in the Sky is the first entry in Falcom’s beloved turn-based RPG series. The story follows siblings (and eventual lovers) Estelle and Joshua Bright as they begin their journey as junior bracers, inspired by their legendary father Cassius Bright. The narrative is a slow burn, gradually revealing how seemingly unrelated incidents — sky pirates, a corrupt mayor who burns down an orphanage, and the kidnapping of Professor Russell — all connect to a larger conspiracy. At the center is Colonel Richard, leader of the Special Ops force, who manipulates events to seize ancient orbal technology and overthrow Queen Alicia by installing her weak-willed nephew as a puppet ruler. The climax sees Estelle and Joshua rescuing the queen and her grand daughter, then confronting Richard in a final showdown. Combat is split between two styles: Action encounters: You can run, strike enemies, and dodge attacks, but these battles feel slow and tedious. Turn-based combat: The main system, where you combine bracer skills to defeat opponents. It’s fun at first but quickly becomes repetitive, as every chapter throws similar monsters in your path. Boss fights are often frustrating: enemies with 40,000 HP compared to your 2,000–6,000, capable of wiping your party in two hits or with devastating group attacks. The loop becomes predictable — buff, heal, attack, repeat until victory. Some characters, like Kloe, offer powerful support skills (revives, buffs, debuffs), but roster flexibility is limited. Estelle and Joshua are permanent members, and you only gain real party customization in Chapter 4. 🌟 Strengths Likeable protagonists and a memorable supporting cast. A decent, well-paced story that ties together small incidents into a larger conspiracy. Nostalgic JRPG-style maps with updated visuals. ❌ Weaknesses Repetitive battles and recycled enemy designs. Boss fights rely on inflated stats rather than creative mechanics. Gameplay loop feels unrewarding compared to the narrative payoff. While the story and characters are enjoyable, the combat system drags the experience down. Unless you’re invested in Falcom’s world-building and want to see the seeds of later arcs in Second Chapter and The 3rd, this entry is not recommended at full price.

I feel like the game is a downgrade. not a remake. Repeatable game assets and blunt place.

Just finished the game and oh my god was outstanding. I am the guy that cherishes the story most in the game and mostly I play just the main story. However this battle system even though turn based was so fast and addictive. I also did all the side quests. It took me 40 hours to complete and I enjoyed 98% of it. Absolute recommendation for JRPG fans. Can't wait for 2nd chapter to come out. Don't wanna jinx but it looks like it will be even better than this one.

This was my first Trails game and I can't believe how much I've been missing out. This is a true JRPG with a great cast (both main and side), lots of fun side quests, and a world you can learn about with ease since there's nothing overly complicated. Looking only at comparison videos, the original looks quite charming versus the remake but I don't think you can go wrong with starting here like I did. It also runs great on the Steam Deck with no settings adjustments (and before the graphic patch). The story starts out pretty slowly, but it ramps up after you start to feel familiar with the world. The game does set up for the next chapter, but it explains just enough about what happens in this one that it's not just all cliffhangers. The combat's confusing at first and some of the battles are really hard even on Normal (notably two fights in the prologue...) but it's surprisingly in-depth later on with varying orbment/equipment combos and different arts, (de)buffs, etc. It just doesn't get stale with the clever mix of action and turn-based mechanics. High-Speed Mode (which is customizable) is a godsend if you start to find the explorations or combat slow/repetitive. The JP voice acting is fantastic, although there were some awkward moments where one set of the cast would be voiced but the others wouldn't be. I think it's one of the simpler JRPGs to get into and definitely one you should try if you want a slow burn story with compelling characters and an interesting world, especially if you're just on the edge. Now I'll be (impatiently) waiting for the 2nd Chapter remake to come out...!

Восхитительный ремейк, восхитительный OST, восхитительная оценка, ставлю лосяру!! Больше всего меня теперь забавят отговорки фанатов каллсоны (1-2) что якобы разрабы не могут сделать ремейк игры из-за того, что это будет очень тяжело, что это будет совершенно новая игра. Гляньте на этот ремейк и дальше хавайте кaлловые массы от своих любимых атлусов.

Tried to like it, but couldn't. Lots of dialogue to click through, combat doesn't feel intuitive, the inactive character following me as an NPC irritates me. Graphics are alright and the protagonists are charismatic. Can't really say anything about the story because I couldn't force myseld to play more than a couple minutes in a session. It's my first JRPG, so maybe it's not the game itself but the genre that doesn't appeal to me.
