I played like 20 something stages for the Heroes mode and then I played the Roguelike mode some more. The gameplay is original but when I bought the game I thought it was a Tower Defense game and this game instead is like an Auto Tower game. The towers are pre located on each stage. Your towers generate soldiers automatically and those soldiers capture other towers, or improve them gradually. so the pace and the balance of the game that auto-generates soldiers in the towers is gradually in your favor and you will re route thw soldiers generated to other towers. Some stages include multiple armies with some neutral towers so the tactics in the initial seconds are vital. You also have some special abilities that can be passive, or triggered ones as spells from your hand that will produce a momentary attack. And heroes with those different spells. These will affect the gameplay by killing enemy troops and damaging buildings. and therefore giving you an advantage on crucial moments. In the end the game feels like a similar TD gameplay but it is NOT a tower defense. Being said that is not a bad game but I would have preferred a classic tower defense game :( This is just a personal taste but I still value that the developers created an original alternative and also added Roguelike mechanics on top of that. And I think that many Tower Defense players may still enjoy this original variant. However I'm pretty sure some may feel the game a little bland compared to the depth Strategy of normal or advanced Tower Defense games. So far it doesn't look complex but maybe I'm judging too fast and there is more depth on further content, and heroes to unlock. Besides that the game looks cartoonish & good. I had no issues at all, and I like the visuals and playing in VR. is very easy & enjoyable as you can see the board very comfortably and stretch or move freely on it and pointing the towers. The only big drawback that I can mention is that the powers are not well placed IMHO, the game forces you to turn your hand up so the powers appear in your palm, but after some time playing I will just leave the palm up , and it makes my hand to hurt over time. I would have preferred to have the spells around in a more comfortable way to select them or in a more natural way to my hand. Maybe need just one movement to call them and leave them floating and if needed another movement can be used to disable those. Devs were responsive on the forums so far.
Experienced on the Meta Quest 2
You can view my review & gameplay here: https://youtu.be/1AJkPPZmYac This is an alright game. It's a RTS / TD hybrid game with some roguelike elements (you die, you have to restart from the very beginning). You have 2 modes: adventure and endless (misnomer). Endless is basically a simplified version of the game where you don't have to worry about upgrading your towers or soldiers or choosing which spell to unlock. You basically pick a hero and you have their 3 magical cards and then each level is a scenario you have to defeat. So you choose the best quick strategy to attack, while using the 3 magical spells on cooldown as best you can. The adventure mode is much more interesting because it adds some RNG. At the start of each round, you select one of 3 random upgrades or spell unlock. Some upgrades have certain synergies between them. However, the core gameplay remains the same. You build up towers by sending your soldiers there and you attack neutral or enemy towers. The stronger the tower, the more soldiers you can send. The more towers you control, the more avenues of attack you have. You connect lines between each tower to send soldiers. Game is running on the Unity Engine. On my RTX 3080, I was getting a steady 90 fps. Locomotion is via grabbing air and pulling yourself around, turning is by grabbing air with both hands and spinning yourself around. There are no graphical settings, in fact, settings are very limited. All the interactions are point & click. I did experience one serious bug where the enemy tower was invisible, along with the soldiers it was sending out. The main problem with this game is that although there is some depth, it lacks enough variety. After a certain point, you pretty much have upgraded almost everything and have unlocked almost every spell. The longer you play the game & survive, the less strategy there is. You basically just monitor your cooldowns at that point. This game is at its most challenging & strategic, at the very beginning of the levels. Multiplayer would have been a good way of keeping the gameplay from getting stale. However, this game is only SP. The point & click interactions also make you wonder what VR brings to this experience other than the 3D god-view of the board. I found the music annoying & the environment around the board to be silly. Rate 6/10.
Please note: I received a free Steam key through the Steam Curator Connect program. Got this game on a giveaway by the Devs Discord Server I started the game expecting to get entertained for a while... and ended up playing +2hrs and wanting for more lol,. Very easy to get into, Finishing levels felt very satisfying no matter if it was an easy or a hard one, i got that sense of accomplishment thats nice to have in a game. You start next to a table where your battlefield will be, there youll start with one or a couple of towers, different colors like yellow, red or green are controlled by enemies, Grey ones are neutral, to beat the levels you need to conquer all the towers. To do so, you click and drag from your towers to another tower, that will determine where to send troops, if you send them to an enemy or neutral tower, you will attack and try to take over, if you click to a friendly tower you will reinforce it with extra troops. But thats not it, as in, if you decide to reinforce a friendly tower, it will improve its level and will produce units faster, but if you so, the enemy might conquer another neutral tower and thus have one more source of soldiers. It all comes down to HOW you decide to direct your troops, go directly for enemies towers? or conquer some neutral ones first to have more troops available? maybe if 2 enemies are fighting for the same tower, wait and reinforce your towers, until they are weak from fighting against each other, and then you start attacking... You can also use powerups in the form of cards in your wrist that you use on the battlefield, from freezing enemy towers, slowing down enemy troops, to sending meteors or placing a temporary lake of lava to tactically give you an advantage among others. All in all is a very complete game with more mechanics and things to watch out that seems at first. And It didnt feel overwhelming, but i did have to keep an eye on different things to not lose. While id consider the game on the easy side, i lost more than a couple of games i thought i had in the bag because i got careless, so the challenge is there. While the game needs a few adjustments (one fireboss i encountered was impossible to beat), a couple of sfx seem to be missing, and a way to tilt the table would be nice for my neck, this all is being taken care of by the devs, who are pretty responsive on their discord. I recommend this game to anyone wanting a not so stressful real time management game that is very easy to get into, but with enough mechanics to keep it interesting for a while.
I received this game in a giveaway the devs where doing, i had no idea what the game was about. I thought it was a normal tower defence game by the title of the game but i was wrong, it’s not a normal tower defence game its more of an auto tower game. There are 2 game modes in the game adventure and endless. There is a lot to like about adventure mode, the rouge like element to the game where if you die its all over and that every game is going to be different from how you build your deck of spells and how you upgrade your towers/soldiers. It adds more reliability to the game like all rouge like games. I played a game of adventure and the first 30 rounds I didn’t pick any spells or abilities all I picked was tower and soldier upgrades. Every round I was able to start sending out my soldiers before the enemy could send out theirs so in some cases I was able to straight up start attacking their tower before they could even send out troops to defend or try and get another tower, this allowed me to finish some battle with the first 20 secs of being there. The strategy behind the game isn’t hard and after a while of playing the game it gets dull and doesn’t seem like there is any stagey to the game other then just point a tower at another tower and click. Also I find it really hard to die after you are fully set up as you have multiple spells, upgraded towers and soldiers that can take over a tower in secs if you just point them to it. The endless mode is basically the same as adventure but instead you pick a “hero” to play as and you get all their spells/abilities. To use from the start and at the end of the round you cant upgrade your spells or towers/soldiers. I feel like this game mode is a very good way to use the spells and understand what each spell can do. there are multiple things I would love to see added to the game. 1. Multiplayer, co-op and versus mode 2. Levelling system for multiplayer or single plater that allowed you to unlock cosmetics 3. Level creation, allowing the community to build levels and show their creativity. 4.Diffuclty increase as the game goes on (adventure) 5. Level system where you level up and can unlock new towers, soldiers and abilities 6. A story that introduces the hero’s/villain’s and their abilities 7. New fantasy races, such as elfs, dwarfs, orcs (made just look at Tolkien for some examples haha) 8. Different towers such as a range tower that can shot targets within a certain range from it. 9. Different environments to play in other then the house. 10. More levels to the game, I kept running into the same “map” over and over again in my time of playing 11. Different soldier types such as mounted soldiers that run faster then normal but do less damage and have less health, or once they die once their mount dies and they turn into a normal soldier. 12. More spell elements such as wind, lighting, nature ( examples could be a tornado that lifts enemy troops in the air for a short time, a chain lighting attack that attaches to enemy troops and towers, a tree root blocks the path for you and the enemy) 13. Allow you to pick up the soldiers with you hands since it is vr 14. More Hero’s or Villain’s 15. Add a timer before the round starts (so that you can send troops out before the computer/player) 16.allow you to see your stats of your soldiers while in game (see how much damage/health they do/have…. Either in like a book you can pull out or something) I will say I did enjoy playing the game and it was a fun expense in vr. I would recommend the game as it is fun to play for a little bit. I love the art style of the game and I hope that the devs keep updating the game and adding more to it.. I would love to see the game get bigger and to expand the community.
I grew up playing TD games, so I was excited to play my first VR TD game. This game is a lot of fun! It requires you to strategically think and you can use cool Ability (magic) cards to help turn the tides of the battle. If you like TD games, I'd recommend this one. Here are some suggestions for the dev team. - It would be great to have a built-in slow-mo option to toggle on and off, like many other TD games. I found myself holding on to an ability card's effect in order to use the slow-mo feature, but having an option to toggle slow-mo on and off whenever would be nice. It's nice to take my time and think about next moves. - Sometimes there was a lot of visual clutter when there were many buildings attacking each other buildings, so it wasn't immediately clear what building was attacking my main base. - I felt a little overwhelmed by having so many ability cards, and this led me to be more focused on mix/maxing the timers to make sure I used an ability ONCE it became available, and I thus spent less time focusing on the board. This might be able to be resolved by having cards have longer times but stronger effects, OR, being able to deploy cards a different way besides having to keep your hand open at all times. Alternatively, maybe this is my fault because I sometimes choose lots of cards at the expense of leveling them up, lol!
Not well balanced, by level 5 your done by the first boss. Plus graphic settings aren't there. It's ok.
Good basic concept - but needs more fine-tuning and long-term motivation! Whether you’re a fan of tower defense, strategy-based gameplay, or just enjoy tabletop games, Tower Defender: Hero Wars is a game for you. There is a lot of potential and the basis is already there. Here are some things: Pros: + Cool hybrid gameplay + Spells + Upgrades + Enemy heros + RNG + You can spend a lot of time with this game without getting bored + Developers are in good contact with the players Cons: - Not the kind of tower defense you would expect - Repetitive and no real highlights - No long-term motivation - Balancing issues - Game feels unpolished and needs adjustments So far I'm having a lot of fun with this game. Unfortunately, I miss the variety and challenges. This game is quite new so I'm sure to see a lot more content in the future. The developers take good care of the community. I'm excited to see how this will all develop.
Experienced on a Meta Quest 2 with airlink. Tower Defender VR is an amazing looking God like table top tower defense game. It has tactical RPG and roguelike elements, mixed in with strategy gameplay. You get to choose one of five heroes to play as. You will not only be guiding your troops on where to attack next, you will also be using cards to cast spells down upon your enemies like a God. The world you are immersed into is just beautiful and alive. Just the menu screen along was breath taking and had a lot to explore. The room in which you do battle in really gives you a God like feel as you move around over the game table. The controls are very easy to move around and will not cause any motion sickness. You can also use room scaling and just walk around if you have the space. The combat was easy to pick up and use. Casting spells down on your enemies just feels empowering. Special when you ran down fire or use a giant hammer to smash the enemy castles. Each Hero will have a different set of skill cards to use, so no two heroes are alike. You need to strategically direct your troops to attack, to gain ground and hold it. You will use your God like powers to aid them in their battle. There are two modes of play, casual and survival mode. In casual you will play endless generated maps. This is nice and relaxing and very addictive. Survival mode you will embark on a journey and also battle bosses. This is one of the best VR tower defense games I have play. Its very immersive and empowering, and gives you a great VR gaming experience. If you are into tower defense games, or tactical RPGs and enjoy God like gameplay. You will not want to miss this title. This is a good game, but it's not a VR game. For that reason I don't really see myself playing it that much.
Great game, very well done. Easy to jump in and get lost battling towers for hours!
