Why tf is this not an easy recommend? It's got fun voice acting, great gameplay that rewards setup and strategy, and it's 16.99. It's addicting, but I recommend you save when you do something right and progress.
Play the first 2 chapters. Look great so far. Like the all doom and groom mood in this game.
Understand I don't much like these sort of games and yet this game is kinda amazing...Don't really understand negative reviews or relative lack of interest. The price point is very reasonable and its on sale now - there are even cheaper steam keys out there if you look! While I didnt have any major bugs myself devs have also begun some bug fixing and Q&L that has definitely bettered this game. The story (writing) and voice acting is way better than it has any right being at this price point the gameplay is actually solid and can be addictive - (see my playtime) meant to try it for an hour or so and couldn't put it down when I started playing. Only on fourth mission/map now (I played slow so I didn't lose any units on hard) but would recommend for those who have an interest in rts/rpg tactical shooters with stealth mechanics.(I actually tend to hate stealth but can tolerate it here due to commendable design). Btw units at least early have their own portrait and personality not baldurs gate level but its a nice immersive touch that its not all just soldier one or soldier two. The game play is surprisingly deep and tactical and very punchy, the sound...what the hell?? The individual audio fits the action well but the game springs out some banger tracks on you all of a sudden for some surprise awesome. The mission/map design so far has been pretty solid and well thought-out. I got this on a deep sale but after playing think I would buy at full price just to support dev would love to see where they go next. In terms of things I would improve, the game could use even more quality of life like a dedicated switch weapon button (if there is one I haven't found it) and the ability to re order unit portraits in the display window would help with organizing missions with a larger unit count. There aren't a whole ton of rpg skills but there are a couple enjoyable ones that vary up the gameplay and give you a new ability instead of just passive buffs. The pathing is functional right now but isn't so great you can click from halfway across the map starcraft style not that I'd expect that sort of thing from an indie dev. The mission evaluation screen doesn' track stats well. It said I used 0 ammo and lost 11 units in second mish when I lost none and practically vommitted ammo from every orifice...think the lost unit count might be due to loading the units onto the vehicle which is technically a despawn I guess.¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Also there are one or two points when your companion is referred to as "native" instead of by her real name, relatively minor nitpick that didnt affect my enjoyment but worth mentioning as it can be easily fixed - happened in build up to second mission. All in all get this game but know what to expect.
I love RTS games, and this is quite a fun one to play! It's one of these games I couldn't stop playing. I was enjoying myself through the first few missions, when all of the sudden, one of the main characters got stuck on a wall. I had to continue the mission without him, but at the end of the mission, I found out he needed to talk to someone to complete the mission. Oh well, I can't continue - unless I restart the entire level back from scratch. I tried reloading from a saved game, but now the character has disappeared from the map. He still shows in the HUD, but when you move to his supposed location, he's not in the map, and if I select him, the game says nothing is selected. Either way I cannot finish the mission and continue the game. There are also the path finding issues, where we can assign units to shortcuts, but part of the group stays behind and won't move. You have to undo the group and redo it, as many times as it takes for the group to move all units again, which is very frustrating. Oh, and there are pickups you cannot pick. Sometimes you can grab them, sometimes you can't. Too bad if they are part of the mission, for then you are screwed. I figured that if you click the pickable items a lot, sometimes they become pickable again. Depends on luck, it seems. You have fun vehicles you can enter and drive, which is great! I really love the hover bikes! HOWEVER, once your character enters one, there is a chance it will get stuck inside and will not be able to exit. I tried moving the vehicle to different places and exiting again, but the character just stands up and cannot move. He needs to jump out of the vehicle to be able to move, but here again, I have found many cases where he gets stuck and cannot exit. There was also a case where a hover bike was close to a wall, and I tried to get a character to drive it, and once I issued the command, the character got stuck in a running loop never reaching the vehicle, and I cannot cancel it because the action was never finished - yet another lost character I couldn't use in the game anymore. Then I went to play Skirmish, but it was just a single location with several gates to defend, and a new way of enemies spawns every 2 minutes, so there is not enough time to prepare. It is more frustrating than it is fun. You can put mercenaries on the walls to defend the gates, but once the enemies get close to walls, nobody can shoot them, so they can just destroy the gates at their leisure, and there is nothing you can do. Who designed a fortified fortress wall that do not allow defending its gate? But wait, it gets better - you have a repair building, but you cannot repair gates. And then we have the heavy guns. Everybody carrying a weapon automatically shoots when the enemy is in range, except those carrying heavy guns because they need to be mounted first. Characters will just stand there, being shot to death, and will not use these awesome weapons. In addition, weapons become magically disabled if the enemy is too close. If you didn't equip a knife or machete, they will just stand still and get killed because they lost their will to live. They have a rifle - just shoot! But noooo, it's better to do nothing and get killed instead. And then there is the mini map. It's very large on the upper right corner, and it's invisible if the mouse is not on top of it. How many times I tried moving units at critical moments in the game, but ended up clicking the invisible map instead, which causes the camera to move away from the action I wanted to do. By the time I return, how many have died? Believe me or not, I would still keep playing - in spite of all this. Except that I cannot continue because the character who needs to speak has vanished from the map when trying to enter a vehicle. He won't return even if I reload a saved game. I don't want to replay the entire level all over again, so I will give it a break for now. Bottom line, it's a GREAT RTS game riddled with bugs. If you are Ok with all this, buy the game!
Well, after last updates game seems playable soo.
Gray Zone

Me When RTS Games 😅
Before even saying anything related to the game, I just want to admit something. So, I hate playing RTS Games. I’ve probably tried like only 1 or 2 titles from this genre till now. This means that I obviously have no knowledge on how such games function. But yes, I will be trying my best to review this game with whatever I know about and I promise not to be biased since I technically hate games from this genre. At least I am honest about this. Gray Zone has been in early access ever since April 2020. They finally released the “Final Version” of this game in December 2022, more than 2 years later. They needed this long since the game was apparently a bug haven before. I am glad they were able to resolve all these issues while adding more content! Let’s just jump right into the review.
About This Game

Storyline
I was taken aback by how good this game’s plot actually is. I didn’t think RTS games come with a good storyline since they would mostly be gameplay-centered. As of now, they released only one chapter. According to the game’s store page’s description, they have planned to release a total of 4 chapters. I don’t know how they would do this. They might directly add it as an update to the base game, release them as separate titles or release them as either paid or free DLCs. Either way, I hope it’s free lmao. The game’s plot without any spoilers goes something like this:
Take on the role of Valern, a slave to a corrupt government, who is destined for greatness. Embark on a journey into the future traversing across several colonized planets while encountering various friends and foes.
This is actually pretty good for a supporting plot. It is clear that a lot of thought went into this. But yeah, most of the players would focus on the gameplay over the story since such games are gameplay-centric.
Gameplay Mechanics
Oh my god, when I first got into this game, I was overwhelmed by how much stuff there was. Luckily, there is a pretty decent tutorial and each mechanic is labeled correctly. This also means that the game is rich in the gameplay segment. I hope everyone who is reading knows how RTS Games work since I would be the worst person to explain it. Well, if you don’t, I recommend reading this article about RTS games by Acer! In this game, the developers define the gameplay as a fusion between Men of War and Commandos. I have played neither of these titles so I can neither confirm nor deny this claim. I was taken aback when I saw the number of features the game has. You have access to melee weapons, firearms, vehicles, and other machinery, recruiting people to your squad, etc. This game has too many mechanics for me to literally mention in this review. So, let me just list the major ones:

Moving around is pretty straightforward. You just have to use your mouse pointer and click where you want to go and the game will automatically map a path to that point. Your character will then follow that path. So yeah, I guess this is the standard RTS Game Movement Mechanics. I am used to relying on WASD keys to move your character around so this was a bit tricky for me to get used to.
Combat here can either be carried out stealthily or you can take the guns-blazing approach. Well, that all depends on how good you are at planning and strategizing. But stealth combat isn’t really good since the enemies are a bit buggy. Some of them literally spawn out of nowhere. In addition to that, you have the ability to see the enemies’ FoV and sometimes, you can literally see the FoV cone appear buggy asf.
There’s a button that allows you to command a unit to collect all loot from the nearby corpses.
Items exchange allows you to trade/quick-switch items between two units in your squad.
The other commands you can give any unit member are as follows:- [olist]
Ground Attack: This allows you to choose a particular point so the shooting is directed there.
Crouch: As the name suggests, this makes your chosen unit crouch which is useful during stealth situations.
Hold Fire: This ensures that the selected unit doesn’t shoot or attack.
Stealth Mode:: This is a combination of Crouch and Hold Fire which can instantly be toggled during stealth situations.
Stop: Stop all the actions for the selected unit.
Knockout: Carries out a blunt attack to knock out an enemy. Basically a pacifist alternative to killing.
Throw a Rock: Throws a rock to distract enemies.
Pull Body: Pull a dead body to reposition it so that it doesn’t alert other enemies.
Enter The Vehicle: As the name suggests, the chosen unit enters the selected vehicle.
Summon Anika: Basically summons/hides Anika.[/olist]
There’s a skill tree for your character which can make your character stronger. You obviously need to earn skill points by leveling up.
The game automatically saves progress at random times. Yes, you can also manually save whenever you want. They also allow you to name the save file. But the thing with the autosave is that it can save at the worst times. Like once, I was in combat and then died. When I reloaded the save, I was thrown back into the same combat and then died again. This forced me to restart and lose all my current progress since I don’t have the habit of manually saving. So yeah, they should set checkpoints or something to make autosave better. I recommend manually saving whenever you successfully finish a task.
I will stop right here since I don’t want this to become a wiki for this game. All-in-all, the variety in mechanics is pretty good. Although the game had over 2 years to work on bugs and issues, they still didn’t completely fix the game. I am sure they will address the existing issues in the upcoming updates!
Visuals & Audio
What’s really amazing is the visual and aural aspects of the game. I am not sure what art style it uses but it does look good. It reminds me of what Mad Max looked like although it isn’t as detailed. The variety in flora and fauna is phenomenal. I am also a fan of the cartoony-comic-styled cut-scenes. To enhance the overall gameplay experience, they actually have voice actors. They put a lot of passion and emotion into the voice acting which makes it even more enjoyable. So yeah, it’s an easy 100/10 for this segment.
Pros

The game actually has a pretty good storyline.
Omg, this title is actually rich in gameplay mechanics.
Yes, planning and strategizing obviously play a vital role. Due to this, they offer a “Tactic Mode” which aids you to come up with strategies.
I am a big fan of the game’s visuals since it really suits the gameplay and the lore.
They actually have amazing voice acting!

Cons

Autosave sucks.
Relying on Stealth is a gamble.
There are still a handful of bugs and glitches.

Conclusion
Playing this game didn’t make me like RTS games. I am sure nothing can do that. But yeah, the game was enjoyable but I don’t see myself revisiting this title anytime soon. I hope they fix the current issues to give its players a better gameplay experience. In addition to this, I hope they release the next chapters soon. So, is the game worth its price? If the upcoming chapters would be free, then I would say that the game would be worth more than the asking price. Right now, I’d recommend trying to get it during a sale.
A very good strategy with RPG elements. Great plot, beautiful and living world. It's fun to play and, most importantly, it's interesting.
