Toro is a rare example of a game built around a subject that is both culturally specific and largely unexplored in the medium. Developed and published by Recotechnology S.L., it attempts to transform the traditions and spectacle of bullfighting into an interactive experience that blends elements of simulation with arcade-style scoring. The result is a game that stands out immediately for its premise, but one that ultimately struggles to translate that uniqueness into a consistently engaging experience. The core gameplay centers on stepping into the role of a matador, where success depends on timing, positioning, and the execution of stylized maneuvers designed to impress both the crowd and the scoring system. Each encounter unfolds as a controlled dance between player and bull, with the objective being not just survival, but performance. Players must read the bull’s movements, react accordingly, and chain together actions in a way that builds momentum and earns higher scores. In its best moments, the game captures a sense of rhythm, where each successful pass flows into the next, creating a brief but satisfying feeling of mastery. However, that sense of flow is often difficult to maintain. The mechanics themselves are relatively simple, and while they are easy to understand, they lack the depth needed to sustain long-term engagement. Matches tend to follow a predictable pattern, with little variation in how encounters unfold beyond incremental increases in difficulty. As a result, the experience can become repetitive fairly quickly, especially once the player has learned the core mechanics and there are few new elements introduced to expand on them. The game attempts to add variety through additional modes, including segments where players take control of the bull rather than the matador. These moments shift the perspective and introduce a more chaotic, reaction-based style of play, but they feel more like brief diversions than fully realized gameplay systems. While they provide a change of pace, they don’t significantly deepen the overall experience or address the underlying repetition present in the main mode. Visually, Toro aims for a semi-realistic presentation that reflects the traditional setting of bullfighting arenas. While the environments are recognizable and functional, the overall graphical quality feels dated, with stiff animations and limited detail reducing the sense of immersion. The audio design, including crowd reactions and ambient sounds, helps establish the atmosphere but doesn’t add much beyond basic context. Together, these elements create a presentation that is serviceable but lacks the polish needed to fully support the game’s concept. Control responsiveness is another area where the game shows inconsistency. Because the gameplay relies heavily on precise timing, any lack of fluidity becomes immediately noticeable. There are moments where actions don’t feel as responsive as they should, which can break the rhythm that the game is trying to establish. When the controls align with the player’s intent, the experience can feel smooth and engaging, but these moments are not always consistent enough to carry the game. An important aspect of Toro is its theme, which may influence how players approach the game. Bullfighting is a tradition with strong cultural roots but also significant controversy, and its inclusion as the central focus of the game means that player reception can vary widely. The game presents the activity in a stylized, less graphic way, but the underlying concept remains a defining element that may either intrigue or deter players depending on their perspective. Despite its shortcomings, there are glimpses of what Toro could have been with further refinement. The idea of translating a performance-based activity into a score-driven gameplay loop has potential, and the moments where timing, movement, and rhythm align can be genuinely enjoyable. However, these moments are not frequent enough to overcome the limitations in variety, depth, and technical execution. In the end, Toro is a game that relies heavily on its uniqueness but doesn’t fully capitalize on it. It offers a distinctive concept and a functional gameplay loop, but lacks the depth and polish needed to sustain interest over time. For players curious about its premise, it may provide a brief and unusual experience, but for most, it will likely feel like a missed opportunity rather than a fully realized vision. Rating: 6/10

Does not behave as expected when giving inputs. First launch did not recognize any inputs except the ESC key to skip intro. In the menu the mouse, keyboard and gamepad all produced no results. Disabling Steam Overlay and relaunching caused the main menu to fail to load after the intro.
This is a unique idea for a sports simulator. I don’t think this was ever with the resources this developer was working with it was every going to be “good,” but it still could have been a fun distraction. It sort of was, for a time, but… oof, the controls. I have no idea how you’re supposed to time your reactions. The first moves you unlock are easy enough to pull off, but then you have to account for the bull’s distance and angle of attack. It doesn’t feel consistent at all which direction or what distance you press the buttons from, there’s no feedback aside from it telling you when you get it right. It would be one thing if the moves were just hard to pull off, but they each have a different button combination. You’d think that would allow you to use any of them after you unlock them, but you can only assign four to your bullfighter at a time. Why have all of these different button combos you have to remember if you can only use four at a time? Let me use all the moves, or just simplify the controls so I don’t have to remember which button combos go with the moves I have equipped. You can’t stick with the same moves for convenience because you have to use newly unlocked moves to complete challenges on each stage in order to unlock more stages, not that you’d want to when the gameplay’s already so repetitive. Each stage is timed; they won’t end until you’ve waited through two three-minute timers. It’s excruciatingly dull when you’re just trying to hit the same combos over and over again on the same slow-moving bull, only occasionally interrupted by quicktime events, and they become even worse repeated over the course of career mode. Toro is just too unpolished and repetitive to have fun with. Even the ragdoll physics on the bullfighter are too stiff to get any enjoyment out of when you repeatedly get gored by the bull.
