picked it up on sale and for that it was Toadally awesome!
I love roguelikes, card builders and tactical games, but I really regretted buying this at the 3 hour mark. Opened up all the base stuff and metaprogression before even finishing one run. I usually play games like this until I at least play all the characters, but it was so grindy and repetitive before even finishing my first run that I couldn't bring myself to play again.
This game surprised me - I didn't have much expectation and it was a great experience.
I definitely wouldn't recommend to somebody new to the deckbuilding genre, however, I could totally recommend to a fan of deckbuilders who both a) has already played a few of the bests/most recognizable (Slay the Spire, Inscryption, M:tG) and b) doesn't mind a clunkier game, simply has the itch for the genre and enjoys exploring other's interpretations of it. I had fun playing for the most part! TotB has some really interesting mechanics I haven't seen elsewhere, has an interesting theme with good art direction, and the combo turn-based tactical with deckbuilding feels really unique. --It just needs a lot more work. Balancing gameplay, wording card & enemy mechanics in a more streamlined/understandable way, little bugs, and things simply left out. and of course more backstory would bring things together. Felt to me almost like a long-term game jam from a really talented team that just didn't have the ability to finish it or bring it where it would need to go to be great. It's good, fun, and looks good, but there's a learning curve to be able to enjoy it and there's almost no replay desire after you unlock all the playable characters because there's not enough variation (+ balance feels off), not a lotta story, and very few unlockables. Would absolutely come back to it if the devs picked it up again!
It's a very simple and easy turn based rogelike deck builder. There's a total of 3 unique characters you can play. They made a weird decision where the main antagonist, Baron Samedi, doesn't appear until you beat the game with each character, which feels counterintuitive. I hoped to fight him at the end of each run. The game has lots of bugs, featuring allies that can shoot the buildings you're supposed to protect, incosistent reward amount for each cleared room and enemies standing on the pieces of the map that shouldn't be traversible. Another oversight seems to be the fact that if you played the demo - you can't replay the tutorial in the full game anymore, which lock you out of an achievement. Perhaps I'm not smart enough, but I felt like there were a lot of cards and veves that feel completely useless compared to some others you can get. Some of the less effective ones can also cost more than they really should. The game seems yo be abandoned at this point. I loved the art and the music, the gameplay is simple and easy to understand. I liked playing it, the bugs can be navigated around, the game is easy enough that they don't disrupt your gameplay too much. It's a good effort and an enjoyable game, even if flawed. 6/10
Really nice Isometric deckbuilder rougelike. Very coherent design language throughout. Love da pixel art. 10/10
