I was concerned about the mixed review status, but am happy to say this is a fun game and the devs have addressed many of the concerns people previously noted in their negative reviews.
Its undercooked, gameplay and stability wise. The only upgradeable card i found on doberknight was the sword throw, theres no chart on interactions with terrain types, charms work on clicked tile basis. These and more feel like rough edges that would be fine if not for countless bugs. Sometimes game just doesnt do what the card says and sits there with a plank nailed to its forehead and SOMETIMES it does things witchout any reason! I had to sac my Fletch run cus on the final boss i had to restart the fight 3 times for 3 seperate reasons ranging from my turrets and sidekick dissapearing without trace, failing to place 1 turret and card getting glued to ui instead of playing it. The funnier bug i got was with the pyromancer, their oil cards and unstable explosions. Whatever i did it just crashed the game outright. It was fun at first, but i dont want 1 hour runs to be artificially stretched by semi-infinite loops of effects, sticky ui and other bugs. For now, bleh, i hope after patches it will be more manageable.
Did not care for the aesthetic at all, but that's personal taste. The game has some UI issues that need to be addressed: - If you want to know things like enemy ranges or how much damage they do, you need to click on each of them one at a time. - Getting to an upgrade shop for the first time? Choose a card to upgrade. What do the upgrades do? No way of knowing. Pick a card. - When you hover over a card to learn what it does, it might say something like "Gives you the recall card". What is the recall card? I need this information and information about potential upgrades to evaluate cards. - Click 4 times to mash open the lootbox. Click a 5th time by mistake and select the center option instantly if there was a choice.
Huge potential but too buggy to recommend at the moment. Although if you love turn based tactical roguelikes you might enjoy it enough anyway. Bugs encountered so far: 1. Hotkeys aren't disabled while sending feedback. 2. Recallable sword throw doesn't correctly swap to recall sword in some cases. 3. Hidden takedown doesn't gain bonus damage when there's highground between you and your target. 4. Some effects (such as poison and I think knockback) are applied even if your projectile is blocked by an obstacle. 5. Card got stuck as selected after use, softlocking the fight (can restart fights by going to the main menu). 6. Recall sword isn't damaging the boss that it's clearly passing through. 7. Whirlwind is displaying the wrong damage. Design choices I dislike: 1. Pathfinding doesn't take you around traps. 2. When npcs often have an option to buy another item from them they have a chance to give you nothing. 3. No way to speed up enemy turns. Things I love: 1. Reward variety from fights and in shops/events. 2. Combat feels strategic and satisfying. 3. Relics enable unique build options. 4. Sidekicks feel impactful and have their own unique playstyles. 5. Music (although it's a little repetitive).
Review as of 6 hours - if you're reading this and like slay the spire or tactics style games (think FF tactics or The Last Spell etc...) Stop reading this review and go buy this game immediately. Developer is really responsive, constantly updating and tweakign the game- game was unfairly review bombed early on. Of the latest indie purchases this has been my favorite. Great graphics, fun replayability, and lots to discover and unlock. Give it a shot!
Rough gem, but sadly unfinished & abondoned.
I searched for a long time for a turn-based strategy roguelike that would keep me hooked and challenged for longer than a month, and this is the one that got me!! I pretty much love everything about this game thus far except the difficulty seeing and clicking certain tiles when higher terrain/other characters/totems, etc. are blocking them from view, and how unnerving it can get when trying to play with a gamepad or the Steam Deck without a mouse. If the devs could add a way to rotate the battlefield or maybe have a way to toggle a bird's eye view it would solve a lot of frustrations. And there has got to be a better way to do controller input!! This has been one of my most satisfying purchases, and I'm looking forward to seeing even more content added to this perfect title!!
Overall a very fun game, but I wish steam had a neutral option. Tried the demo and had a blast, liked it so much I got it! Although, after playing it, it just isn't for me, and refunded it. It's a very good game, it just doesn't scratch that slay the spire, Wildfrost, or Deulyst 2 itch for me. No matter what though, try the demo! Pros: -Looks great! The pixel art is superb, and the stages look great. -Tons of strategy, you can upgrade card, find new ones, get charms -similar to Wildfrost- to equip to cards -Has a cool twist! You can find companions on your runs which are additional decks and Characters to pilot and customize. -Combat feels fun slicing through people. -They blended the best of the deck building and tactics genres into a great package. -They really nailed the good decisions that come up in positioning and playing cards from up to three characters hands. -No bugs! Okay's: -It's manageable on steam deck. It is just a little bit slow and janky to handle over a mouse, but otherwise it works fine. -Enemy interaction isn't to high. Most enemies don't make you think differently in approaching them, other than go close to hit, back away if charging up a telegraphed attack. Some enemies farther along do place traps for positioning, but other than that it isn't to much. -Shop UI feels a little cramped. Cons: -Combats feel slow. Maybe it's average for tactic games, but enemies seem to have either a bunch of health, or die in one hit. Even after beating a boss and having an upgraded deck, it still took around 5 normal attacks (on multiple turns) to beat an average enemy. -Tooltips and keywords aren't clear. Maybe this was just on steam deck, but they seemed very vague. -You can't see how an effect of applied charms, or upgrading a card would lead to. -Boss's seem poorly designed. The first boss I encountered was a night that had crazy amounts of shields, and could parry. "Parry what though?" I do not know. I took a lot of damage figuring out the hard way of if he could parry ranged attacks, or just melee, or how long it lasted. After I beat him, I made my way to a jungle boss. The jungle boss had three of them! It was three really high health spiders (With probably more health than the boss one knight). Once you beat them, they spawn the spider yet again with it's rider now also attacking you on foot. A double phase boss, that has a positive net health gain, and three of them! It's also bad that I was only able to deal around 1/10th of their hp on hit, while they damaged 1/5th of mine (per spider), so my poor healer wasn't able to keep up. Conclusion and TLDR: Overall, it's a very fun and polished game, it just isn't amazing. (Try out the demo though!)
Absolutely loving the game. If you like deckbuilding and/or tactics games, just play it. There's a free demo, try it now. I see some comments about game stability or bugs, perhaps they've already patched it, but played multiple runs already and haven't encountered a single problem with the game so far.
