unfortunately it's mediocre to the core. Tinytown is a strategic placement game that is basically Dorfromantik x Sim City, but unlike Dorfromantik, here's no satisfaction felt when you place a tile well, and a number of factors (need to build next to streets, 1 tile radius of effect, inability to see upcoming tiles) mean that strategy is both constantly encumbered and doesn't really matter as much as you wish it would. I just don't see why I wouldn't go play dorfromantik instead if I want to play a game about strategic tile placement. Extra note: There is NO WAY TO SAVE mid-run. Automatic or manual! in a puzzle game!!! that should be an instant deal breaker.
TLDR: What is this game? Well its a Tinytown building game like the title says. The objective is to fill the X by X grid with infrastructure and try to get the highest score by the end of it, the tricky part about it is that its what you get to lay down is randomly given to you, this is both a good and bad thing about the game. Its a short and simple game with each run lasting between 35-50min. On my first play-through I was able to get all the achievements in the game without even knowing what they where. There's much to be desired and i'd recommend putting on your own relaxing music as you play but for the low price tag I'd say fine. You are able to plan things out to a point and go for better scores each time you play. My review: Music: There's only two tracks and the main one you listen to while building your city is honestly just bad in my opinion, its supposed to be relaxing but its not and it doesn't sound good, if anything the title screen music would have fit better. I actually just muted it and put on my own music which worked better. Gameplay: The main game play loop involves you trying to plan ahead of where you want to put what and managing your score as it can be used as a re-roll if you get a object to place that you don't want, the higher your score is the steeper the price to re-roll will be which is a interesting mechanic that I like (I can't think of another game where you can use your score as a resource). The main things you get to play are houses, factory's, energy places, population places I.E parks and lastly streets which most of the building require you to build next to, they are the most important infrastructure. Different types of infrastructures also give you different points or extra points if placed near other building which goes to fill four separate meters (population, energy, industry, society) which when filled gives you a choice between 3 types of building that you would usually not be given. This all goes to make the game more strategic and makes you have to plan what you want to put down where. Issues: The problem with the game is the very thing that makes it strategic, the randomness. Most of the building you receive require you to build it next to a street, the problem is that it doesn't give you enough streets to put down, you have the re-roll option but you are not guaranteed to get a street, most times you'll just get something else that requires a street, so you'll have to bite the bullet and ruin your neat set up and put it somewhere unpleasant or just keep taking points from your score to re-roll. The random generation doesn't give you enough infrastructure that doesn't require a street and by the end of it most of your town will just be houses and factories. Some things I would change or add to the game includes: -A list (categorized) of all the building you can get or make by upgrading or putting next to each other. Even if the list blurs them out until you use/make them, it would go to make you plan more knowing what you can potentially put down and it would make the game longer by trying to fill out the log of different buildings. -Adding more ways to use your point score such as a shop, or a way to destroy or move buildings. All three of them could be available at all times or they could still be something given to you at random just like the buildings are, except they could cost some of your score to use. It is a puzzle/strategic game so this will give the player more options to think about without just giving them a free way fix mistakes, this could balance out the randomness and make it more fair. I think these option are especially important for if a placer accidentally places something down where they didn't mean to. -Some other things I would include are a leader board with at least 5 slots and an option to put a name on it, I think this could be a nice game for family or friends to play and try to out-due there scores. I would had more camera control I.E. being able to spin it 360, its a bit hard to see everything as you fill up the grid. I would add a few more tracks to pick from (Though this is a game id put my own music on when playing). Overall: Its a just game for its price and i'd play it every once in a while to beat my score. (Don't know why I went so hard reviewing this game, its my first steam game review so maybe that's why)
Super chill game, very fun to try and get a high score and plan out your town. For $3 it is really hard to go wrong with this game! Very aesthetic, if you have 30-40 mins you can complete a whole run. Some things I'd like to see: - Ability to rotate the camera on 90 degree intervals - At the end screen, let me take in my town and minimize the "score overlay"! - The pathing of the cars driving around the city seems to get a little wonky with more complex road formats, not a huge deal but just a note - Different size boards for various length games! (5x5, 10x10, custom size etc) - As you connect your town and get things running I'd like to see more animations or little details like "park has housing on all sides, little pixel people hang out in it or parking garage is connected, now cars park in it, etc - Some more buildings! Night club, coffee shop, school, department store, gym, etc? All in all, cute and relaxing game. Well worth the price! :)
There just isn't much here. It only took 20 minutes to see everything the game had to offer. The concept is good and I can see there being an audience for what it is. The game just isn't diverse enough to make the replayabilty fun.
Tinytown is a charming city-builder puzzle game. You have to plan ahead and think on your feet with your roads and tile orientation, lest you find yourself having to fork over those precious points you earned to re-roll the tile you just got. Once you know what you're doing, it shouldn't take too long to get the hang of the game, and you'll be building your tiny towns up in no time! The game is a calm, relaxing puzzle experience with satisfying controls, cute visuals, a great little soundtrack, and an overall cozy atmosphere. For an asking price of only $2.99, or less if it is on sale and/or part of a bundle, this game is well worth your consideration. Not only do I think you'll enjoy your time spent with it, but I also believe there is some great satisfaction to be found in supporting this fine work from an indie dev. I look forward to seeing more from this developer, and I highly recommend this game for purchase!
Very nice relaxing game , thank you !
Bit short. But Very enjoyable little charming game.
It's similar to Dorfromantik. You get randomly generated Tiles and you have to place them to get Points and build your Tiny cozy Town. It's relaxing and the Rounds are kept short. So you can play it to cool down from a soulslike or any other stressfull aktivity.
