I don't particulary like writing a negative review (in fact, it's the first one i'm doing) and I DON'T feel good about it, but this game kinda warrants it . First off , I have to preface i've been following this game on kickstarter for a few years now (i wasn't a backer, but i was still following updates from time to time) and let's just say... it has been a hell of a trip . I really REALLY don't want to think that's the case, but there's a part of me that feels like this whole game is kind of a scam , and i feel bad for the backers . The game has apparently been done for more than a year(!!), but was never released due to publisher hell . If that was all it was, i would believe it, but there has been such poor lack of communication in every update on what was really happening , leaving the game being supposedly "done" for the longest time and giving no real explanation and continuous weird excuses (like the dev wanting to add proper controller support , or fixing critical bugs ... things that took entire MONTHS to be done or be spoken about, despite the game being "done") It's just... it's hard to describe, the whole thing feels off . The main reason why i even mention all of this, is because now that i finally played the game ... It makes me seriously consider where the development time of this game has been put into... The writing is extremely barebones, every character talking like a robot (i don't want to say ChatGPT cause i still want to have faith) with most dialogues being very bland and with no emotion. No one screams, no one cries, no one is angry, it's simply "oh no where am i." "what is this place." "oh no. I am trapped." i'm exaggerating but it's really.. bad. Add to that the nonsensical story which i still have absolutely no clue even after the true ending what it was even all about , as it leans HEAVILY into psychological horror more than anything . It's one of those games where you have to analyse the few crumbs they give you to make sense of anything and it just doesn't pay off. At all. I couldn't care less about the characters (most of them looking very similar too) . The escape rooms have such varied quality , that it makes me question the development of this game even more . You start with Room 1 which is pretty basic but alright, then Room 2 is the biggest one with 3 different floors , all around a letter converter ... and then you expect Room 3 to be bigger but ... no it's actually even smaller than Room 1. What? Room 4 is also pretty fast (one of the puzzle was just BS) , and then Room 5 is normal-ish size. Honestly , 3,4 and 5 combined are pretty much the same length as 2, which feels weird . There's not even a true final puzzle, both endings are barebones and haven't much to it , everything feels rushed, disjointed. Some of the puzzles are kinda fun don't get me wrong, but there's a lot of just, getting an item to put it somewhere , to then get another item you put somewhere else . Half of the game is pretty much that . It's like the dev gave up halfway through... and even the game itself does ! Pretty much everything after the 2nd room goes so fast, There's like 10mins of gameplay between room 3 and 4 . The whole roulette concept is barely used (you see it spin one time only) , there's a few deaths but it's barely acknowledged and moved on immediatelt... The game even mentions challenge room 6 and 7 but it's not even in the game ! Halfway through the game the whole premise doesn't even matter anymore . The only positive i can say about thIs game is that the environments are very nice and clearly where all the budget went . I kinda wish this game would have been an horror game instead of ... this , as things turned really creepy and anxiety-inducing at times ! The environments are fantastic at making you feel dread , that i was hoping to see some jumpscare, chase sequence, or creepy monsters lurking around ... but I also knew very early on that it was never gonna happen . Don't let my playtime fool you (i afk'd the game) my actual total playtime was 7hours . Which is... Very VERY low considering the 15€ price tag, and that's with talking to ALL NPCs too (which none had interesting dialogue) so you can probably shave quite some time off that , even more if you don't get stuck on some puzzles like i did. So yeah... That's Thief Roulette . Again, there's a huge part of me that really, really, really, REALLY feels like the final product happened to be that way because of actual issues outside the dev's control, and that it was supposed to be much better ... but i still can't help to think deep inside me that this game is just a scam, and that the poor backers got robbed of their money . It truely breaks my heart, as i was really looking forward to this game over the years, but... yeah no, it's not worth it . I mean look at the store page description , It has barely anything in it... because there's sadly not much to talk about .

After the demo, I waited four years for the game to be released. Why? Because of the riddles and puzzles. They’re not too easy, but never impossible and that’s something I’ve been missing since my Zero Escape days. The story starts out really intriguing, and I hope it finishes the same way it began: with a banger. For the price, it’s absolutely worth it.
A mix of Danganronpa and zero escape vibes. Great setting and polish with attention to detail. Puzzles and a different way of thinking will get you through this game. Another perspective at things may help you through harder puzzles.
The puzzle design is good, the art style is appealing, the music if pleasant, and there are no game-breaking bugs aside from one challenge room which has a softlock. All that said, the story and characters are such massive pitfalls in comparison that I really struggle to recommend the game even with those other good aspects. Being a "killing game" type setup, there are 15 characters, including the player, and unfortunately almost none of them are anything close to memorable or fleshed-out. This isn't because the character concepts are bad, you just spend next to no time speaking to any of them at all. Even the optional dialogue sequences you can have with them are frustratingly short, oftentimes only a few sentences long and usually revealing only shadows of the character's actual personality. It felt frustrating to me when I was playing, as I was trying to get to know these characters better so I could be invested in them and care for them, but it felt like the game was just refusing me every time, trying to railroad me back onto the puzzles. The puzzles are good, but without time spend getting to know and care about the characters, a killing game setup fundamentally does not work. I felt nothing watching the brief cutscene in which a few characters die because I basically knew nothing about them despite being several challenges deep into the game. You don't even get to see the characters' reactions to their teammates being killed, and the cutscene it happens in is maybe 5 seconds long. It's practically a footnote. It should *matter*, but the story basically treats it like it doesn't, and if the story doesn't even treat its characters dying with any importance, why should I, as the audience, care? It feels very mismanaged. The overarching lore spread throughout the story is interesting but utterly impenetrable. Terms are thrown around and barely explained at best and not explained at all in most cases. Having gotten the game's true ending I can't even tell you more than, spoilers,
it was a simulation designed to test... something involving resistance to "The Mass". The people you were with might not have even been real, and the "girl" you spent the whole time trying to find was apparently just an invention of the simulation's creators to coax you into breaking free. A "it was all a simulation" twist can work, but when your characters are completely unexplored, the lore isn't explained properly, you spend the whole game being confused, and the singular driving force of the plot is revealed to have been made up, what exactly are you left with? Nothing, really.
There are a lot of good ideas here, I just really wish they were executed better. I don't think the game is beyond saving, but that would have to happen via a content update that alters and adds things in the middle of the game as it as, as opposed to tacking something on at the end as a "part 2". Side note, Kickstarting a project (which I backed, for whatever it's worth), developing it for nearly 8 years, and delivering a product with a story this poorly executed with a vague promise of a "part 2" later instead of delivering a finished product is, at minimum, in poor taste, even if done without malicious intent. I do genuinely believe there are a lot of good ideas here, but as it stands, the game needs a major rewrite, with a substantial amount of character-focused time inserted, ideally in-between challenges. I don't take too much issue with the level of dialogue that's present within the challenges themselves. Keeping it short and to the point there seems fine to me. But outside of that, there needs to be scenes where the characters actually talk to each other. Not optional 3 sentence monologues when you walk up to a character and press "1". Real, actual scenes that give me something to latch onto. Even without being given much, my curiosity is already piqued regarding many of these characters, their brief interactions leaving me wanting for more. The game is obviously inspired by Danganronpa, and while there doesn't need to be that degree of dialogue focus, there's a reason why I can remember the names of those games' casts and I can hardly remember the name of a single character from this one. There is material to work with here, the character concepts have enough fuel in them to start a fire, the developer just unfortunately decided not to light it. I hope they reconsider and try making the game better in response to my and many others' negative feedback. I would love to see it.
"You have all been chosen to play a game of Thief's Roulette." © Lady Luck
I don't understand what the point of this game really is. The death game aspect serves no purpose other than to bait fans of the genre into a painfully boring story. The true ending just made me annoyed since it felt like a lame justification that everything being bland and confusing is intentional. I had some fun with the puzzles despite getting stuck on some of the obtuse ones. They felt very reminiscent of the free point and click games you'd find on Newgrounds and endured because you had nothing better to play. I went into Thief's Roulette with no real expectations and in the end I'm just left with a feeling of apathy.
For the past few days I've wonder how I should go about it I was one of the people who did additional testing in 2024 and brought up some bugs that still showed up on release As other reviews have pointed out the story doesn't have much to it But the puzzles are fun I don't think that of intentionally did a "scam" I think they just overestimated their ability and all I can say is the game is alright a 3/5 so more of a yes then no but even I know that it's probably just me trying to justify the money I backed Hiro for your next game whatever it may be don't do crowd funding and just take your time, because even if i did enjoy my time with this I would not back another game from you sorry if i'm being too harsh I just know you can make a game better then this
Beautiful aesthetic and really well made escape rooms. There’s only 5 puzzle sections, but each has what I’d consider around 2 rooms worth of puzzles compared to games like ZE, so it doesn't feel super short. I somewhat cheated room 4 and used a guide for the final achievement but if I didn't I imagine there would be an additional hour or two to my playtime. The narrative is very dreamlike, and I can’t tell if the stilted and disjointed dialogue is purposefully supposed to invoke that or not but either way it does add to it. It’s in that weird spot between incoherence and genius where I can’t tell if I’m too dense for not being able to see what the author is going for, or if it’s just not that interesting. Without getting into spoilers, although I’ll give it some grace because it’s specifically not a visual novel and as such has more limitations in the narrative department, being a game clearly inspired and presenting as certain other games comes with expectations and this game significantly missed the mark on those for me.
tl;dr - It has some nice ideas, but feels poorly executed in both the storytelling and mechanical aspects of the game. 50% or more sale it might be worth a go if you enjoy the genre, otherwise just skip. Firstly I'd like to say that I want to recommend this game, but in its current state I can't justify the price tag. A game that was backed on kickstarter in 2018 to the tune of $13k has only just been released and has been riddled with bugs. 7+ years for this just feels disappointing. To the developer's credit he has been quick to fix bugs so far on release, but for a game that took so long to come out to feel akin to an early access release leaves a bitter taste in my mouth. The writing and characters fall extremely flat for the majority of the game. What could be a fascinating idea is completely marred by poor execution in its storytelling. You can make an argument that part of this is a stylistic choice but playing through the entire game (and the true ending) I have to say it just feels rushed and shallow. If more time and care was taken to flesh things out I think there would be a real story here but as it stands it's just a shallow fragmented story trying to rely on gimmicks to make you think more effort went into it than it actually has. The puzzle aspect of the game is, in places, well done. My only real gripe is a lot of the smaller puzzles feel very copy-pasted in nature, just there to pad out the room and with little thought put into them. Other puzzles were fairly interesting and thought provoking, some interesting ideas used to provoke thought in the player. And (spoiler warning)
I did enjoy the fact that puzzle solutions are dotted around the game if you are observant enough, as well as the true end and how you reach it.
I will say however I was disappointed that there were only 5 puzzle rooms, of the kickstarter campaign's advertised 7. The game runs very short (my save file had around 4 hours upon completion, with maybe another hour of actual gameplay spent messing with things afterwards) which feels awful combined with the other issues and the price tag. The UI feels very barebones and clunky, from the menus to the dialogues (and even the puzzle interfaces). I wish a little more time was spent polishing these things before pushing a release. The game really does feel like an early access game in its current state. And finally my thoughts that touch upon spoilers: Spoiler warning:
The true end does say that this was only Part 1, but this once again concerns me that after 7 years this is basically confirmation we've received an incomplete game. Will part 2 be a free update or another standalone game? If the former then perhaps I could forgive a lot of the shortcomings of this release but time will tell.
EDIT: now that they added 2 new achievements I'm even more mad, I don't want to spend my time doing a long negative review but come on, we know those achievements don't mean anything and you just want people to keep wasting time. Why make the game some sort of fake ARG instead of telling an actual story? Loved the puzzles and the way to get the true ending was really fun. But there is a very big problem with the story: The writing is disconnected, and I understand that it is on purpose, but I couldn’t for the life of me care for a single character and what happens to them, which I think it's a very big problem for a death game type of video game. We don't see any of the characters' fate after a round (aside from a single picture once), we don't see them get angry or sad or insane, they are just...there. I can only remember the actions of a single character towards the end of the game...and that's it. I finished the true ending and can't say anything about the story without talking about spoilers but I also can't talk about it because of how messy it is by nature.
