Takes ten minutes to play through this "exploration adventure game", but that description is misleading. There is one room with some objects - spread intentionally far apart requiring a few minutes to reach each one. Clicking on them provides a Steam Achievement. You listen to some no-cost, Creative Commons licensed music, while you look at the very simple, no-cost, Unity Engine terrain assets. This same type of experience could have easily been found on the itch.io website of prototype games, as a student's learning exercise. Now while I understand new solo developers have got to start somewhere, I bought this game, although inexpensive, based on the positive steam reviews. I feel compelled to leave my own, contradictory opinion.
7th Chance managed to keep me engaged and entertained but it did leave me wanting more and not in a good way. The game has an interesting premise that after waking to your tent crushed and you needing to find help you come across your house where it shouldn’t be and then explore the surrounding area. You find a variety of objects and can make a choice on what to do with them. Once you complete all that you find out your fate. The objects are meant to point to past events in your life and how they influenced your present. It’s a great concept but for some of them they lack context. For instance I can either take money or burn it. Without knowing the story of the money why on Earth would I burn it ? The default assumption is that it is somehow “dirty” money but with no context to go on that’s just an assumption. If you find random piles of money on the street would you burn it ? Getting past that I would say that I liked how the game handled things in a subtle manner. You can figure out where to go without a map because you can follow markers and when you’ve interacted with everything a bell sounds so you’re never left wondering what to do next. This is key as the game has no map; no objective list; etc but that’s not a negative with how things are handled. I thought the visuals were interesting. They were low detail but had a good art style so I didn’t mind. The music was good but a bit repetitive. I played 7th Chance on Linux. It never crashed and I didn’t notice any bugs or spelling errors. You can’t save but it is a short game. Alt-Tab didn’t work. There are two graphics settings and a resolution option. Performance was good but I felt at times it was using more system resources than the graphical detail warranted. For instance it used as much system RAM and GPU usage as Shadow of the Tomb Raider but looked nowhere near as good. That being said the frame rate was always above 60 so it didn’t matter much. Game Engine: Unity Graphics API: Vulkan Disk Space Used: 352 MB Game Settings Used: High; 1920x1080 GPU Usage: 61-100 % VRAM Usage: 1049-1086 MB CPU Usage: 16-36 % RAM Usage: 4.1-6.9 GB Frame Rate: 61-144 FPS Overall I enjoyed 7th Chance. While it could have used more depth what I did get told a good story with what time it had. I finished the game in twenty minutes and paid $1.93 CAD for it so the value is fair. If you enjoy walking simulators you should check this out, it’s not the best in the genre but it’s solid and worth twenty minutes of your time. Je joue sur Linux. Version Linux : injouable.
Hardware : 5950x, Nvidia 3080Ti, 64GB ram. Screens : Dualscreen, 1x 4K & 1x 1920x1200, un seul screen X.
An.... overly-simplified approach to a very complex, and dark topic. Pros: * Beautiful music. * Good example of minimalist game design. Cons: * The vices displayed here are... not as simple as the game implies. Neither in source, nor in obtaining a lasting resolution. * eg: A choice between a wife's picture or naughty (pixelated) photos. Maybe there was a reason the wife wasn't a good match? Not that she was a bad person, but she had very different needs from the main character. * eg: "Nope, not being an alcoholic anymore!" - from personal experience, it's never that simple. * eg: "Keep the dirty money or burn it" - um, maybe use it to fix whatever the fallout was on that dirty deal? ...and so on. Meh: * Short - only ~15 min per playthrough, for each of the two endings - but only $2. TL;DR: I applaud the author's desire to broach a difficult topic, but this was too naive a take on the subject matter to be worth playing.
Not really worth the time.
A nice concept for a game. I would have liked to seen it drawn out and for the concepts to go into more depth.
A different and deep concept if you really dive into it. Really loved the atmosphere as well as the music but I wish the gameplay should have been a bit longer than it was. Nevertheless, a fun experience overall. 9/10
An interesting short story, not too hard to 100% The story is pretty deep going if you really look at it, has a good ending too! Absolutely a small gem you should have in your library. Don't have much else to say about it. The graphics are actually pretty nice. The atmosphere is really sweet. Just make sure to lower your audio in the settings before going into the game because even with me lowering audio, it really was loud in game.
