About
Garrett, the Master Thief, steps out of the shadows into the City. In this treacherous place, where the Baron’s Watch spreads a rising tide of fear and oppression, his skills are the only things he can trust. Even the most cautious citizens and their best-guarded possessions are not safe from his reach.
As an uprising emerges, Garrett finds himself entangled in growing layers of conflict. Lead by Orion, the voice of the people, the tyrannized citizens will do everything they can to claim back the City from the Baron’s grasp. The revolution is inevitable. A stealth-focused adventure that rewards patience, clever planning, and careful exploration. Sneaking through the shadows as Garrett is satisfying, and the dark atmosphere captures the spirit of a master thief. While it delivers tense stealth gameplay, it doesn't always live up to the legacy of the series. + Immersive stealth mechanics and atmospheric world + Excellent level design with multiple paths to explore – Story is forgettable and characters lack depth – Some gameplay mechanics feel outdated and repetitive 7.5/10 – A good stealth game, but not the masterpiece it could have been.
I cannot give it a negative review for what it is, since overall it's a proper game. As long as you condition yourself to clear levels only by stealth – and I assume that's the way it's meant to be played – the experience is complete. You study the enemy, plan the route, wait for your moment, use the environment, move silently, and grab everything you can along the way. And while it works in the beginning, where the challenge is still fearly managable for a smooth and clean playthrough, in the later levels… the complexity needed for achieving this kind of a run becomes just too much. The locations get bigger and bigger, the enemies are plentiful, the alarm triggers get scattered all over your path, and you end up being just simply… painfully slowed down and wary of literally EVERYTHING. Is it worthy of a master thief? Yes. Is it fun as a video game meant for fun and relaxation? No. And, as I'm assuming many players did, you end up just killing or stunning everyone, since it's easier and faster. And boring. But not much less boring than sitting in dark corners for minutes studying enemy patrols and their lines of sight, looking for noisy crows, sniffing dogs, scattered glass, traps, holes, places for takedowns, etc. The game also has this action adventure dark fantasy background which… kind of… takes over. Somewhere along the way you lose the feeling of being simply a thief, and instead you become this dark knight who tries to save the city from monsters. It seems actually weird, picking up coins and jewellery from behind the backs of horror mutant creatures while the city is dying and turning into a nightmare… Makes you think: "What is wrong with you, Garret?" So, yeah… it's all good, as long as you want a "chore" of a stealth game (with, eh… monsters), but if you just want to move smoothly in the shadows of the night, speed through rooftops, rob some folks while they're busy reading, occasionally move past some guards – you WILL GET that through the first half of the game, and then… it's "go get them, tiger".
I found the game exceptionally tedious. The story telling is legitimately appalling: none of the characters are truly memorable nor have any development beyond their generic role, and many drop in and out of the story arbitrarily - the thief taker general is a perfect example; the general backdrop is never really given any life or presence, with areas like the main square where hangings/speeches occur having at most 2 people; finally, you NEVER have clarification for what happens to who after you see them last, or even exactly what happened to yourself before the game properly started. It's all incredibly frustrating and, in the end, boring. The gameplay loop is dull and repetitive, the level design is so bland and unclear that I regularly doubled back on myself on accident trying to find where on earth I actually had to be going, and the stealth system is so imprecise, unreliable and irregular that you can't reliably stay hidden. If you're going for ghost gameplay, you'll spend 30 minutes repeating the same hallway because the hyperreactive guards block it in just the right way that you can't pass it without being detected. The beginning of the game seemed reasonably well polished and interesting. The middle became repetitive and the story didn't go anywhere, but it was still a stealth looting game. Suddenly, it becomes a horror game briefly in the Asylum (which, while jarring and not matching the theme, I realise ironically was probably one of the more fun levels), spirals into nonsensical story and chaotic levels that are painful to traverse, and ends in an unsatisfying climax that's just... bad. I recommend knocking people out, or even killing them if you like, flat ignoring ghost gameplay. It truly just drags out the experience with no gain other than a small congrats at the end of the level and maybe some minimal extra money, which you likely wont spend anyway beyond the initial upgrades. Overall verdict: Play Dishonored.
The story is garbage. the characters are garbage. As a thief game, its garbage. The gameplay loop is fun though. I like picking up shiny things. its an acceptable game, but don't buy it full price.
I've played the old thief games as well but the only one I liked was Deadly Shadows. I've played this way to much and should probably seek help. The game gets a lot of hate but I've found it very enjoyable trying to get all the achievements.
Even though this game is heavily inspired by Dishonored, it doesn't come anywhere near its perfection. The open world itself, the level design, and the mechanics feel so robotic and rigid that the game just doesn't flow. You constantly feel like you're being restricted by something. At times, the game feels suffocating. Instead of playing this, just play Dishonored for a second time; you'll enjoy it much more.
