Wonderful game, make sure to buy it now before it gets delisted and re-priced for $30

Good classic game. Seems to work on steadeck.
I really wanted to like Thief, I really did, but unfortunately there are too many things that add up resulting in a confused experience. There were moments Thief amazed me, especially considering its age. The music, cutscenes, the clockpunk aesthetic, atmosphere and voice of Garrett done by Stephen Russell are all superbly done. The core gameplay and all the tools you can use to your advantage are all really clever. All the different arrow variants like the rope arrows letting you climb places you would otherwise not reach or water arrows letting you extinguish torches. Sword combat is surprisingly developed considering direct combat is usually discouraged. I love the way the game treats difficulty, adding more objectives instead of making enemies more spongey. Every mission shows you the objectives up front (there are a couple exceptions) and lets you decrease or increase the difficulty. I'm not a massive fan of stealth games, particularly games that treat killing guards as mission failure so I would lower the difficulty until the game would let me. Unfortunately all of the positives mentioned above did not make up for the things I did not like about the game. My biggest issue with the game are most of the maps that lean heavily into the fantasy aspect of the game. There are so many levels where you are killing monsters and sure it shakes up the gameplay, but not in a way I found enjoyable. The Gold edition of the game makes changes to the original release and adds extra maps. 2 out of the 3 maps added are terrible, the only one I liked was Song of the Caverns. The Mage Towers is a drag, but the biggest offender of them all has to be the Thieves' Guild. I like that they wanted to expand on Garrett's story, but what the actual f*ck were they thinking when designing the mission. You are helplessly wandering around a maze-like sewer for what feels like hours. Absolutely terrible. I'm not playing Thief because I want to get lost in a cave, killing big dinosaurs or use holy water on zombies to make them explode in a haunted castle filled with ghosts. I am playing Thief to get immersed and rob a giant mansion with clever use of all of the unique equipment while finding hidden stashes of loot. From what I've heard Thief II leans more into the clockpunk aesthetic of the first game and less into the fantasy aspects which sounds more like what I would enjoy. Some of the levels are almost pitch dark at times, so to try and combat that I tried the Thief Lantern Mod by Jax64. It didn't honestly help much because it just creates a small circle of light around your character. I also downloaded Thief Gold subtitles patch from RobinG because it was almost impossible to make out what certain characters were saying. Use PCGamingWiki as a resource. It is undeniable that Thief innovated and pushed the stealth genre of games to extents that are still felt today. So even if the game didn't work entirely for me any big fan of stealth based games would be doing themselves a massive disservice to not experience what Thief has to offer. A day before I finished the game Nightdive Studios announced a remaster of Thief: The Dark Project. They will probably delist Thief Gold like they did with Blood Fresh Supply once the new version comes out. Knowing Nightdive they will almost certainly improve upon the experience and make it a better version. I guess that makes this review obsolete ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
stealth classic and immersive sim classic 10/10 recommend
Overall really great stealth/adventure experience with an incredible and singular atmosphere. But with some minor flaws on level direction. Playing as Garret, a cynical man, but a master in the art of thievery, you will sneak and blend into the shadow to rob the wealthiest for... yourself.
Ambience/Settings
Probably one of the best thing in the game, it's the ambience and settings around it. The world is set into a dark industrial medieval city called The City mixed with some mysticism aspect later on. The audio environment is excellent and giving an overall unstelling and daunting vibe. A mix of industrial, dark fantasy, and monastery vibe. In addition of that, each mission has a very stylish cinematic briefing with great music and excellent voice acting (Garret voice actor is amazing) The ambience is really singular and I've never seen another game with the atmosphere, really good on that side!
Stealth
What would be a game about thievery without stealth! The game put a huge emphasis on lighting and sounds. And it make you feel like a... thief, always trying to stick in the shadows, listening to guard footsteps to localize them, watch your own steps too and avoiding making too much noises depending on the floor you walk on etc. And with a good amount of tool at your disposal to remove light with water arrow, moss arrow to turn the floor into a quiet and smooth material etc. I also like the lockpicking system, it's different from other game, but it's cool and kinda similar to how it works in real. It's fun to time the guard pathing, stun and hide the bodies, remove all light to be in complete shadows, pickpocketing their keys, find available routes to take for your objectives...
Levels
The game is made of several levels, with 3 different difficulty, with a preparation phase that explain your main objective and stuff you wanna buy for your mission. Difficulty integration is original, instead of having the classic stats modifier stuff, each difficulty on each map will give you more objectives to do that will change the approach of the missions. And it's where the flaws happen, the levels can be hit or miss for some. The levels swap between stealth/thievery mission and crypt looting, Tomb Raider-esque missions. So for those who want a fully stealth game, it can be frustrating. For my personal experience, I loved the tomb raiding mission, they have a really great atmosphere and give a bit of fresh air. But the last missions have a strange "offensive/combat" direction, and that's strange for game built around sneaking, and the melee fightning is probably the worst part of the game (it's not bad either but meh), so those missions seems to be counter-intuitive in their design.
Conclusion
Despite the mission inconsistency, it's a really geat game with excellent atmosphere and a great stealth system that I would recommend to at least try it! it's an old game with some rough edges, but with a amazing atmosphere and creativity. it's also a game that had a huge impact on video game history (like almost any games from Looking Glass). On a side note: As usual for almost any old games, it can be a pain in the ass to make it playable on modern hardware. From what I heard the GOG version works better, but for Steam version I used roguepatcher (with modern keybinding included) and it works flawlessly after the patch. GOG is planing to add it into their reservation program soon if you prefer to wait and avoid patching stuff (and a remastered version from Nightdive is coming this year)
Amazing, a masterpiece of atmosphere and immersive stealth. It's crazy to see while playing how this game laid the foundations for mechanics that are used in dozens of games today. Yeah, sure, it has its ups and downs. Some missions are legendary, some are quite forgettable. But on the whole, it's a must play classic.
A classic game becomes an epic frustration on modern systems. Fix this, remake this, remaster this, something please!
In awe that I spent so long unfamiliar with these games. An unraveling of religious cults based on pagan trickster figures, a sect focusing on industrial progress following the tenets of a godlike figure called the builder, a clandestine group of assassins that control the city and its elite from the shadows, piecing together parts from this bible that every mission opens w/ surreal excerpts from; steampunk gothic architecture with an incredible, industrial soundtrack. And mechanically it is perfect, simulating all of your tool and leading to such incredibly emergent gameplay. Very excited to check out the rest of the looking glass games :)
