Missing basic features like the ability to pause or save; no ability to recheck objectives, unclear objectives (couldn't even get any of the spooky stuff to trigger), poorly placed interaction triggers, jiggly lighting, and poor modeling. In short, this isn't worth money. This is a student project that ought to have been put up for free.
This game was dope. If you never check out Trial by Fire, pick this game up. They Look Like People is a short and clean narrative with a nice little twist. I wish it went on a little longer, maybe we can get a sequel? Call it We look like people lol. Worth the couple of bucks. I also made a video on it if you are interested. I found a couple bugs but I go out of my way to try and break games just to see what mischief I can do. https://youtu.be/sz0h057b-wc
I've never given a bad review and I give games the benefit of the doubt if they are flawed. I didn't expect much for £0.79 (I got this in the sale) so I went in with an open mind. It was alright at first, but i got bored of the bland environment really quickly as music didn't even accompany my journey. Things just started to get interesting as I was being treated to some story, and then...my character just started walking by himself, totally taking me out of the experience and caused me to fall in some kind of void below the level. It was a weird glitch and it wasn't intentional. It's quite a mess. I just saw that the price of this game is £3.99 when it's not on during a sale. Save that money for something else. I wasn't interested in giving it at third chance, so I opted for a refund and got my 79 pence back. The scariest thing about this game is the fact it will forever haunt my play history on my Steam profile.
Great game with fantastic atmosphere and visuals that make this old guy nostalgic. Immersive, story driven gameplay that has a few twists you don't expect. My full playthrough: https://youtu.be/AOY6QGGYiAQ
Pretty cool, kinda boring as well. There are a few bugs including doors not opening properly all the time. This is a school project and it does a good job and the price is low. Also quite experimental and minimal.
I really enjoyed playing this game XD. I had a blast playing it :) Keep up the good Work Buddy :) Look Forward to seeing More from you :)
Not recommended. It's not a bad small yarn but the implementation leaves much to be desired. For starters, this game is horrendously ugly. And this isn't just an aesthetic choice the developer made that I disagree with, the color scheme is beyond jarring. This is fine during the more surreal moments but I can't believe any spaceship would ever line their walls with a bright red that is so all-consuming. Pushing by this, the dialogue to relay the story is delivered hamfistedly as well. I found the flashback early on in which you talk to your astronaut father (who is just chilling at home on the couch, in a full spacesuit!) to be unintentionally hilarious. I'm telling my dad I've become an astronaut and he basically reacts disgustedly and tells me he'll never be proud of me until I make something of myself(!), it threw me for such a loop I couldn't help but laugh. And that put me right out of the experience and I couldn't take the rest of it seriously. I also got stuck on a spacesuit for a time but thankfully was able to wriggle myself free. It was about 20 minutes in and before I got free I was contemplating the thought of having to restart and I didn't know whether I could do it. When you feel that way after only 20 minutes you realise you're not enjoying the experience. It ends shortly after this and resolves the story with at least a conclusion. But the game really goes out of its way to make you despise the character you're playing. An odd artistic choice but I'll allow it. Overall, I would avoid.
Longer Review For Us Snobs :')
In Short: It's an alright game with some strong points, but not worth 5 dollars. In Long: The visuals are short and sweet, the soundtrack works very well for the game. At the same time, the gameplay isn't too interesting and the voice acting is pretty average (It didn't have too much emotion put into it, but whatever) The main issue I have with this game is the plot. At first, it seems to focus on a toxic enviroment and how it leads to depression and self-loathing (It's very "on the nose" about this, and makes the main character a emo teenager :P ) But then it uses these traits to turn the main character into a selfish jerk? Yes, depression does not equal you can be a bad boy, but it makes people have a lot of irrational thoughts. I just don't know what the plot is necessarily aiming for. Is it meant to be about the effects of depression, or is it about how humans are rooted in selfishness and greed and that is just how humans act normally? I don't know, and the plot isn't really fleshed-out (since like it says, it is a pretty short game) While I do love you Aaron <3, the only reason I don't recommend this game is the fact that it is 5 dollars (I got it on sale though). I do like supporting indie developers, but I also don't like the trend of pretty much every horror game being $5. There are a lot of strong things going for this game (I know I criticized the plot a lot), such as the soundtrack and graphics. But I really do think the price tag is a bit too high. That being said, it's a good starting point! It's better than Poppy Playtime (which is already an overpriced game), and there are a lot of good things that are part of this. I just think that making the price to around $1-2 would make is more available to a lot of people (but then again, I don't do game developing for a living, so maybe $5 is a good price?)
This game is an adaption of a story by Paul Dini, Stephen Langford and Greg Nicotero which I unfortunately already knew, so the twists and turns did not really wow me as they would an assuming player (and I think this will be a great story to unfold for everyone who doesn't know the source material). I do think this is a nice experience with a few things that could be optimized such as reducing the walking a little (it’s A LOT) and adding a few more conversations and notes to get to know the characters and their dynamics a little better. As it is, it felt a bit rushed at times and slow at others (like, when you had to walk somewhere, did I mention that it was a lot?). So, all in all, a nice experience and I don’t regret the 4 bucks I spent for it (support your indie devs) but it could have been better with more space for character development, build-up and world building. Buy on sale! They Look Like People is a walking sim, and a post-modernist riff on existentialist sci-fi fiction among the likes of 2001, Prometheus, and the more philosophical side of Star Trek. TLLP trades out the fear of the future found in the genre for the millenial's greatest fear: 'What if all the great things to do have been done? What becomes of an exceptionalist society if noone is truly exceptional? What if my dad's cooler than me as I am now or ever will be?' The games direction is really NICE and its a NICE little snack to play if you're looking to kill an hour or so. The game takes 30 minutes to play but I had not one, not two, but THREE crashes over my course of play. But that's more the fault of the piss poor unreal engine unable to handle lighting effects. Overall key points : Looks good, 30 minute Walking Sim, Game Crashes.
