Game by itself is fun, but it keeps crashing and crashing...impossible to play. While developers wont patch it, i suggest to use "Green Steam".
good
T.A.B. is the most satisfying base-builder game I have found in a while. The gameplay is smooth and challenging, just be aware that things can go wrong very quickly. My only real critique is that the tech tree, feels pretty set in stone. There is a little bit of variation for personal preference but at the higher difficulties there is only 2 maybe 3 tech builds that make things smooth.
Great game and probably my favorite of the tower defence/rts hybrid genera. I agree with others that it is very challenging at times and that a minor mistake like letting one aspect of your economy stagnate, especially on higher difficulties, can doom your mission and if you are not smart with your research upgrades, you can get somewhat softlocked in the campaign. I don't think this is a bad thing. The game requires mastery of it's systems to succeed at higher levels which is exactly how it should be. I don't think the game is unfair, just difficult. I like that missions offer variety in types of chokepoints, types of resources present on the map, and scarcity of said resources. Each mission feels different and requires some different levels of problem solving. All of that is true for the normal missions and the horde missions however, I have huge gripes with the hero missions. They would be fine albeit kind of a slog no matter what but the controls make them unnecessarily frustrating. you target enemies by letting your hero auto target nearby enemies but there is a glitch/feature, where you can get them to shoot significantly faster if you time your clicks to manually target enemies. This incentivizes using this glitch/feature which then makes it very easy to mis-click and send your hero into a group of enemies instead of clicking on them to target since both commands are accomplished with the same mouse click. Pathfinding exasperates that problem because if you misclick into a group, your hero might get stuck and won't pathfind around even a single enemy at times. This would be less of an issue if losing a mission didn't reduce the score you get at the end and if those missions weren't so long and grindy. When you die in a cheap way, it stops feeling like a challenging game and starts feeling like a poorly designed slog. I think the game design just doesn't lend itself to to the hero missions. Having to micro a single unit (sometimes you have allies, there should be more of this...) and usually needing to retreat, pop off some shots at a group, retreat again, rinse and repeat, is not good gameplay on top of the frustrating controls and very slow and incremental hero upgrades making it even worse and unnecessarily grindy. This is only true for the hero missions! I think the rest of the game hard but fair. My only other gripes are minor. The voice drops every freaking time you click a unit or give it an order is extremely annoying and forces me to turn the voice volume down which is suboptimal. I also think the steampunk art design is kind of cringe at times but I just don't like steampunk which is totally subjective so I'm not going to knock the game too hard for that since it is well executed and the artists clearly have talent. This reads like a negative review but it's not. I consider it an indy classic and I think any fan of RTS or tower defense would enjoy this challenging but (mostly) fair game. The hero missions are a bruise on an otherwise delicious apple. Edit: The hero missions are truly AWFUL because of some of the gameplay choices. The tedious game of eye spy you have to play to find all the items is absurd. For the love of god, these missions should be made optional for replayability reasons. They are an annoying slog in an otherwise amazing campaign.
i put off buying this waiting for the price to drop. very well built, surprisingly difficult yet approachable. the lack of save states will probably frustrate a few given that most later missions are nearly 1-1.5 hours and re-creating the same basic colony is boring. not sure if ill replay at higher difficulties as its pretty tedious but overall a really great game. definitely worth the purchase!
