"Less is more". The Witness doesn't really care about the way you solve it, or if you want to solve it at all. Even calling The Witness "solvable" feels like a stretch. There are in total more than 600 puzzles for you to solve, some are hidden by a resolving order, others hidden on panels far away from the meat and bones of each sector. Some, even, are purposely hidden in plain sight, blending with the structures surrounding you. There are few things to "unlock", you can go pretty much everywhere as long as you open the first gate, that acts as a tutorial. Each zone has tutorials, in fact, for new or recurring mechanics scattered through the whole map. There is a lot of back and forth, and a lot of frustration for some. You are completely alone, with only your understanding (and maybe some forums) to help you accomplish what you want to achieve in this game. A lot of nooks and crannies are polished to a masterful degree, perspective and creativity shines in every detail, and the almost nonexistent lore, as far as it goes, is okay. The Witness is here to make you think. The game is not about puzzles, it's about how far you are able to create theories, explaining concepts without concrete answers, finding a road, a goal, something satisfying enough for you to keep playing. You won't get a "congratulations" screen at the end, that's the point. This doesn't make sense in a game with such levels of freedom. Except for some details, everything is already here when you start the game, you're just not aware of it. It's brilliant, every puzzle maker dreams of achieving this, but in The Witness, it's the only thing that you can see. It can quickly become overwhelming. The pillars, the lasers, the puzzles, it's all about the worth that you give them. It's all about the things that make you keep solving them. It's beautiful, yes, but it's like a mirror : it will make you question yourself if you do not find the will to continue. I wanted to keep playing to finish the game, but I didn't find any joy in "solving" the game. I quit trying at some point in both of my runs, many times. I stayed because I was hoping something would happen, but nothing I would label as "rewarding" came. It made me think about myself, mainly about my experience with this game. It's these thoughs about what ideas the game conveyed, and more importantly its execution, that made me stay. I solved every puzzle except three unknown ones. I'm fine with that, I'm done. The self-reflection was pleasant, and I appreciated the idea of not keeping the player busy to let him think about what the game has to offer. It's also damn expensive and is only worth buying on sales.
What an incredible way to waste time and feel completely unfulfilled.
Not a game for everyone, but a game that I will always recommend to anyone. First played this game as a teen, maybe 14 or 15. I was, honestly, pretty bad at it, and, in my naivety, spoiled some solutions off youtube playthroughs. I obviously felt ashamed at myself and deleted the game, promising to never touch it again until the time was right. Now, over 6 years later, I have forgotten almost everything, bought the game when I saw it on sale and played through the whole thing, no hints, no guides, no help. Just me against maze puzzles. What surprised me most weren't the puzzles (although the epiphany moments always had me giddy), but the narrative style the game presented. Took me almost 10 hours of gameplay to stumble upon my first voice recording and I think that was intentional too. That's one of the few *awesome* qualities of this game: everything feels intentional despite how natural everything looks. The environment is carefully designed to guide you as a player such that you are still able to make the choices you want. And oh how pretty the environment is. I would genuinely recommend to sit through and pay attention not only to the puzzles and mind games, but the rest of what the game offers. Every little hidden thing that makes you lament has something of value to offer, even if not to the progress of the game. That's what makes this game *awesome*. :)
The Witness меня затянула. Для The Witness это 10/10.
The game that got me hooked on puzzle games. Practically endless variations on the same basic puzzle which gives a really meaningful sense of progression and mastery over the game. The visuals are really nice too.
This game goes for quantity over quality, the puzzles are all pretty similar, but hey there's 523 of them so there you go. I called it quits out of sheer boredom after completing 250 of them. The vast majority of the puzzles have nothing to do with the environment, so the 3D first person setting serves as little more than a fancy background for an otherwise boring maze puzzle game. Some of my favorite games are puzzle games (Talos Principle, Antichamber, Manifold Garden, Portal) all of which have extremely creative puzzles and didn't feel repetitive to me. I got bored pretty quickly with the puzzles in this game.
