Warning: Broken Game! This game has design/implementation defects that will render this unplayable for many gamers. There's no working exit button for the game menu and no options to change the controls beyond console peasant inputs, yet the developer does not incidate use of a console peasant children's toy controller is needed to play this shoddy console port.
Glancing at the marketing materials for Watchmaker and you could easily be fooled into thinking this is a game you want. A third person steampunk (Steampunk is when goths discover the colour brown) puzzle adventure game where you're aging rapidly and you need to explore and solve puzzles fast... that could work, right? Not this time... this is such a bad, lazy console port that the game doesn't even work and can't be played unless you plug in a console peasant kiddies toy controller... nothing works properly unless you do, but the developer didn't put the mandatory "controller required" warning on the store. They also know about this problem but simply refused to fix it... this 8 year old Xbox port hasn't been patched in 4 years... it's abandoned. But they still want your money! From a technical perspective, the game doesn't meet basic minimum requirements that most PC gamers expect as standard. Because this is designed for consoles, it carries a number of deliberate design deficiencies. Compromises were made to cater to the inferior console gaming appliances that the game was designed for. These are unfortunate compromises and limitations that PC gamers shouldn't be forced to accept, but it's evident that PC was a second thought for the console-centric developers. The game is deficient as a result of these choices, and would have been so much better without the handicaps that designing games for consoles forces upon a game. Once more, console peasants have made gaming worse for everyone. Due to the age of this game, and the lack of modernisation, the graphics appear quite dated. This compares poorly to more contemporary games with professional standards. Given that gaming is primarily a visual medium, this is a bit of a problem, so should be taken into account when considering whether to get this game. There's no option to change the resolution and no useful graphics tweaks. There's no way to ensure this is running at the native resolution of your display. There's no guarantee this game will look right on any PC as a result of this hamfisted design decision. The controls can't be customised (at least using mouse and keyboard), which will be an annoyance for many, but it can also render the game unplayable for differently-abled gamers, left handed gamers or gamers using AZERTY or other international keyboard layouts. PC gamers will be insulted by the presence of console peasant children's toy controller prompts, despite this being on PC. Developers should try to be aware which platform they're developing for. Those technical flaws drag this game well below the minimum quality standards expected of a modern PC game. The poor quality of this game is reflected by how many people spent time with it. At the time of this review, SteamDB shows the all-time peak player number was only 6 players. This is a remarkably low number, and now, the only player activity occurs once or twice a month, presumably someone loading it up to see what it is then quickly uninstalling it. Considering there's over 130 million gamers on Steam and well over 140,000 games for gamers to choose from, the overwhelming lack of interest in this low quality game is to be expected. Unethically, the developers have left this on the Steam store in an unplayable and broken state. It's the responsibility of the developer to maintain their product, ensure it runs on all modern PCs, or if they determine there's defects and the game doesn't work, they should remove it from sale instead of misleadingly trying to scam gamers into buying knowingly defective products. This is harmful to Steam and to gamers, not just because it's a direct and intentional attempt to scam people, but because it takes a share of the marketing space and visibility away from other games. It's polluting Steam and making it harder for gamers to find genuine games and for genuine indie developers who put months or years into making proper games find an audience. Now on to pricing and value for gamers. So, should you buy this game? Is this one of the best of the 140,000+ games on Steam? The developer is deliberately and unethically trying to scam gamers into paying them the almost scam-like price of $10 USD for a game they know is broken. Don't give it to them. Developers must decide to either maintain their game, or if it's broken, like this, remove it from Steam when they have no intention of correcting their mistakes.
UPDATE:
The current "Ultimate" version is still BROKEN and ABANDONED BUT there is a workaround to fix it and be able to actually finish it, if you're curious to try it or you can't refund anymore. You need to download an older version and replace the current one with it. It will involve opening the Steam console and use the respective code from depot id to get it. There are several tutorials on Youtube if you want more details. Despite the fix the game is not really worth the trouble anyway, even on a sale. It is still janky, the writing of the dialogue is kinda weird and the puzzles don't take advantage of the time powers enough.
Amazing game but glitches make it borderline unplayable edit: Just had to restart The Whole Game since it softlocked itself. The golem who im supposed to bait wont chase me. Its a shame since I really like this game and am even replaying it. If you are going to make a game this broken at least let me load multiple savepoints back or at least add a restart stage button. Also the menus dont work properly using keyboard. And the controls menu only has controller buttons (not keyboard). Also dont put voicelines right before cutscene triggers because then the voicelines just cut off. edit 2: after replaying the first few levels, one of the golems is still frozen slamming the floor and wont chase me, hence there is no way to progress. The first time I played this game years ago it was borderline unplayable, but now its fully unplayable. edit 3: Seems none of the enemies in the game attack anymore, as well as a few other glitches that make it so I actually can't finish the game anymore
very unpolished experience a lot of things just don't have sounds, platforming feels odd, and lots of buggy behavior. too bad cause the concept is interesting, and the story seems okay its just mostly a meh meh title buy it if it goes up for a dollar or something, or if you hate yourself.
