The Walking Vegetables, developed by Still Running and published by MG Publishing and Tagstar Games, is an energetic twin-stick shooter that fully embraces its absurd and whimsical premise. In a world overrun by mutant, hostile vegetables, players take control of a lone hero tasked with battling through wave after wave of bizarre enemies. The game combines fast-paced action with roguelike elements, presenting procedurally generated levels, randomized power-ups, and a constantly evolving battlefield. Its over-the-top concept is supported by gameplay that is simple to pick up yet challenging to master, creating a mix of chaotic fun and strategic decision-making. Gameplay centers on twin-stick shooting mechanics, allowing players to move and fire independently in a fluid and responsive manner. Weapons and power-ups are scattered throughout each level, giving players opportunities to upgrade their arsenal and experiment with different strategies. The lack of a reloading mechanic ensures that the action flows continuously, keeping players engaged in near-constant combat. While the game’s mechanics are straightforward, the combination of roguelike randomness and enemy variety ensures that no two playthroughs feel exactly the same, maintaining a sense of unpredictability and excitement. Visually, The Walking Vegetables leans into a retro-inspired pixel art style, reminiscent of classic 1980s arcade shooters. Environments are colorful and diverse, ranging from city streets and industrial areas to hidden underground bunkers, all populated with destructible objects and secret areas. Enemy designs are intentionally ridiculous, with oversized broccoli, deadly carrots, and other mutated produce providing both challenge and comic relief. This playful design language reinforces the game’s humorous tone, making even the most intense battles entertaining and memorable. The audio design complements the visual style, featuring a synth-heavy soundtrack that evokes the energy of classic action films and arcade games. Sound effects are exaggerated and comical, from the squelching of mutant vegetables to the explosive impact of weapons, further enhancing the game’s chaotic charm. While the soundtrack and effects effectively capture the retro aesthetic, some players may find the music repetitive during longer play sessions, though it generally maintains the game’s energetic pace and atmosphere. Despite its strengths, The Walking Vegetables presents some challenges that may affect certain players’ enjoyment. The difficulty curve can be steep, with early levels already demanding quick reflexes and strategic thinking. The randomized nature of roguelike design can lead to uneven experiences, as players may encounter unfavorable combinations of enemies or power-ups that make progression particularly difficult. Additionally, the game’s humor and absurdity, while central to its identity, may not appeal to everyone, potentially limiting its audience to those with a taste for over-the-top comedy. Overall, The Walking Vegetables is a distinctive and entertaining addition to the twin-stick shooter genre. Its combination of fast-paced combat, procedural level design, and playful aesthetics creates a chaotic yet rewarding gameplay experience. While its challenging difficulty and sometimes unpredictable mechanics may frustrate some players, the game’s charm, humor, and nostalgic retro style make it a memorable and engaging title for those seeking a high-energy, comedic, and action-packed adventure. Super fun and cartoony twin stick shooter. The rogue-like components are fun and the environments and secrets within are fun to navigate and unearth.
In my honest opinion, I wish more people knew about this underrated gem. The game is great fun and plays similar to bullet hell without the bullets which to someone like me who is trash at bullet hell can appreciate the game easier and fun nature, not to say the game is not challenging though because it balances it perfectly. The game deserves much love and is worth a play
Very fun game.
