TL;DR: I can recommend this game, especially if you catch it on sale. There are many things I liked and only a few I didn't, so the overall balance is definitely positive. :) So, what did I like about The Universim? The Narrator! He has such a calming, deep voice that really relaxes me. It suits the role perfectly and he’s a genuinely well-written character. His comments are interesting, witty, and just pleasant to listen to. Speaking of humor, that’s the second thing I really enjoyed. To be honest, when I first started and the devs served up their first joke, I was a bit skeptical. I thought, "Oh no, is this going to be full of cringe?" Fortunately, it’s not. The humor & jokes fit the gameplay... and I smiled a few times :) I enjoy the art style, the graphics. It suits the game's vibe and looks good. It's not a masterpiece, it's not something that I would put on my wall as a poster, but just looks nice and fit together well. I was also surprised by how much content there is. New things kept popping up, which kept me hooked for a long time. After 15 hours, I reached the space age and was able to colonise other planets. At that point, I realised that there was still a lot more to discover and that there was still a big part of the game left to play, but I stopped.... Why did I stop? Now we go to things that I didn't enjoy. Many things are not explained clearly enough. You often have to make decisions based on intuition or experimentation. That would be cool, but the problem is that the game becomes very punishing in the later stages if you make the wrong choice early on. I know that’s part of the strategy/city-builder genre, but here it felt a bit off. But here goes another problem - you don't feel that something is wrong. You go stress free through one event to another, from one research to another, you expand a lot and problems suddenly start to pile up.... Other settlements attack, but my troops don't defend? I still don't know tbh... maybe a bug? Electricity usage can rapidly go to extremes and half of your city is not working. People starve, even though you built a lot of eateries. One moment I have too many Creator Points, the next I don't have enough to help anyone The percentage of believers is falling, which is natural when there is more education and development, but overall, I still don't know what to do to catch up. I healed them, performed miracles and other things... but it didn't help much. All these problems just came out of nowhere for me. I felt like I didn't truly understand why they were happening or how to fix them. So after 15 hours I lost motivation to continue the game, but I enjoyed the experience regardless of problems above. I can definetly say that I enjoyed playing this game, it was fun and time well spent. I just reached the point where I felt that it doesn't make sense anymore and it's time to jump to another game.
I wish there was a mixed option for reviews. I really like this game for the most part. This game scratches an itch for me that no other game I've found can scratch. It's like a mix of Sim City and Civilization while also being a God Sim. It's unique and it's fun to guide your followers through their various trials and tribulations however you deem fit. However, the game starts to fall apart a bit towards the space age. The AI logic starts breaking down and they'll stop building what you tell them to and just keep building residential buildings. They'll start drinking dirty lake water despite having full water reservoirs every 20 feet. The Energy Secretary meant to auto-handle energy needs for you did literally nothing the entire time for me. It was just a mess once I got into the modern age and beyond. It's a shame because I was having a really fun time with this game up until that point. I tried pushing past it to try and reach the end of the tech tree, but it was just brutal at that point trying to compensate for the buggy follower AI. In the state it's in, it's definitely not worth $30, but I'd pick it up on sale if this game seems like it might tickle your fancy.
hasn't updated since 2024. gameplay is repetitive and boring, with nothing much in the way of anything interesting - it's essentially the exact same gameplay loop over and over again, and a lot of the mechanics aren't very intuitive don't buy this, it's not even being updated and isn't fun
