The Takeover is a side-scrolling beat'em up inspired by 90's classics such as Streets of Rage and Final Fight. Battle solo or alongside a friend in local co-op while listening to awesome tunes from Little V Mills, Richie Branson, James Ronald and industry legend Yuzo Koshiro!

At current discounts, go for it. My reservation over the years seems founded, in that it's a pixel era game done with full graphics and those can often feel like using paper cutouts. This does have that feeling. But decent work has gone in to shifting the perspective in the maps from the strict 2D mode - but not in too fancy a way as to be obstructive. The visuals are garish, but nicely designed - doing the tall sprite cabinet game approach nicely, with all the usual stuff we know and expect from this genre. Addition of a gun is novel, not played enough to see this really come into its own. I'm sure as I play more I'll get more used to precisely where I am standing and where the enemy pickups are. At the moment it's like, ok that didn't pick up, try again lower down the screen. Also the finishers at the end of combos are gonna take some getting used to. Great when I pull them off, but too often I'm not quite sure if I'm at the end of a combo and end up going up or down the screen rather than those directions being used as part of my chosen finisher. I was playing on hard, but I don't think any of that is down to things which would be affected by that - which I expect is just how aggressive the enemies are and how much health they have... and perhaps how much there is around to pick up. The music is good, I also appreciate enemies with battle jackets and heroines in Latex catsuits. But if you're looking for a really fluid retro brawler, this isn't it. You'd be better going for a less fruity take than this. So far this seems to be for people like me who have played a ton of these over the years and appreciate the references and the new riffs on the old formula. Easily worth £3.99 and they have a sequel on the way
Great visuals and combat. Feels like every good old school beat em up rolled into one glorious package. Only downside is almost every boss has a spin attack that they just spam on you constantly. Other than that, love it.
