I absolutely loved the game which I found through a random tweet and decided to try on stream. Not everything is perfect as the gameplay is average and controls could be a bit more intuitive. However I absolutely loved the writing as so much of it feels right. The English translation is also pretty good. Some of the boss fight are also interestingly designed though I don’t won’t to spoil anything.
I didn't quite realize intially the scope of Internet Generation: it seemed to be an amiable game where you start as a newbie searching for lewd pics. I got worried that this might be just a ploy to get some NSFW content into it, but it turned out to be, among all the various battles and the few minigames, a very amiable game containing a very modern-relatable story. As always, be mindful that after the initial paragraphs there might be spoilers contained in this review. You start as a newbie in a server which is full of people flaming, the very first landscape you encounter is one of explosions and a distinct character making its best to prevent the messages and clashes from continuing. The newbie itself joins a random server, which is something many people do, both in reality and in the fictional world of the game itself: be it boredom, need to socialize, wanting to discover new things, or established interests, we often end up into an environment that is beyond the usual ones we stay in, to meet new faces, discuss new things, seek for content we like, or even just have a peek. The newbie very happily wants to enjoy lewd pics, but the one character allowing them to do so gets bashed pretty quickly. Thus starts the quest to [strike] attempt all you can to retrieve those lewd pics [/strike] understand what has been happening in the server, getting to know the characters of interest that inhabit it, and among all the newcomers merging together without any diversity, meeting those which have feelings and situations that we all face at least once in our life. We got someone that doesn't want the server to die, thus they try to recruit new members constantly. We learn that the server was much much different in the past, and has been taken over my moderators that abuse their powers. We get to see glimpses of new characters 'rising to power' and getting the support of the community, and those that have changed because their life has become difficult to manage. All of this is hidden in very brief sequences of dialogues followed by combat sessions with various different enemies and bonuses to use as boosts to power or as particular effect. Mind you, I generally focus on the story, so for me the gameplay was a bit chaotic yet simple at the same time: you can either try to use all the various techniques you learn during the game elegantly, or.... do what I do and find the correct order of button mashing that allows you to survive and kill longer. Thematics like excessive work in real life, along lack of free time, personal attrition, fear of not being accepted, vtubing (mentioned) and idol/simp relationship, all make a brief apparition in one way or another, and if you're like me, having experienced the rise and downfall of forums, group chats and discord servers because of several reasons, you might find also a bit of relatable content into the qualms and desires of the characters. Although not all content was something I agreed with (damn you, inevitable-plot death and bullying of characters on the internet without any consideration), Internet Generation was a very amiable and heartwarming game in its own little special uniqueness, with its many different subtle choices and quirks to portray the varied world of the internet, including 2-3 minigames and special sequences, that can either make you appreciate the care and decisions put into the work, or otherwise show that this is not something for you; if you enjoy gameplay but a scuffed one, and don't mind paying the price knowing you will focus a lot on essentially doing similar fights for the majority of the game, then I can only recommend the game: it portrays well how growing and changeable yet unsteady the world of the Internet is, and how there will always be content and friendships to be made thanks to all the people that inhabit it, representing the true Internet Generation.
The personification of joining a public Discord server.
Beat em up with a really interesting premise, good writing, cute art style and some great music. The gameplay has a tendency to drag on a little and there are some snags with some stages
the minesweeper boss
but the writing keeps you engaged throughout, overall a really good game. heavily recommend, and I hope to see more from the devs
While the gameplay is a generic beat-em up style and the 'plot' revolves around finding lewd pics, the story is captivating enough and relatable to a lot of people. Making servers with your online friends and filling them with memories has to be a core memory. No matter how much inactivity the server gets it still holds irreplaceable moments you shared with others. Treasure your online friends. We are the Internet Generation.
